:o llareggub

Click on my profile, either here or on twitter for link to blog. I have twitter tutorial on there.

Catnao · 03/03/2011 16:50

Well at least it wasn't only me who was too thick to get it! Will have another go tonight when I feel like it finished work.

Follow me as well - @TheRealBIWI

The thing about Twitter for me is that if you have enough people on there who follow you back, you can get into all kinds of banter.

There are a lot of Mumsnetters on there, and people just pop up and have a quick chat - sometimes we're all there all evening! Blush

The best thing to do is to have a look at the people who follow me and MmeLindt - you'll spot most of the Mumsnetters - and follow them as well.

The other thing that makes it worthwhile is choosing who else to follow. Most celebs are just boring and on there for self-promotion only - they rarely interact with their followers. (To be fair, they often have so many of them that it's impossible for them to reply to everyone).

Follow news sites, and journalists, and people involved in sport (if you're into sport). Don't be afraid to jump in and tweet someone - that's what it's all about!

It's brilliant when there's a big event on, such as the election or the World Cup - you really feel like you're sharing in something.

Catnao · 03/03/2011 20:59

Hmmm - I will investigate further (and try not to waste hours of my life get too worried if I still don't get it!).

Thanks for help, people!

I only use it for following slebs (and political/campaigning stuff I guess)...

If you see this in your timeline thingy, say;

" Steven Fry Steven Fry
@HeathenOfSuburbia Ha! What an entertaining and intelligent lady you are!"

you can either click on the "@HeathenOfSuburbia", which will take you to my Twitter a/c (or would, if that was my Twitter name!) where you can see what I wrote...

OR you can type "@StevenFry" into the search box, which will come up with all the stuff people are sending to him. This will be a bad route to go down if someone gets a lot of @ messages, though you can look around the right time according to your timeline which will help.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 03/03/2011 21:45

...though I guess it might help if you spelled Stephen Fry right Grin

Don't worry Maryz - I still don't get it either (despite very good tips - thanks all!). But it will now obssessannoy me til I do, so I foresee many hours of pointless struggle ahead...

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 03/03/2011 22:18

Come on, Mary - follow me - you know you want to Wink

Catnao · 03/03/2011 22:22

I am going to follow ALL of you! (stalker emoticon? Wink ). When I work out exactly how....

I'm glad it isn't just me! I don't have a clue! I can see that I can post things and I have followed a few famous ones (that are totally and utterly boring) but I don't see how you connect with anyone that you want to reply to, and if you did would they read it and how?
I haven't seen a single thing on there that is interesting and some of it is totally inappropriate, like our local MP visiting the scene of a teenage car crash and giving condolences-if I was the parents I would be furious (and very upset) that he thought twitter was a place to post them.

MmeLindt · 04/03/2011 05:40

Twitter is all about interaction. It is not a place to lurk.

And it lives and dies by your timeline. If you follow interesting folk, and feel brave enough to answer them when they write something, then you can get chatting to people you would not normally meet.

I like that I have lots of non-mummy people to chat to. I follow lots of writers, who are much more likely to reply to you than slebs, who mainly fall into either the "self-promoting" or "mind-numbingly boring" categories with a few "OMG, did he really say that" thrown in.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 04/03/2011 06:37

This is all really interesting because I've got a twitter account but rarely use it because I don't know what the hell is going on!

How do I get Tweetdeck? Do I have to download it? And those hashtag things - how do people know what they are, which ones to use? Is there a list of them somewhere? If you want to get something trending, do you just make one up and hope people pick up on it? Lastly, how do you get people to follow you? I only have about 10 followers I think Blush, so it hardly seems worth posting to ten people.

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/03/2011 08:44

Google Tweetdeck, and download it - takes seconds - and then register your account.

Re the hashtags, often people use them to add a bit of humour to their own posts, in the same way that you might see on here - an example:

Breakfast this morning was toast and coffee. #cantfacefoodinthemorning

I know that's a silly example but couldn't think of anything more creative!

On here, someone might post along the lines of:

Busy day today, and I'm really knackered.

A 'real' hashtag is used so that you can search/join in on a trending topic.

So if, let's say, there was a big conversation going on about Mumsnet, someone will start a hashtag #MN - you can search the hashtag and create a whole column (on Tweetdeck) to see all posts that have been made using that hashtag - which makes it easier to join in.

You get people to follow you by posting! People will see what you've posted and will choose to follow you - but also, your posts may get re-tweeted by a follower, which means that their followers will see your tweet - so people who aren't your followers get a chance to follow you.

The more you post, the more you will get 'seen', and therefore are more likely to be followed.

I have two accounts on there - one in my real name, which I use very rarely. I must be on some kind of list somewhere, as despite very, very infrequent posting, I regularly gain new followers - I have well over 300 now!

However, one thing that does happen is that companies use 'bots' - programmes that search the internet for key words - so if you post about dieting, let's say, you will suddenly gain various diet companies as followers. I regularly go through my list of followers and cull those who I deem to be bots or likely spammers.

As Mme says, you can't lurk on Twitter - jump in!

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 04/03/2011 09:34

Thanks BIWI. I'm on my phone at the mo but will get the laptop out later and give it a go. You've made the hashtag thing a bit clearer but I still struggle to understand how a hashtag leads to this trending thing. Is it just that someone adds a hashtag, which then gets picked up on and used by their followers, which then gets picked up on by their followers, leading to the hashtag gaining popularity? And what if there's more than one hashtag for a subject? For instance, using Big Brother as an example, there could be hashtags of BB, Big Brother, BBrother etc, so how do you know which to use? Is there a list somewhere?

It's all so complicated. sigh

I didn't know there was a Twitter for Dummies book, might have to see if my library has it. Blush

llareggub · 04/03/2011 10:11

To be honest you are #overthinking it a little. Just go for it!

Question Time tell people what hashtag to use, but yes, some hashtags just gain a momentum of their own.

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/03/2011 10:12

yes, it's not unusual to see different hashtags for the same thing

Tell us your twitter name, SKWK, and I'll follow you

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 04/03/2011 10:18

I keep resolving to try again, basically as a promotional tool, but it does my head in as well. WIll reread this thread and maybe have another go, though what I want to do is set up a new account - I take it you can have more than one?

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/03/2011 10:37

You can have as many as you like, I think - although it can quickly get unmanageable! I have three - one for my business (I haven't got into the habit of using that one yet), one in my real name (which lots of my colleagues in my industry follow) and one in a version of my MN name. I created that one to stop posting MN-type stuff that all my colleagues might be reading!

barleywood · 04/03/2011 10:40

Encouraged by BIWI and MmeLindt I have just jumped in and tweeted. I have been lurking and it is v unsatisfying.

Toygirl · 04/03/2011 10:42

I started using it the other day and I am now hooked. I have no idea what trending is all about though. I don't really tweet anything though as my only follower is David Hasselhoff. I have 2 companies as well but I don't count them.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 04/03/2011 10:48

OK OK, while I wasn't looking they appear to have made it make more sense. So I hopped back in, found a couple of mates to follow and... er... well I put up a boring post and will see what happens tonight.

llareggub · 04/03/2011 11:17

I think I might start using my mumsnet one again too, but my business account is taking up a lot of time.

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/03/2011 11:27

So tell me what your twitter names are, and I'll follow you!
