Sitting watching TV & relaxing a minute ago when someone banged on the door really loudly. it's not the nicest area, I live alone & dont have any friends I can think of who would drop by unannounced. Didnt recognise the car outside so didn't open the door. Presumably must be someone I know for them to stop specifically at my house. Just hoping that they didn't see me surrupticiously trying to peek from the upstairs window at them .

Feel a bit pathetic that as a grown woman I don't feel safe opening my door to a stranger in the dark - I'm going to look mad aren't I?

If you weren't expecting anyone to call by and didn't recognise the car, then I would say you did the right thing.

Have you got someone's Betterware or Kleeneze catalogues? That's who it was last time that happened to me.

YANBU, there's no law that says you have to open the door. I have a big sign that tells most everyone to sod off.

I never answer the door when im I'm alone, unless i can see its the postman. I figure all my mates have my number and would call or text if coming by.

The other week,someone stopped outside my house and knocked on the door (I presume for directions). I had been up half the night with 2 poorly kids who had both fallen asleep (one on my lap,one of sofa) there was no way I was answering the door.
I dared him to knock on my window and he would truly have copped for it.

YANBU, there is no law that says you must always open the door, answer the phone etc just because someone else wants you to. Especially if you have a reason (and not expecting someone/not recognising the car is a very good reason) not to. Is there a way of fitting one of those spyhole thingys onto your front door? And have you got a light that would illuminate the caller to make it easier to see who is there?

Can you look out top window? I used to call down from bedroom so I didn't have to open door and could communicate from a distance.

I very rarely open the door if I'm not expecting anyone, day or night. It's usually a charity collector, energy supplier rep or Betterware catalogue person and to be quite frank, I can't be arsed. I live on my own too - if I had husband to send to the door, things might be different!

I hardly ever answer the door.

I got caught out by the postie once when he peered in the window and saw me hiding behind the kitchen door.

I avoid answering the door whenever possible! Our doorbell is very temperamental so that helps too. I don't like answering the door when it's dark (even if dh is here) or if I can see a clipboard

YANBu it's your door! I'd get a fright if that happened to me at 9pm so I don't know if I would ignore it or go shout to see who it is (I am nosy)

I had just read the OP and there was a bang at the door! Nearly said noooo DH don't get it.... but it was just a neighbour.

YANBU OP, though, I would have ignored it if I was on my own and couldn't see out.

YANBU. Have you thought of getting an intercom so you can ask who it is without opening the door?

YANBU and it's not pathetic not wanting to open your door late at night to strangers. If it's someone you know, they'd likely phone you if you didn't respond to their knock. Otherwise it's probably doorstep chuggers. Don't worry about it.
