to wonder why they sell ready-made pancakes?

Do people actually buy them? Is anyone that lazy or useless in the kitchen that they can't make proper pancakes?

And my grandmother sevendwarves? Might it make sense for her and others like her to have access to easy things so that she can hang onto her own home for a bit longer?

ShavingGodfreysPrivates · 07/03/2011 16:59

I buy them for the boys so they can have an easy to microwave snack if they are peckish and I'm not around.

I make the 'real deal' ones every now and then but wouldn't trust the boys not to set the house on fire or redecorate the ceiling if I'm not there.

So YABU as far as my culinary-challenged DS's are concerned.

Tesco do some nice, thin crepes that are far nicer than the more solid ones btw.

Darnsarfupnorf · 07/03/2011 17:00

x-posting

i bought them this year because i dont have a cooker at the mo so cant make the proper ones...im perfectly capable of it but id be wonder woman to do it without a hob and frying pan Grin

ZZZenAgain · 07/03/2011 17:03

is it the fancy flipping that puts people off? I don't do any of that fancy stuff and I am really a crap cook I admit it but pancakes usually work out alright if the pan is in good nick and I don't make them too thin

must go and get some new pans.... sigh...can't be bothered

StormInaCCup · 07/03/2011 17:05

I made my own pancakes for the first time when I got Jamie Oliver's Minstry of Food cookbook last year. I am normally a pretty good cook so no idea why i'd never attempted pancakes before but it was a surprise at how easy and quick they are to do. We have them most weekends now for a breakfast treat with chopped banana and maple syrup Grin

His recipe is literally foolproof as long as you use the same cup for measuring the milk and flour:

One egg,
One cup of flour,
One cup of milk
Pinch of salt

Whisk together to make your batter.

Cook in a hot flat frying pan with a knob of butter. Use plain flour if you want 'traditional' thin crepe type pancakes, self raising if you want thicker 'american style' pancakes. Delish!

sevendwarves · 07/03/2011 18:00

ShowofHands I'll let your grandmother off as an exception, if it enables her to remain independent. tbh she's fortunate at 85 to be able to afford ready-grated cheese, I know my MIL couldn't on her state pension ( but that's another discussion entirely)

I saw these in the supermarket today and just knew someone would start this thread Grin how predictable MN can be..

The traditional marking of the seasons, TerrorGrin

Hey, why isn't there a [pan] emoticon for today - a nice little seasonal frying pan, with possible alternative use for head-bashing?

tyler80 · 07/03/2011 18:11

I've had them at work before on pancake day, I wouldn't bother again.

Homemade pancakes freeze pretty well so it's easy enough to make a batch all at once and then get them out the freezer as needed if i want the convenience factor.

Like others have said, you do need a good pan. We had been limited to American style pancakes for a while as our pan was too rubbish for crepes, got a lovely new pan now.

coolascucumber · 07/03/2011 18:14

They are great for camping, just warm through in the pan and serve with lemon juice and sugar.

iscream · 07/03/2011 18:18

For the same reason they sell a lot of ready made foods.
I bought frozen waffles for years. My son's would make them for snacks. Fast, safe and easy.

Calling people lazy and useless isn't very kind.

AboardtheAxiom · 07/03/2011 18:18

Ooh never thought of them as possible camping food, DS would be over the moon to have these whilst camping (he gets toast withdrawal symptoms and I reckon pancakes might ease the pain)!

ShavingGodfreysPrivates · 07/03/2011 18:28

AboardtheAxiom

You can buy a camping toaster here for just £3

52Girls · 07/03/2011 18:35

I make 'em ..and I buy 'em.

I really couldn't give a flying if the OP, or anyone, thinks that's "Lazy or useless".

How pathetic.

Praline · 07/03/2011 18:36

WHat a ridiculous post. Am I lazy & useless coz I buy bread too? Or dont milk my own cow?

ZZZenAgain · 07/03/2011 19:02

yahoo I got myself some new pans

Last batch were really expensive and didn't last. Sniff.

Do you know it never occured to me to freeze home-made pancakes? Mind you they don't last around here..

tyler80 · 07/03/2011 19:04

ZZZenAgain You have to make the ones for freezing having consumed 10 a few pancakes first so you're not at all tempted by them Grin

ZZZenAgain · 07/03/2011 19:05

ah ok. I am just too lazy and useless to manage that after 10 pancakes. lol

will keep it mind though, it is a good idea

shushpenfold · 07/03/2011 19:10

WE may well be buying pancakes - my dh is the only one in the house who can make them, I'm totally useless (although can whip up an Xmas meal for 15 with no problem...go figure!) Mainly though, it's because I'm lazy and slack (to coin a phrase from Thomas the Tank) due to having a terrible work life balance...too much of the former and a crap latter as a result. I'd rather the kids had fun on pancake day rather than having me behave like a harpie and ruining the whole thing.

Badgerwife · 08/03/2011 12:55

Orange flower water is one of those fancy things you buy in the baking section (like rose water). You only add a tablespoon to batter and it gives a slight taste or orange basically, which works brilliantly for sweet pancakes. It keeps forever and is easier than faffing about putting lemon or orange zest in, which I never have in the house when I fancy pancakes. It would never have occured to me if I hadn't seen my mum use it though.

ZZZenAgain · 08/03/2011 13:11

oh thank you badger. I'll ahve a look out for that. Have never seen it.

jeee · 08/03/2011 13:16

My DD begged me, with tears in her eyes, NOT to make pancakes. 'Please Mum, just buy them.'

Despite her pleas, I'm going to make the DC suffer and make pancakes from scratch this year.

LittleJennyRobyn · 08/03/2011 13:19

Haven't read the whold thread but...have you seen and tasted my Pancakes???

I seriously wouldn't advise it!! Grin

Dh does brilliant pancakes but has been at work the last two pancake day's so i have to make do with ready made.

20 seconds in the microwave and they are done!!

Taste Fine

Sorted!!

Also great for pancake day races as they are not sticky like homemade pancakes, Bought some for DC's pancake race at school a couple of years ago.

mrsscoob · 08/03/2011 13:19

YANBU Pancake Day is only one day a year, people should make an effort to make them properly or just not bother at all. They take about two seconds to make, I also use the one cup method and it never fails.
