Parenting has changed so much in the last 20 even 10 years alot for the good but not all I am sure.

There is so much emphasis on risk and avoiding it, all the 'must have stuff' for babies, all the guilt/worry/pressure about are we getting it right rather than just enjoying our children???

Just throwing the question out there to the MN jury .................

Have loved reading all the replies on this thread. I totally believe 'parenting' is just so over done these days and that a bit of boredom never harmed anyone and neither did a bit of being seen and not heard do any harm on the odd occasion.

I have 6 children and my eldest is quadriplegic. Since she was born a social worker has always been involved (as is often the case when you have a child born with severe disabilities). I have had no less than 13 years worth of 'parenting' advice from proffessionals....far be for me to just enjoy my family and get on with life. I have heard more about 'childrens rights' than i care to remember....where as aparently me, myself i don't have the right to work, i don't have the right to a lay in in the morning (ever because my daughters nappy needs changing first thing etc and my husband can't do her personal care). I dont have the right to a night out with my husband, or the right to ever leave the house without my daughter in her wheelchair. All because there isn't enough funding to pay for more care hours. That said i'm that busy fullfilling my daughters various rights and needs that i wouldn't have the time to fit in any sort of life of my own anyway !

I sometimes think that all these rights suck, but don't tell anyone as i probably don't have the right to say so Grin and as a disclaimer i totally believe children and anyone with disabilities should have rights...i just wish that so did their parents and carers sometimes is all too Smile

Its nice to read that so many other parents are thinking along the same lines on so many issues, like when a child is told of by a teacher the parents doen't then go and tell the teacher of, i hear it happen a lot and its ridiculous.
Children are different to adults and as such should be treat differently.
They do need teaching about life more than they need protecting from it.I agree so much with such a lot of whats been said Smile
