To think that Lidl is really blardy marvellous?

Despite the fact that the clientele are really depressing.

Where else can you buy huge bags of very fresh lambs lettuce, kilo pots of greek yogurt, seamless control vests and HORSE BLANKETS all at such bargainacious prices?!

Did ask the bloke on the checkout how many horse-blankets they thought they were going to sell in such a down-at-heel part of South East London, as the only horses to be found round here tend to be found in chunks at the halal butchers. He assured me that the turnover in horse-blankets was surprisingly good. Confused

Anyway - Lidl? Fantastic shop - no?

The Easter range of chocolate is very cute!!

And garden seeds from 29p a pack!!

Massive jars of olives..... Very cheap

Dd loves their big pots of potato salad too

nomoreheels · 01/03/2011 13:21

Hmm Steff - a lot of city areas don't have butchers or bakers. Certainly in my neighbourhood, the closest thing you'll get to a bakers is the Martins or Greggs, and the only place to get meat is Asda, Lidl or a couple of horrible frozen food shops. It's not about being lazy! And this is a positive thread, where's the moaning?

There is one ace butcher 3 miles away from me, and it's great - but it means an out of my way journey and is also extremely expensive. It won accolades from Rick Stein etc and it's about £12 for two steaks. I do go there when I can afford a treat.

halfcaff · 01/03/2011 13:22

steffsteff I am sure you are right, although independent shops are not always cheaper they can be. It's just that I live 2 minutes from Sainsburys and rarely get into town without the children. I used to use small shops and the market when i lived near Peckham, but there's not the same range of shops near me now. I have discovered a local butcher and will prob try that.

GrendelsMum · 01/03/2011 13:24

Do any French muslims eat halal horsemeat?

notanumber · 01/03/2011 13:28

steffsteff

Is Bridgwater a nice sort of place? It's just that not everywhere has independent shops where the butcher will save you some chops.

Take a look at what Felicity Lawrence says about food deserts. In fact the whole of Not On The Label is very alarming informative

notanumber · 01/03/2011 13:28

Sorry steff, that sounded really arsey - wasn't meant to, honest!

lemonmousse · 01/03/2011 13:29

Ah you can't beat a bit of LIDL - but how do you pronounce it?
I say 'LIDDLE', my friend says 'LYEDELL' and my father-in-law pronounces it with a pause in it....
'LIH...DELL' ????

foundwanting · 01/03/2011 13:31

Thanks. I'm off to Aldi. Grin

notanumber · 01/03/2011 13:32

DH says LEE-DELL. The moron. It is LIDDLE, clearly.

Numberfour · 01/03/2011 13:33

Is Lidl worth travelling an hour to get to (fab use of English but I cannot be arsed to think of a better way to put it!)

bluebump · 01/03/2011 13:34

Love Lidl, we used to use their nappies, they are great. I also once got one of those long 'maternity pillows' (not sure of the correct name) for less than a tenner and they are about £30 in mothercare!

CaptainNancy · 01/03/2011 13:34

Heheh- when I lived in Paris, we lived in wig central- a dozen wig shops on our street, it was most odd (never previously having seen a wig shop in my whole life).

Halal butchers were all down a completely different street... sheeps head anyone?

Cleofartra · 01/03/2011 13:35

"I guess a lot of people must be addicted to supermarkets cos they can't all be lazy!"

Well, we've got a great West Indian bakery, which I use regularly. Also shop in the local ethnic stores like the TFC at West Croydon.

But I shop EVERYWHERE - Lidl, Costcutter, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Tesco, and also at the posh independent butchers/fishmongers/greengrocers near my mums and at the market. Anywhere actually where I can find something cheaper and/or better than anywhere else. Sometimes that's the supermarket, sometimes a small shop. I'm not fussy. (well, I am actually - hate buying substandard and/or overpriced food!)

The frozen apple tart thingy in aldi is the BEST I have ever had, it's really good warm with cream. In fact all the puddings are good, oh and the lemon tart

The ice cream and chocolate is great, the flavoured olive oils are half the price too, I love the place. Grin

eileenslightlytotheleft · 01/03/2011 13:49

I'm quite looking forward to going now!

TalkinPeace2 · 01/03/2011 13:52

Look in the freezer at Lidl.
We're having goose on the weekend, probably with whole scampi/langoustines as a starter
washed down with kir royale made with their £7 a bottle bubbly

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 01/03/2011 13:52

Try the vanilla ice cream with vanilla seeds or whatever they're called running through it, my dear lord. It's worth going just for that. The quality of the desserts are unbelieveable for the price, think the most expensive are 3/4 pounds, and they're huge.

Don't get them often, I can't be trusted Blush

cantspel · 01/03/2011 14:05

I never used to go to our local lidl as it was old and grubby but it has recently been given a whole new facelift so i thought i would give it a try and now i couldn't go a week without at least one stop there.

They sell really nice salami either peppered or chilli for the bargain price of 66p and pastrami at £1.50 . There kitchen sqeezey sponges are 99p for 5 where you are lucky to get 2 for that price in the likes of tesco. There pots of pepper are cheap at 59p and i buy these if i dont have time to go to the chinese supermarket who sells a big bag of pepper for 79p.

JsOtherHalf · 01/03/2011 14:51

The vanilla icecream with vanilla pod seeds is Eisstern - about £2 per litre I think.
1kg chicken breasts, £6 - much better quality than Sainsburys I find.
Tinned boneless sardines in tomato sauce - about 50p. DS loves them.

I like Aldi for different things - they do some absolutely gorgeous bread. We had the 3 bird roast at Christmas (£10).

Yes I know not everyone can have access to real shops (supermarkets fault) but if you do you should take advantage of it. By lazy I mean people are addicted to supermarkets for more reasons than that they think it saves time and money. Some people just go out of habit which could be construed as being lazy (ie not thinking about alternatives)

Sorry I don't understand the point you make about moaning.

No Bridgwater isn't particularly nice. In fact some describe it as a dump but I have lived all over the world and to be honest the people here are the nicest I have ever met. The shop I mentioned is on Eastover if anyone lives in Bridgwater and sells stuff near or past the best before date (you know dried goods and tinned stuff never really "goes off"). Not that I'm plugging them. Well actually why not? Loads of such food just gets wasted in landfill, I believe, for some crazy economic reason and in these difficult times, I just don't get it.

Sorry rambling now. I'll stop.

littlebylittle · 01/03/2011 17:04

Fab new hairdryer for tenner today!

pranma · 01/03/2011 18:15

Lidl's olive oil came top in a 'which' survey.
Their fresh meat here is locally sourced, the kiwi fruit are amazing and I love looking at the odds and ends on special.

albertcamus · 01/03/2011 19:05

At my school we have a 'feast Friday' at breaktime; departments take turns to lay on a good spread. When I lay out approx. £25 worth of cheese, cooked meat, salad, fruit, biscuits, crisps & lovely continental Lidl items, the Sainsburys/Waitrose/Asda shopping majority of colleagues vow that they will finally start going there ... I think you have to see and taste how lovely and DIFFERENT the food is to really believe what good value it is. We've shopped there for 15 years and it knocks spots off the horrible Tesco extra which dominates our lovely small town, where it has forced the closure of almost all small shops, sadly. I've never met anyone from mainland Europe who has the slightest problem with Lidl, Aldi or Netto :)

Moodykat · 01/03/2011 19:42

I think I like "LIH...DELL" the best as far as pronunciation (before I got pregnant I could spell!) goes. Think I may adopt this into my vocabulary. (Maybe I should just stop trying big words). Sad
