To be totally unable to understand how Twitter works

@nannynick is who I am on twitter... gosh isn't that a surprise so anyone not already following me, feel free to do so. Some days I tweet about mindless rubbish, other times I may tweet (and even add a picture) of something the children and I have done, made, baked. I will also rant about my favourite ranting subjects, currently why nannies are still paid Net, speed of motorists in my village and neighbouring villages. And today I was asking how to use Apple Mac!

If anyone needs it, a local person to me wrote a Simple Tweet Guide which is how I got started posting on Twitter. Maybe a useful read so you get to know the difference between starting a message with just normal words, or with the @ character.

I find it useful to follow local people, so I often search twitter for local places and community subjects.

Catnao it can help greatly to use a Twitter client, as that then separates out things so you can see replies easier. TweetDeck is a popular client, which runs on various computer (and mobile) systems.

What's beyond you? What are you expecting, that it's not delivering?

You've really not given it much of a try to be able to say it's beyond you.

It took me a while to 'get' it.

The key thing is who you are following. Who is on your list of followers?

It also helps if you tweet yourself. Just write something, anything that comes to mind.

When you get up tomorrow, tell the world how you feel. Rant about how many times you had to get up during the night to tend to a child, or about the bong of the morning nappies or whatever... surprising what people write and what people comment on.

I am @maidbloke on twitter. Took me a while to get in to it. I have had an account for 18 months but it was only when I got a smartphone that I began to really appreciate twitter. Great for those 2 minutes waiting for the kettle to boil or your DC to emerge from [insert latest must-do activity] when picking them up.

Makes TV more interactive too, e.g. search for #OneBornEveryMinute whilst watching that show and enjoy all the comments - and of course make your own. You'll find you will slowly pick up followers. But don't obsess over follower numbers, just enjoy twitter for what it is - a vehicle for communicating.

Some celebs are fascinating to follow. They sometimes forget they are very definitely speaking in public (with 10k+ followers) and say the most inappropriate things.

I finally sucuumbed and joined earlier today (hadn't seen this thread ). I don't get the vibe..........am on facebook and I "get" that - but this confuses me.

To really get it, you need to follow lots of people and, in turn, have lots of followers. You also need to start tweeting, so that you get 'seen'!

There are loads of MNetters on Twitter, so if you start by following them that's a good thing to do. Also, have a look at their followers and who they're following (if you're on Twitter - as opposed to other applications, such as Tweetdeck - you can see who followers are by looking at people's profiles), and start to follow them.

There are lots of news sites which are always worth following - BBC, ITV and Sky all have them. There is an American site called Breaking News, which can be interesting.

Then it's just about what kind of interests you have - if you're into politics, there are all kinds of politicians and journalists and bloggers who are on Twitter.

Equally sportsmen and women.
