One year I put nice home made fairy cakes in the party bags.

But I had handed out the posh birthday cake at the party and it was all eaten.

Did I do wrong?

"OK any ideas how to do a Buzz Lightyear with lots of bright green?"
yes. my friend J. Sainsbury will be able to assist.

bemybebe · 06/03/2011 14:46

"I would however be embarrassed if they made any kind of statement about the quality of the cake to the host - that to me would be extremely bad mannered."

Absolutely agree Squirrels

StealthPolarBear · 06/03/2011 14:46

I have spoken to him but he demanded £9 to help!
Mind you once I have done 2 test cakes and thrown away one disaster I'm sure it would be cheaper

withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:46

a simple wooden toy does the trick

LOL, you fiend. you had me good and proper until "wooden toy".

mnistooaddictive · 06/03/2011 14:47

I have seen different cakes in party bags. Some quality but individual fairy cakesbin bags do they didn't gave a mad rich to get 40 slices of cake in party bags. I have no issue with this. Btw I am in late 30s and always had a party bag with cake in as a child. This is not new!

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 06/03/2011 14:47

I'd consider myself to be 'working class' and manage to go out in public without shoving, grabbing, wiping my snout on my sleeve, talking loudly ('braying'if ya posh) and using a trough in place of a plate

I've always thought 'working class' is a stupid term tbh, surely we should all aspire to be 'working' class ??

withagoat · 06/03/2011 14:48

gosh no.

Mad rush obviously!

MillsAndDoom · 06/03/2011 14:52

Maybe there isn't enough nice cake to go round all the attendees so party host has to have a spare crappy shop bought working class cake to fill half the party bags cos kids don't care.

obviously she's now caught out cos some greedy parent has been scoffing the cake instead of hoovering it up off the bottom of the car as happens in our house

BuzzLiteBeer · 06/03/2011 14:52

I made the cakes for the last birthday party. so everyone got vile cake!

Praline · 06/03/2011 14:55

I generally leave that kind of thing up to the caterers natch, I would be horrified if someone gave us cheap cake! I would not be inviting them back to one of our parties for certain.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 06/03/2011 14:55

Those white chocolate tray bakes are bluudy lovely.

BOOTHS do fab cakes, I pity those who have no BOOTHS

iscream · 06/03/2011 14:56

I have never even put birthday cake in the bags. Usually, not always, but almost always, the parties have been in our home, and we serve one cake to all, made by myself.

MisSalLaneous · 06/03/2011 14:58

Party bags are stupid, but once everyone does it, it's difficult not to.

Well, I guess, as I still refuse to have ds a birthday party -had a picnic with theatre trip when 2 and a "monster party" in tent with 2 friends this year. He's only 3 ffs and I'm lazy, but we've been to quite a few already. Hmm For what it's worth, I'm not stingy and always give really nice gifts, but the idea of hosting a party for 20 odd toddlers is my idea of hell.

Anyway, my rambling above aside - my favourite party amongst his friends was the one with a dinosaur theme, each child got little dinosaur to take home, and cake was had there. No party bags. Brilliant.

Missymorrison87 · 06/03/2011 15:29

Hmm. Are you the same Troll who was whinging on about shopping on Sundays? Saying as we take our kids shopping on a Sunday we OBVIOUSLY spend no family time with them ever??

haha!

littlebylittle · 06/03/2011 15:30

I don't know what goes on, I leave all that to the staff!!! Seriously, I like baking so I make fancy one to blow out candles and plain round or square cake on same colour to cut up for party bags to avoid the mad rush at the point where all the children are tired. I really don't mind what cake people give us. Pleased to be invited to party. Dd is always told, you've had enough sweet stuff at the party, save the cake til tomorrow. By then it's stale and forgotten.

SeriousWispaHabit · 06/03/2011 15:34

Make a cake for the party. Ice garishly in chosen theme of child.

Batch of cupcakes (from same sponge and icing) for party bags.

Saves on frantic slicing and wrapping.
