To think wearing shoes indoors is disgusting?

I have a 'No shoes worn in the home' rule at my own house but I have noticed that a lot of people are not fussed if peps walk into their houses with their shoes on. Why do they allow this?

Last night when I arrived at my mum's, she ordered me not to enter the living room, as she had accidentially trod dog poo through the room and was busy scrubbing the floor. All because she bizzrely wears her shoes in her home. How hard is it to take your shoes off in the hallway, once you get home?

I tried to hide my annoyance as it is her home, but I wouldn't allow DD to crawl about on the floor. The room stunk of poo and i felt sick.

I totally agree with wordfactory. Some people will mind. But they will be polite. So you may think of yourself as a welcoming host, but your family and friends may not.

tbh I never feel relaxed in a house where people are as bothered about their carpets and clean floors as some of the posters on here. Its not just about shoes, but I feel nervous about eating and drinking in case I spill a drink or drop crumbs on the floor.

And I also wonder about posters who say they wouldn't make someone take off their shoes if they are disabled, etc. How do you know?

My OH has a genetic illness and has hospital made inserts in shoes to lessen pain. But OH doesn't look disabled and shoes look normal. And friends have asked OH to take shoes off not realising this will increase pain.

Friends do know about illness and shoe inserts, but ime with chronic invisible illness, people rarely think things through and you need to spell things out to them.OH HATES a fuss so will always comply.

I don't have my shoes on at home. Shoes are outdoor things. I don't ask people to remove theirs though, but appreciate it when they do. It's not so much about the grime for me, but about the comfort. Feels wrong to be indoors and in shoes.

I take a thick pair of socks if visiting so I can take off my shoes and have warm feet still. I keep them on if it's a big house party or something though.

diddl · 09/03/2011 09:37

"However, when you insist guests take off their shoes"

But why would you/anyone insist?

Isn´t it just good manners to take outdoor things off when going indoors?

Or do people who keep shoes on also keep coats on?

wordfactory · 09/03/2011 09:38

Quite.
My mother is simply an old lady with arthritis. How would you know that?

I also know a woman who is morbidly obese. She would I am sure struggle to remove her shoes.

I think it would be breathtakingly inhumane to embarrass her any more than her size already does so.

Why would anyone want to make people feel uncomfortable? What's in it for you? Clean carpets?

Come on.

diddl · 09/03/2011 09:39

"It's not so much about the grime for me, but about the comfort. Feels wrong to be indoors and in shoes."

Yes, same here.

wordfactory · 09/03/2011 09:41

But surely you could whip up enough empathy to understand others may feel differently?

wordfactory · 09/03/2011 09:43

Don't get me wrong if you came to my house and wanted to remove your shoes, then I would certainly be happy for you to do that.

I could get slippers (DH travels a lot so we have thousands of comp slippers and bathrobe) for you if need be.

But I wouldn't care what you chose. You're the guest.

That's how it works.

lesley33 · 09/03/2011 09:45

I feel most comfortable wearing shoes indoors. I never come in and take off shoes unless I have been wearing uncomfortable party shoes.

But like wordfactory I would be happy for you to take your shoes off and some people do. But I wouldn't demand it.

NinkyNonker · 09/03/2011 09:46

I would certainly be a bit Hmm if someone insisted I remove my shoes.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 09/03/2011 10:01

Well I have to insist people remove their shoes. Then I have them walk through a disinfectant tray to clean their feet. Then I make them take extra wide steps when walking around my house and only walk up the very edge of the stairs. You can never be too careful.

onepieceoflollipop · 09/03/2011 10:03

Don't let them upstairs Ferret - are you completely mad? If they need the loo then let them go in the garden. Obviously it won't matter a jot if they tread in it because their shoes are coming off anyway. Wink

Ormirian · 09/03/2011 10:04

inet - do you make your guests take their clothes off too in case they have been on public transport?

wordfactory · 09/03/2011 10:16

CSI suits handed at the door - it's the future I tell you.

Well it all seems a bit OTT to me!

No wonder cleaning product makers are coining it with their anti bac this, that and the other. They must have seen you lot coming!

Btw, without germs we would all be dead!

BadBagel · 09/03/2011 10:57

I hope that those of you who insist on guests taking off their shoes mention this when inviting them.

And I assume you all must have big hallways :)

Dylan44 · 09/03/2011 11:03

I think your guest shoes is the least of your worries. What about the bacteria on their clothes and their bodies? Most of the particulate matter in your home will be skin and bacteria. You need to install a negative pressure filtration system on your house with airlocks on all doorways. In the airlocks your guests must change into dustfree paper suits with hoods and dust masks, after applying grease to exposed skin to reduce skin particles. It is the only way!

Bogeyface · 09/03/2011 11:05

What do you do if they fart?

Dylan44 · 09/03/2011 11:08

That is the nightmare of any clean room worker! The filtration system should sort it out though :)

TryingVeryHard · 09/03/2011 11:10

"No wonder cleaning product makers are coining it with their anti bac this, that and the other."

Taking shoes off in the house doesn´t mean that you´ve been sucked into buying all that stuff, though.

Here, everyone does it.

No one insists.

TryingVeryHard · 09/03/2011 11:13

OP, I don't quite get it, why did you even ask "AIBU" if you're not bothered by the YABU replies?...
I was going to start writing how I go about this shoes on malarkey and then thought what's the point, I'll just lurk some more and read the funny bits!
