to wonder why they sell ready-made pancakes?

Do people actually buy them? Is anyone that lazy or useless in the kitchen that they can't make proper pancakes?

It's the just add water, shake in a bottle stuff that cracks me up.

On Sunday I spent oh about 3 minutes making pancake batter, (flour, milk, egg, pinch of salt, whisk), returned to the sofa to see this shake in a bottle stuff advertised on TV. Seriously it takes 3 minutes to make pancake batter - what's the big deal?

I can see why people would buy pre-made ones for lunchboxes etc though if they were that was inclined.

Pinkjenny · 08/03/2011 13:25

I bought some ready made pancake batter this morning from M&S on my way to work. The children will want pancakes after nursery but the ready made batter limits the carnage after a long day for all of us.

Do I qualify as lazy and useless?

mrsscoob · 08/03/2011 13:26

I agree finding.... I think ready made pancakes definitely have their place. Just not on pancake day!

LittleJennyRobyn · 08/03/2011 13:29

So mrsscoob

You are saying that because my pancakes are seriously naff, My DC's should go without??

Don't be so bloody daft Woman...i can make the pancakes but they wont get eaten...whats the point if they just end up in the bin??

No i think its better all round to buy them.
I'm happy, Kids happy, No waste, Really not a problem is there?

RoundOrangeHead · 08/03/2011 13:33

first time I saw ready made pancakes was in a french supermarket about 15 years ago

it's probably their idea

5ofus · 08/03/2011 13:37

Jamie Oliver did a programme - forget which one - where he added icing sugar and grated pear. Tried it with apple and it's a winner in our house. Really good.

I can't understand why so many people only have pancakes once a year! Whole family loves pancakes so we have them a couple of times a month. Would be more often if I wasn't trying desparately to stick to SW!

mrsscoob · 08/03/2011 13:40

LittleJenny, it is really easy to make pancakes, I am a crap cook and I can make them. Just use one cup milk, one cup flour and an egg.... honestly it is really easy! Thats the whole fun of pancake day making them yourselves and getting the kids to help, even if they are rubbish at least you've tried and you could always keep a few ready made ones as a back up :)

Iklboo · 08/03/2011 13:42

Last year our hob was broken. Would have been a bit of a bugger trying to do pancakes for DS's tea without ready made ones.

wannabesybil · 08/03/2011 13:47

I can make pancakes.

I don't make pancakes because my four year old, my husband and even evil cat will all hang around getting under foot and then being chocolate fireguard use when the smoke alarm goes off (always) and I end up leaving a smoking hot pan to belt upstairs to turn it off. They will get in the way. They will not be safe near the hot pan. I heart ready made pancakes.

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/03/2011 13:50

I am lazy but not useless- I like the ready made ones -don't be such a smug arse

LittleJennyRobyn · 08/03/2011 13:55

But thats my Point mrsscoob.

They are really bad!! so i dont see the point in wasting time standing over the frying pan only to chuck them in the bin.

DC's still wait in anticipation for the microwaved ones to heat thier toppings at ready to put on, take the pancake and move to the back of the queue.

It's like a production line...we do this until someone either feels sick or pancakes are all gone. Smile

wannabesybil · 08/03/2011 13:57

Seven dwarves - Asda smartprice medium cheddar, grated, £3.74 per kilo. There isn't any smartprice medium cheddar but the cheapest is £5.97 per kilo (at time of typing, but the wind could change).

Supermarkets don't always make sense. I would always grate my own for freshness.

sevendwarves · 08/03/2011 14:30

Easy pancake recipe here

wannabe my local shop sells a small packet for about the same price as a small block of cheese!

Giselle99 · 08/03/2011 14:39

I understand the OP's post. I love making pancakes and tend to make some every week - if I'm asked to take just one food item to a desert island I'll take one of those pancake mixes that instruct you to add water and shake (though in reality you'd need some more sugar, and I like nutmeg in my mix). However I know not everyone is inclined to buy and mix together eggs, flour, milk etc in the same way that not everyone is inclined to purchase a raw chicken and prepare a roast etc... but it's not something I'd do (i.e. buy ready made pancakes, not ready made chicken!)

The other reason I'd never buy ready made pancakes is because they never taste as good as the ones I make. Also the cost - comparatively homemade pancakes don't cost anything.

BuzzLiteBeer · 08/03/2011 14:41

I dunno. Are people so lacking in both social skills and things to occupy their simple minds that they will post a thread like this one?

IcingOnTheCakes · 08/03/2011 15:00

yanbu to wonder but yabu for assuming people buy them out of laziness or because they are useless.

They taste gross, they don't compare to real pancakes made properly but they are handy. For instance, they had them at a play session i take dcs to because they can't make them in the kitchen for what ever reason and the kids had fun putting fillings on them.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2011 15:31

we had them this morning through necessity. They were a bit revolting!

notimetotidy · 08/03/2011 16:45

You can't pour pancake mixture into a toaster! It really does make a mess - ready made every time! Grin

wannabesybil · 08/03/2011 16:47

seven dwarves - I know, it's crazy. Bought grated cheese should be dearer than block cheese, and ime it goes mouldy quicker, but it isn't always. Supermarkets are seriously odd sometimes, and you need to watch the price per kilo like a hawk!

My local shop only sells block cheese. A few years ago I could only get groceries either delivered or a bus ride away, but now at least we can buy white bread, fizzy pop and pancake mix (aka flour).

mrsoliverramsay · 08/03/2011 16:51

I set my smoke alarm off cooking my pancakes today and had to bin them.

This is why you get ready made pancakes

wannabesybil · 08/03/2011 16:53

Mrs Oliverramsey - that's we we don't have home made pancakes, french toast or anything seriously fried (regardless of health).

It's not just the noise and the neighbours laughing, it's belting up the steep steps, tripping over evil cat etc to turn the dratted alarm off.

I wonder if you can do pancakes in the microwave - I am sure that there must be a way.

"What's wrong with buying the ready made ones?"

There's nothing wrong with buying the ready made ones

"They taste just as nice as the real ones"

but you need to find someone to make you some decent pancakes if you believe this to be true

GilmoreGeek · 08/03/2011 17:25

See, I don't really care how people make their pancakes and definitely think ready made stuff has it's place (couldn't be bothered in the morning, camping etc).

I am just surprised at the huge amount of adults on here saying they CAN'T make pancakes. One egg and one cup of milk and one of flour. Where exactly can you go wrong? If you can't be bothered fair enough (I can be a lazy cow) but I don't understand people saying they cant make them

ninah · 08/03/2011 17:29

where can you go wrong ..
ours looked like sludge last year. Lumpy gruel that stuck to the pan.
Tried the ready mix this year, left dc to mix it, the first half dribbled into the pan followed by half a pound of pure flour.
If I'd known you could buy ready made I definitely would have done. I hate baking and frying.
