to think that if you need to have a lie down on a flight you're a lazy fecker?

FFS, a flight is only at max 12ish hours long.

Surely anyone could stay awake for that length of time?

What a great opportunity to catch up on reading, correspondence, or you certainly could be sociable and actually communicate with your fellow passengers.

Do something edifying, you sloths.

And sure Business Class has all those perks so that Very Important People can actually do business, not snore, snort, snuffle and snooze?

If all these large thrones chairs were removed I reckon the airlines could fit on loads more normal seats, thus extra passengers and some planet-saving could be achieved.

Hmm

I only fly business long haul. Never economy. shudder

And always have a fab meal in the lounges beforehand, then queue jump, then a nice lie down in business.

The perks of a DH who flies all the time alot.

gooseberrybushes · 09/03/2011 09:09

This is turning into a show off thread.

Shirleywhirly · 09/03/2011 09:16

At least it's blatant.

It's stealth boasting I can't bear.

JessRabbit · 09/03/2011 09:35

It would be boasting if someone came onto the thread and suggested you were all being unreasonable by flying commercial and you should really try NetJets if you don't have your own plane. :o

ScroobiousPip · 09/03/2011 09:35

Amazed you were allowed to sleep on the floor Expat - every long haul flight I've been on, I've seen the air stewards strictly enforce a no sitting/lying on the floor rule.

Now I know the issue of reclining seats is a whole other thread (and one that's been done before) but I disagree with Pagwatch - if the chair reclines, it's entirely up to the passenger in that seat when and if they choose to recline it. If you don't like it, travel business class or on one of the airlines that have more legroom.

NorbertDentressangle · 09/03/2011 09:55

I'm very jealous Envy

Not of those of you who can afford to fly first class/business class/private jet etc but of those of you who can sleep on journeys.

Even with a bed-sized reclining seat, duvet, pillows and a hefty amount of alcohol I'd still be wide awake all bloody night.

1234ThumbWar · 09/03/2011 10:00

My dh flys internationally a lot and the majority of the time he gets off the plane and goes straight into a meeting when is he supposed to sleep? He often travels across several time zones, visiting several countries before getting home, if he's required to do this then the least he can expect is to do it in comfort.

gooseberrybushes · 09/03/2011 10:00

Oh yes Shirley Grin

"God I hate it when I have to go to all these cocktail parties as the wife of the head of fabulousamountsofmoney.inc. It's so dull. I'd much rather be changing nappies." Oh shut up.

Bloody love business class. Better food, lovely lounge pre flight, massage, big fold out bed, squishy duvet, sleep. What's not to love?!

And adore a free upgrade to 1st even more! Thanks Ethiad and Virgin!

OTheHugeDaffodils · 09/03/2011 10:21

YABU. My DP sometimes has to take a 13-hour flight to the Far East, then go into meetings straight off the plane, followed by several days of meetings 7am-midnight, then straight back on the plane to the UK again, get off the plane and straight into the office for more meetings.

If he couldn't sleep on the plane he'd be a wreck.

expatinscotland · 09/03/2011 12:42

'Amazed you were allowed to sleep on the floor Expat - every long haul flight I've been on, I've seen the air stewards strictly enforce a no sitting/lying on the floor rule.'

Be amazed then. I just did it last on a KLM flight last year. Hmm

jasminetom · 09/03/2011 14:18

I refuse to fly Economy, my choice my money. I don't give a fuck about the environment and don't need judgy old you to do it for me.
I am not lazy and, more importantly, do not THINK I AM SUCH A VIP that I can tell other people what to do.
In short, not unreasonable, just twitchy, pathetic and probably jealous.

Pagwatch · 09/03/2011 14:31

I did a fucking marvellous bit of unintentional boasting earlier this week.

I was in Thomas cook and was giving brief details to woman who was checking out holidays for us for next year..
Ok, she said ... And what about flights? You can fly ba or virgin.

Virgin please. And premium economy. My son will only fly virgin premium economy.

I said goodbye and left noting glances from other customers.

Then I realised that they don't know that it is because of his asd/OCD and that he literally can't cope with different flights to USA etc.... Virgin or stay at home situation.

manfromCUK · 09/03/2011 14:36

OP - YABU, however if your view is commonly shared, no doubt there will be fixed seats on some long haul airlines at some point. Imagine having to sit in a smaller than usual uncomfortable chair for 12 hours - not a chance I wouldn't want to go to the kitchen and make a coffee etc. Can't do that in plane so prefer sleep to pass the boring hours.

JustaNickname · 09/03/2011 21:15

I automatically get tired as soon as the plane takes off. I'm taking my first trip to the states in May and the flights is something like 10 hours. Although I know I'll be able to watch films and stuff and its kind of a family reunion thing so there will actually be 40 of my nearest and dearest on the plane I'll probably still sleep at some stage :D

PepsiPopcorn · 10/03/2011 00:34

Am I right in thinking the oxygen levels on a plane are lower than in real fresh air, which makes people sleepy?

OP, why do you care? It's no skin off your nose if people sleep or not. So butt out and mind your own business.

ScroobiousPip · 10/03/2011 07:24

Why the Hmm? I wasn't saying that I didn't believe you, Expat - just that you were lucky. Most airlines are really strict about not sitting/lying on the floor. No idea why - it seems a daft rule.
