Do people actually buy them? Is anyone that lazy or useless in the kitchen that they can't make proper pancakes?

I would consider myself to be an excellent cook. I cook most things from scratch - make my own bread about three times a week, make cakes/biscuits/I even have a pasta machine and have been known to make my own pasta.

But pancakes I am absolutely crap at. I think it has to do with not being able to see the bubbles on the surface so not being able to turn them on time - or something. I can do the american-style ones no problem but the thin ones...

Unfortunately our local shop had run out of ready-made ones so I will have to attempt them

But I am not a lazy cook by any stretch...

Now pre-cut carrots/potatoes/other veg on the other hand...

You can get ready mix in a plastic bottle that you just shake and pour or you can use eggs from your very own hens gathered in your cath kidston apron pocket this morning and mixed with a kitchen aid then fried and tossed in a genuine le Dreiser pan!

nothing wrong with any of it, it falls into the same catagory as ready grated cheese and peeled and chopped carrots.
They serve a purpose
That said I am subjecting the kids to my homemade lumpy ones any minute now!!

I didn't mean to be cheeky, just honestly curious.

I don't flip pancakes in the fancy style, I use one of my kitchen tools. No idea about the bubble thing but once I see it's starting to get hard (you can see on the side) I carefully lift a tiny piece and check. If it's not brown enough I wait with turning it around.

And unless you don't mix it properly (i.e. let the kids do it completely Wink ) the mixture should be ok without any flour bits etc.

So yeah, mix the three things, pour some into the pan and flip when it's getting brown.

The pan does have to be good though. I am always using two at the same time and while one of them is really good the other one makes them burn quite easily/sticks a bit. So I think that's definitely a huge factor

my pan is shite, it doesn't even have a handle
I don't use a frying pan at all, so I never bothered to replace
I think packet ones to microwave sound ideal

mrsscoob · 08/03/2011 17:45

I have a shite frying pan, I let my 4 year old make the batter and they still came out yummy, I genuinely can't understand why people can't make pancakes!

I hear some lazy fuckers don't bake their own bread either.

Haven't read whole thread.

Pancakes made easy.

Dump all ingredients (I normally do a bastardised version of Delia) into blender. Double quanities if there are lots of you.

4 oz plain flour
2 lge eggs
7 fl oz milk
3 fl oz water ( or 10floz of skimmed milk)

Whizz until smooth.

Leave to stand.

Heat pan with butter

Cook pancakes. Wait until top is dry before attempting to loosen edges and flip.

Repeat ad infinitum.

If there are lots of you two pans is the route to happiness (made pancakes for 10 while away skiing - had 3 pans on the go).

Teach your kids to do it so you can sit down while they cook them.
