To think that Lidl is really blardy marvellous?

Despite the fact that the clientele are really depressing.

Where else can you buy huge bags of very fresh lambs lettuce, kilo pots of greek yogurt, seamless control vests and HORSE BLANKETS all at such bargainacious prices?!

Did ask the bloke on the checkout how many horse-blankets they thought they were going to sell in such a down-at-heel part of South East London, as the only horses to be found round here tend to be found in chunks at the halal butchers. He assured me that the turnover in horse-blankets was surprisingly good. Confused

Anyway - Lidl? Fantastic shop - no?

Lidl is great! my nearest one is a train ride away which is a pain but i go when i can. loo rolls are good, the nutty chocolate is great and the meat is cheap, fruit and veg way better than our tesco for quality.

jasminetom · 01/03/2011 12:39

Halal only refers to the way an animal is slaughtered, by the throat with a sharp knife and a prayer. Pork can never be halal but apart from that, horse, camel, cows, sheep etc can be or not depending on the abbatoir.

NotJustKangaskhan · 01/03/2011 12:42

We love both Aldi and Lidls (though for my husband, it's "the store you get camenbert" and "the store you can get mozzerella sticks" - he likes his cheese). Both are lovely and I think compliment each other really well. I quite like Lidl's cheap brand pizza and love their puddings, but I like Aldi's produce and meats more. I have both of their newsletters sent to me email and we alternate and stock up between the two. There are only a few things that can't be bought at one or the other at really good quality and prices.

Cleofartra · 01/03/2011 12:43

"Halal only refers to the way an animal is slaughtered"

Well - formally, yes.

But round our way we refer to the butchers shops which sell it as 'the halal butchers'.

It's slipped into common usage as a way to describe outlets which sell Halal meat.

I like Lidl for Cherry jam, good chocolate, tatziki, (nappies are good but DS older now), cold meats, kids fromage frais yogs (I eat the banana ones I love them)... and I enjoy the randomness in the central aisle. Grin

jasminetom · 01/03/2011 12:45

I was referring to vallhala saying that horsemeat IS halal. Anyway, I am nitpicking. I am just jealous, I would love a Lidl round the corner. Sorry for being arsy

jasminetom · 01/03/2011 12:46

I have had a shitcrap day and taking it out on mn

Vallhala · 01/03/2011 12:50

Sorry jasminetom, you are of course completely right. What I meant is that horse meat can be considered Halal if killed in the approved manner and that it is not a forbidden meat as the pig is.

And jasminetom, you weren't being arsy, you were pointing out how I'd said something which was misleading and daft albeit that I knew what I meant! :)

eileenslightlytotheleft · 01/03/2011 12:52

Okay, on the back of this I am going to try Aldi (went once, left bemused without buying anything). Won't buy meat but anyone got any particular recommendations?

jasminetom · 01/03/2011 12:55

thank you lovely people

nomoreheels · 01/03/2011 12:56

Eileen in case you missed my post, the free range whole chicken at Aldi is only £4.99 if you do want to buy meat. Bargain.

The 69p fruit/veg range includes kiwis, plums and pears at the moment.

Vallhala · 01/03/2011 12:57

Hope the day improves for you jasminetom. :)

eileenslightlytotheleft · 01/03/2011 12:58

Okay, fresh produce, Camembert (from another post). Anything else?

Big jar of peanut butter - 89p. It's good too (just had it on toast.)

6 large free range eggs, 99p.

(I just shopped there this morning so it's all fresh in my mind!)

TalkinPeace2 · 01/03/2011 13:02

Lidl
Chocolate (we have the Easter shopping run booked in - and the Christmas run was FAB)
Tinned fish - wonderful mackerel fillets in sauce for fast weeknight supper
Pimentos for salad - WONDERFUL
anything by Baressa
wafer thin salami - perfect fr canapes and lunch boxes
all the Polish / german meas
cheap champagne
etc etc
((((((Lidl)))))
except that their fresh veg has a tendency to go off quickly.

The ordinary 87% pork sausages are disgusting, though. Textureless, flabby, tasteless and a bit creepy to eat.

steffsteff · 01/03/2011 13:10

I'm sure there are many other threads moaning about supermarkets of which this is a spin off. But God they annoy me. Only today another article in the Telegraph about how the prices have risen massively.
I moan about supermarkets a lot I guess so I have come into contact with people who now absolutely refuse to shop in them. They/we use butchers/bakers etc which are better and cheaper.

Luckily in Bridgwater I came across a shop which sells all those pantry things and tins etc at half price too so I never need to go to a supermarket again (hurrah)I guess a lot of people must be addicted to supermarkets cos they can't all be lazy!

foundwanting · 01/03/2011 13:10

Which one, Aldi or Lidl, does the award-winning face creams, please? And what is it called?

TIA

Woodlands · 01/03/2011 13:12

Yes I was amused at the horse blankets etc on sale in Lidl this week in the two branches in scruffy areas of London I have been into! I bought a bath mat so now DS can sit up in the bath and play, yay.

Aworryingtrend · 01/03/2011 13:13

Itrs aldi i think FoundWanting- Lacura? i think is the name of the range.

nomoreheels · 01/03/2011 13:15

Found, it's Aldi - think they have a sign next to the one you mean plugging the fact it's won awards etc.

"In fact all the independent shops round my way are a potent source of comedy. I love my area. You want decent granary bread? Fuck off to Waitrose (2 miles away). You want a wig? Three wig shops within 400 yards of my house."

ROAR at this cleofartra. You're not in Finsbury Park, by any chance are you?
