withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:21

i thought odd

ambarth · 06/03/2011 14:22

No, but my dd went to a party and they gave a different cake in the party bag. I thought it a bit mean tbh.

AlfalfaMum · 06/03/2011 14:23

Never done that. It's very odd Hmm
yanbu

withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:23

ah! so its common then

OP posts:
CharlotteBronteSaurus · 06/03/2011 14:25

sort of, yes
we do have a home made one for birthday tea at home
and send a sainsbo's one into preschool
mainly because i am rubbish at icing and at 4 they want to show their mates something that looks fun rather than tastes good.

withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:26

oh thats NOT good
and a cake at school = double shit

ALMOST as bad as kid who go on holiday in term time then bring sweets back in

sly gits

Have done this when there has been a 'friends' party and a 'family' party later and the birthday child wanted everyone to see the special (not 'posh' but maybe carefully themed or elaborate) cake.

Not unreasonable when, IME, the piece of cake in napkin invariably gets squashed on the way home then thrown away.

sourdoughface · 06/03/2011 14:27

the day i worried about something like this would be the day i packed it all in :)

withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:27

so you dont CARE about the friends and what they eat then?>

OP posts:
withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:28

..or its just all about showing off?

OP posts:
Merrylegs · 06/03/2011 14:28

I have seen this done also and think it is absolutely pointless and not v classy. I never put cake in a party bag (actually not a big fan of party bags). It's for cutting and eating at the party as part of the tea. Otherwise it just ends up getting all squashed and gooey.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 06/03/2011 14:28

ah, but tea at home is faaaaamily only.i am not doing a birthday party for preschoolers

and no 4 year old wants to eat my delicious but fugly rustic carrot cake when a shop bough Peppa Pig jobby could be had instead

ChippyMinton · 06/03/2011 14:30

It wouldn't be a horrible cake, just not the decorated one. Actually the decorated ones are usually a dull madeira inside, so the traybake or whatever is probably tastier.

withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:30

but thats utterly rude
its like having kids around giving them shit and saying " oh well save the best for us"

what terribly working class manners you all have

OP posts:
CharlotteBronteSaurus · 06/03/2011 14:30

i have just realised YOU must be eating the cake from the party bags .
only adults value the taste of the cake over the luminescence of the icing.

HeavenForfend · 06/03/2011 14:31

No. The nice fancy cake is the one that goes in the party bags chez HF.

BUT it's a pita because you spend the last 10 minutes of the party after the candles etc. frantically slicing and wrapping.

withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:31

i would never give guests to my home inferior food

OP posts:
withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:32

several years I made them eat the cake there.
was much easier
Specially the year it was a BIG mound of ice cream with chocolate fingers in it.

OP posts:
ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 06/03/2011 14:33

I'm now waiting for goat to inform me what 'working class' manners are ? Hmm

withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:34

shoving.
not shaking hands.
using your sleeve to wipe your nose.

shouting

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 06/03/2011 14:35

"what terribly working class manners you all have"

yup. what with me being working class and all.

hidenseek · 06/03/2011 14:35

Someone I know is about to do this. Cheap traybake for the kids at the party and expensive cake to take home again. But she will show the expensive cake for the candles and singing bit, so the kids all think they're getting that.

I think it's very trashy.

bemybebe · 06/03/2011 14:35

"working class manners"??? Hmm

StealthPolarBear · 06/03/2011 14:35

can see the logic of it if you want to get the party bags prepared before
I tend to do cake at the party and cake in the bag (I think...)
