I think it is too hard to rehome an animal

I bought a puppy a few months ago and I really love him - he was the right choice for us. He cost £100.

He was vacc's and I will pay to have him castrated soon.

He has been such a success that I have been looking into getting him a companion. I would like to help a dog and rescue them but they want stupid amounts of money and loads of home vists.

I am just put off, and it is a shame because I could easily home another dog and give him a good life.

I think I will just buy another puppy I am afraid.

*Hans, which rescues have you tried that want to:

Do loads of homechecks

Charge excessive adoption fees

And which don't let you reserve a dog pending a successful homecheck?

Because whichever ones they are, I'm quite prepared to contact them and challenge them on their policies and get the organisations to re-consider the way in which they operate.*

Please tell, I'm intrigued now.

Baroque- just saw your comment! and it did make me Smile But now am envisioning myself banging head in Green wing style in a freakazoid manner Grin They will be coming to take me away in a minute (and now in my head the man rushing up to me with the straight-jacket is that wee doctor with the 'tache!)

But the comment "people like you make people buy puppies" has my head doing exorcist type spinning Shock Shock. No one "makes" anyone buy puppies!! Angry In an ideal world, people do research to see if they can afford a puppy then if they can, they buy one. If they can't, they don't

But there are some people who know best...

Best of luck with this unknown puppy, OP. Here's hoping it doesn't have any problems, ever.

SuperHans · 03/03/2011 00:15

Val - the Richmond one at Gatwick.

fifi25 · 03/03/2011 00:16

Val - its the well known one in newcatle where they take the strays

SuperHans · 03/03/2011 00:16

Also Battersea.

I also tried the Mayhew.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/03/2011 00:16

yes - good thinking reeling.

Going back to your lovely winking collie.

My cat THAT I CAN AFFORD is now kneading the dressing gown I have thrown loosely around it and purring like a motorbike at me. He also keeps meowing loudly and running off to the kitchen..........not sure what he thinks he's going to get - he's already had his dinner, has water and his dry food Grin

Vallhala · 03/03/2011 00:17

Rescue Remedies, Hans?

SuperHans · 03/03/2011 00:17

Battersea was OK.

The Mayhew was excessive. I had to meet the foster carer with the dog, paid the deposit, had 2 home checks then the 10 year old dog was rehomed. They refunded the deposit.

Vallhala · 03/03/2011 00:18

That's a pound, fifi, that;s why. :(

SuperHans · 03/03/2011 00:18

Never tried RR

SuperHans · 03/03/2011 00:19

I tried PAWS and wanted to give an old cat a "last home" but they were such arseholes

OP posts:
Joolyjoolyjoo · 03/03/2011 00:19

I've got to go and let senile old incontinent dog and I'll-run-away-for-hours-if-i-get-a-chance monkey out for a last pee, or it'll be a swimming pool again! The joys of dog ownership...

Night all

SuperHans · 03/03/2011 00:19

it took about 8 months for a response.

OP posts:
Vallhala · 03/03/2011 00:20

Battersea are shite. They homecheck but are a POUND and they don't have a no kill policy.

The Mayhew are DOING IT THE RIGHT WAY.

Sorry to pull rank but YOU are not a rescuer. I AM!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/03/2011 00:21

oooooo Jooly - that's an even funnier image in my head now Grin

SuperHans - you tried Battersea - and you reckon that buying a puppy for £100, and then vaccinating, neutering, chipping etc is going to \link{http://www.battersea.org.uk/dogs/rehoming\cost you less than £105)?

They also appear to only ask for one home visit.........

issey6cats · 03/03/2011 00:21

vallhalla deffo not our fave orginisation, and i spit every time i see thier very expensive advert on telly, people think the money is going to the animals, its not, every single shelter of thiers gets NO FUNDING from HQ all the direct debit money goes to headquarters and they dont give it to local centers, local to us one center in leeds has shut down so we get people ringing from there and the RSPCA now have a policy of not taking on unwanted, stray cats or cats from people whose circumstances have changed they will only take in cruelty cases so more people ringing us,and people dont know that cruelty cases they are obliged to keep the animal till the case has gone to court but a lot of times as soon as they have won the case if the animal isnt almost instantly rohomable they PTS anyway
vallhalla would love to meet you in real life could habve some interesting convo lol

Vallhala · 03/03/2011 00:22

So who are "the Richmond one in Gatwick" then? Thought you were referring to Rescue Remediies, which is Richmond based but kennels in Gatwick. Confused

ilovesooty · 03/03/2011 00:23

issey6cats you're near Leeds?

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/03/2011 00:24

Mahyhew is £120 - not bad when you get

"It is £120. All of our dogs and puppies are neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, health checked and behaviourist checked before they are rehomed. We also provide you with a starter pack of food and a year's friend of The Mayhew membership."

again - just the one home visit.

fifi25 · 03/03/2011 00:25

Val Thats where most people get their dogs from up my way, anyone wants a dog they go to Longbenton. Its probably changed its policy by now for h&s i hope. I coulnt go in again i am too soft. I only went for a look and came out with a dog.

issey6cats · 03/03/2011 00:25

sooty live in halifax and work at haworth cat recue :)

ilovesooty · 03/03/2011 00:26

£120 seems highly reasonable given the work they do on behalf of the animal.

SuperHans · 03/03/2011 00:26

Val - on Pets4homes it comes up as Richmond/Gatwick and they are pleading for help. But there is never any response.

The rescue places I have had any contact with are Battersea and the Mayhew.

I still think, no matter what you say, that I have love to give and my finances will change. And one dog is happy, I will leave it at that but it breaks my heart to see the adverts.

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 03/03/2011 00:27

I'm not so far from you then issey - I'm in Morley.

BooyFuckingHoo · 03/03/2011 00:28

wait til your finances change then. it's simple. surely as someone who cares for animals you want to give it the best chance in your home. not being able to afford it isn't giving it the best chance. it is selfish.
