To think that Lidl is really blardy marvellous?

Despite the fact that the clientele are really depressing.

Where else can you buy huge bags of very fresh lambs lettuce, kilo pots of greek yogurt, seamless control vests and HORSE BLANKETS all at such bargainacious prices?!

Did ask the bloke on the checkout how many horse-blankets they thought they were going to sell in such a down-at-heel part of South East London, as the only horses to be found round here tend to be found in chunks at the halal butchers. He assured me that the turnover in horse-blankets was surprisingly good. Confused

Anyway - Lidl? Fantastic shop - no?

Yes. I use it a lot. They have a bizarre range of goods but, as you point out, where else can you buy quality goods so cheaply.
When we lived in Switzerland, Aldi opened. Everyone I knew said they wouldn't shop there. The COOP and Migros had a stranglehold over supermarket shopping and they are very expensive.
Imagine my surprise Hmm to see some of the posh school mums in there in the mornings. You really had to drive far away after drop off to get there.
Lidl was the same, there were many raised eyebrows at them moving in. Same mums seen doing there shopping there.
My only gripe with Lidl is they don't sell Marlboro or fresh milk, so not much to moan about.

Hassled · 01/03/2011 11:22

I don't really know Lidl - I shoudl investigate. I do love Aldi though, and the random things they have for sale in their central aisle.

humanfraggle · 01/03/2011 11:23

Love, love, love Lidl.

Have just discovered their nappies too - they're great!

We're moving to France later in the year and very happy there's a Lidl just down the road :)

Cleofartra · 01/03/2011 11:26

Just joking needafootmassage - though we do have dozens of scary looking fried chicken and burger outlets which probably 'recycle' a lot of meat originally intended for pet food.

The greek style yogurt is absolutely fantastic - literally half the price of Sainsbury's and MUCH nicer.

I'm sure ours sells fresh milk.

In a similar way that find the halal shops in SE London funny, I wonder what the Qatari's think of me living in their country, buying my Christmas decs from M and S and my food from Waitrose. Not saying I find your post offensive, just a bit irrelevant.

jasminetom · 01/03/2011 11:28

that you, sorry typing too fast

latrucha · 01/03/2011 11:28

Lidl nappies are the best and cheapest. The olive oil is not the best but it is ther cheapest and is ok.

Cleofartra · 01/03/2011 11:36

The halal butchers down my highstreet (5 of them in a 60 yard stretch) ARE funny. They have a massive scrum of young men in each one who spend all day wheeling and dealing and shmoozing every housewife who walks past. Christ knows how much meat they're selling to support that many staff.

In fact all the independent shops round my way are a potent source of comedy. I love my area. You want decent granary bread? Fuck off to Waitrose (2 miles away). You want a wig? Three wig shops within 400 yards of my house. Grin

Yes I used to live near a SE London Lidl and always giggled at the hoof-oil when it was horsey month! Have got some great cycling and other outdoor gear there, and they even sell wetsuits sometimes!
Only things I find disappointing are the fresh meat (I only buy high welfare so don't touch their pork products, which I am sure are 'good' in other ways) and the tea/coffee (I like the choice of fair trade ground coffees and teas in the big supermarkets). We are now further from Lidl and very near a Sainsbos, so only make it to Lidl once a monthish, when we stock up on good bargainacious stuff!

Cheeruploveitmightneverhappen · 01/03/2011 11:49

Agree about Lidl, and I have only one thing to add-

POMELOS!

I adore these and cannot work out why they aren't hugely popular.

Have only ever seen them in Lidl.

tallpoppies · 01/03/2011 11:51

The baby wipes are fantastic as well as the nappies! Way cheaper and better than any of the others I've tried. Lidl is big out here (obviously) in Germany but it's still as random as the UK ones!!

Rannaldini · 01/03/2011 11:53

they do great ham fresh fruit veg
chorizo
cheese
yoghurt

i live about 300 yds from one

Rannaldini · 01/03/2011 11:54

asda nappies and wipes are excellent and the same price

DramaInPyjamas · 01/03/2011 11:55

I prefer Aldi.

BristolJim · 01/03/2011 11:59

Harvest Morn cereals are delish!

lurkeyishere · 01/03/2011 12:01

sad I know but the green scrubby things with the yellow sponge on the back are wicked from thereGrin they are about 60p a pack and last for ages way longer than the packs from the pound shop some of their frozen seafood isnt bad either when they have it and the icecreams are yummy there too

Cies · 01/03/2011 12:03

Has nobody mentioned the CHOCOLATE yet? Wow! I could eat a whole 200g bar in one sitting if DH let me Grin

Cleofartra · 01/03/2011 12:04

I like both Aldi and Lidl. I think Aldi is nicer for meat - their whole free range chickens are just £4.99 and they also sell british beef and pork which should have higher welfare standards than EU. And I love the Choceur chocolate - 99 p for a huge bar, and it's great quality. Their range of 69p fruit & veg is always good too.

But Lidl has great & cheap tinned tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, jars of roasted red peppers (waaay more expensive at Sainsburys etc) and unusual bargains. I haven't tried their nappies yet but I will (DD due in June).

YABU to describe any part of South East London as "down at heel". Shock

:o

(Though I must say that I'm probably in a minority group as a born and bred SE Londoner who can ride!)

Needafootmassage, as I understand it, horsemeat is Halal although it's consumption is discouraged for cultural rather than religious reasons and so it is always possible that one might find horse in a Halal butcher's shop.*

Vallhala · 01/03/2011 12:28

Oh, and Lidl is fine, my kids love their chocolate especially. :)

schroeder · 01/03/2011 12:35

Mmm Nuremberg sausagesSmile
