Sorry, my DD aged 5 wants a doll for dressing up - but I can't bear the thought of Barbie - but what's the alternative?

Have you seen Bratz? I prefer Barbie any day over Bratz. Yes, she's a flake what with all those career changes but she doesn't often dress like a hooker. Grin

Fourleaf · 28/02/2011 20:41

A nice cloth doll with dolls clothes? FWIW my Mum never let me have Barbie/Cindy, for feminist reasons. I really respect her for it now but at the time I was very sly and asked all my friends to give me a Barbie (or accessory) for my birthday Grin

Yeah Barbie nowadays is practically nunlike compared to some of the dolls out there.

What about rosie's world dolls?

Fourleaf · 28/02/2011 20:44

this site seems to have the kind of thing I had in mind...

tougholdbird · 28/02/2011 20:45

Depends why you hate barbie. I think all the fashion type dolls are pretty ghastly (although I do have a sneaking fondness for the Monster High ones).

EllieG · 28/02/2011 20:46

Quote from book I'm reading at moment -

'Disturbingly 5 to 7 year olds have been found to have a greater desire to be thinner after exposure to barbie dolls'.

Not sure what the alternative is though. There must be some other kind of female doll that isn't all pink and thin and huge boobs though. Will check out.

Now, that's a good girl's doll!

(I had the one in the ballet outfit)

Itsjustafleshwound · 28/02/2011 20:50

If dressing up is the thing - my daughter (6) enjoys the press out and dress up ones ...

greenlotus · 28/02/2011 20:57

If you are loaded you could look at getting a Lilydoll or her cheaper sister Groovygirl if you can find them in the UK.

I bought the Fairtrade rag dolls for our creche, they are charming and you can get quite a few outfits for them too.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 28/02/2011 21:01

I agree with saffy in comparison to the heinous BRATZ Barbie is positively encouraged in this house.

Fourleaf · 28/02/2011 21:02

Oooh off too google Bratz... (I have a baby DS and no knowledge of these things.)

Fourleaf · 28/02/2011 21:02

to google, ahem

Fourleaf · 28/02/2011 21:04

Shock what age are those things aimed at?

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 28/02/2011 21:10

same as barbie 3+ I would imagine is what is on the packet?

I hate Barbie. I have always hated Barbie, even when I was 6. It was the pink and glitter that did it for me. I hate pink and glitter. I had Sindy and thought she was great. However, last time I looked, Sindy seemed to have gone pink and glittery too. :(

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 28/02/2011 22:43

I had Sindy dolls when I was young. I loved them. Why can't your daughter have a Barbie or Sindy doll? Barbie and Sindy do every job under the sun now, not just air hostessing, ballet dancing and the like.

It's nothing to do with feminism, some girls (a lot actually) enjoy playing with dolls and why shouldn't they? Let your DD choose, OP, it won't harm her. :)

MilaMae · 28/02/2011 22:44

You need a Gotz doll.

My dd has a Hannah doll and a Clara doll and they're gorgeous.Lovely bodies and lovely quality. They're expensive but you can get deals, they're just mid catalogue at the moment so look around.I pooled all dd's bday money so she didn't have piles of tat and will pass her doll on. Look on Bambolina but as I say they are mid catalogue so they don't seem to have the full range of stock.

MilaMae · 28/02/2011 22:45

Gotz dolls are much prettier and cheaper than AG they also have that European feel more chic iykwim.

MilaMae · 28/02/2011 22:56

There are some reall bargains on e-bay at the mo and the Gotz Just Like Me Dolls are pretty reasonable £25ish if Hannah,Clara etc are too ££££.

muminthemiddle · 28/02/2011 23:04

I was going to mention ebay too.

My kids hate barbie she is sooooooo dull, and as if a tramp like that would ever be an astronaught, don't make me laugh!!!! More chance of Katie Price completing a physics phd at Cambridge and exploring space.

At least Bratz dolls sometimes have, wait for it, brown eyes and brown hair!!!!!!!! oh and sometimes brown skin!!!!!!!
Faints.

eddiemccready · 28/02/2011 23:06

I loved my sindy doll, I had 1 barbie but was not as fond of her. I was amazed at how bad barbie has got ovr the years. was in a toy shop at xmas and they all look like hookers now

MilaMae · 28/02/2011 23:08

I know exactly what you mean mum.

There is a real shortage of little girl dolls like we had as kids, dolls with little girl bodies and clothes. It's like girls just completely bypass that stage,go from baby doll to teenage.

My dd was out in her wellies with her Gotz doll who also had her wellies on just chillin and talking to the birds, making teeny muddy footprints.
