to be annoyed that nobody will come near my children with chicken pox

Feel free to tell me I am.

DDs have chicken pox. Have had them since Thursday.

We are restricted to the house. Friends whose children have had chicken pox have called in to keep us entertained and been lovely and helpful BUT my family is useless!

MIL won't come because she is worried she will get shingles. She is a perfectly healthy 65 year old.

My sister won't come because her husband is diabetic. Now I'm prepared to accept that he might have to be careful for some reason but surely she doesn't. They've both had chicken pox.

If they don't want to help, I'm fine with that but enough with the 'I'd love to help but better not'

Angry

Are they really at risk?

Confused Everyone is saying You can't get Shigles from CP, but surely the point is you can get CP from CP ?

Am I missing something ?

Doctor: I'm afraid you're dying from disease X

Patient: Brilliant so long as it's not disease Y, I was worried for a moment there

HappySeven · 06/03/2011 21:09

It's not always nice to be special, dawntigga, but you can consider yourself so.

The point, cumfy, was that the MIL was scared she'd catch shingles.

suzikettles · 06/03/2011 21:11

Yes, you're missing that the OP's mother won't come to visit because she's worried that she'll catch shingles from the dc's chickenpox.

Those of us on this thread of course know that she is mistaken in this belief Grin

Jammyrella · 06/03/2011 21:35

So am I very special because I had CP twice, mumps twice, german measles twice, and caught measles even though I had been vaccinated (although I did get it mildly)?

HappySeven · 06/03/2011 21:53

It would suggest your body doesn't produce antibodies well, Jammyrella, and that would make you special.

edam · 06/03/2011 22:47

Blimey, jammy, you make dh look like a wimp with his proud boast of having had mumps three times.

TimeToStartACHEEKYDiet · 06/03/2011 22:55

YABU some people catch CP more times than once. My DH had it 6 times. My stepdad gets it at least 4 times a year. It is highly contagious, although my 3yr old hasnt caught it yet and been round loads of people who have had it.

cheekeymonkey · 06/03/2011 22:59

Oh loudlass, that is really sad.I didn't realise it could be that bad Sad

ragged · 06/03/2011 23:24

I had a CP as an adult and it was extremely mild. No bother at all.

fit2drop · 06/03/2011 23:30

Cheekymonkey it can be fatal in some adults. My DD nearly died through the side effects of getting it when she was 25. Encephalitis is a nasty complication, not that common but not rare either.

lesley33 · 06/03/2011 23:44

YABU
Chickenpox in adults tends to be a more severe illness than in children. I totally understand why family members would be reluctant to visit.

lesley33 · 06/03/2011 23:47

BTW I had chickenpox as an adult. I had spots in my mouth and throat which made it painful to drinnk even water and on the bottom of my feet making walking to the toilet painful. The GP said that adults tend to get chickenpox worse than adults - obviously won't happen like this to everyone, but more likely.

Gemsy83 · 06/03/2011 23:53

Just as an aside- you CANT catch shingles from chickenpox Grin hth x

cheekeymonkey · 06/03/2011 23:58

But you can catch chicenpox from shingles?

worraliberty · 07/03/2011 00:05

If you plant a feather you can grow a chicken

cheekeymonkey · 07/03/2011 00:06

No way?Grin

worraliberty · 07/03/2011 00:09

Yes way. I read it on the internet so it must be true Grin

cheekeymonkey · 07/03/2011 00:13

Hmmmmm, does it work with diamonds?

FudgeGirl · 07/03/2011 00:24

I've had CP 10 times Sad

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 12/03/2011 23:43

too late for jabs :( DD1 has come out on spots on weds and its the second time she's had it.
DH now on drugs to stop him getting it, and waiting for dd2 to come out in her spots :(

Bumperlicious · 13/03/2011 09:59

Oh Lisa that's crap for you. I bought some poxclin for dd2 which is like a mousse that applies really easily, but she is over the worst and there is about half or a bit less left. Has to be used within 30 days and costs a tenner so I'd hate to see it go to waste. If you pm me your address I'll pop it in the post tomorrow of you think you could use it.
