I went to see Gnomeo and Juliett today - it's alright seems to be sponsored by Elton John, but is inoffensive, mindless entertainment.

However, the mother next to me in the cinema, had two boys guess aged around 4 and 6, and proceeded to tell the boys how the film related to the Shakespeare version of Romeo & Juliet.

AIBU to think:
a) shut up you are in a cinema don't talk unless necessary, and your kids are sat there quietly watching
b) let them enjoy the film, the film has a very very loose basis on the original, about the title is similar and then all other similarities stop!

blimey did you 'shooosh' her i would have

PigValentine · 23/02/2011 21:08

She should have talked to them about it after the film. I don't mind kids being a bit noisy in the cinema, but adults should know better!

MissyKLo · 23/02/2011 21:10

Agree with keep the fuck quiet in the cinema! I hate hate it when people talk in the cinema - my dh and I got into a fight because of people who would not shut up once! Blush

If she wanted to explain the relation to Romeo and Juliet she should have done it after

No yanbu!

outnumbered2to1 · 23/02/2011 21:10

oh god yes - i had the same thing when i took my two aged 4 and 7 to see it. Some woman in front talked all the way the through about bloody shakespeare till even my 4 year old was going "ssssssshhhhhhhh" at her.

oh and she nearly wet herself when the statue of shakespeare appeared.....

btw - her kids didn't pay any attention to her as they were too busy throwing bloody popcorn around

southeastastra · 23/02/2011 21:12

is it worth seeing apart from that? though i doubt my ds(9) would like it

how odd people are Grin

Tortoise · 23/02/2011 21:12

Taking my DC to see it tomorrow so i hope it is good and we don't have any strange people talking through it lol!

roisin · 23/02/2011 21:15

arf!

lowprofile · 23/02/2011 21:15

14 year old girl enjoyed it.
8 year old boy was bored
2 x 6 year old boys enjoyed it
3 year old girl enjoyed it.
2 18+ Smile thought it whiled away a half term afternoon.

Rainy sunday afternoon film I'd call it, not going to set the world alight, but nothing to dislike, and I didn't fall asleep (which I am renowned for doing when they turn down the lights, although that may of been the incessant woman talking next to me!)

And I bet she thought she was better than everyone else because she studied Romeo and Juliet for GCSEs and was trying to teach her children culture. You can guarantee that if she'd been in an adult film and someone was talking she'd have had a complete strop about it. This is why I hate the cinema - most people are inconsiderate fucks. At least you can kind of understand if it's teenagers but when it's a grown adult it makes me all the more homicidal.

Tortoise · 23/02/2011 21:18

I am taking 13yr old DS1, 11yr old DS2, 7yr old DD1 and 6yr old DD2.

RunAwayWife · 23/02/2011 21:29

I hate people that talk in the cinema and I tell them to shut the fuck up.
I have had people thrown out of films for not shutting up

Ismene · 23/02/2011 22:21

YANBu about the talking in the film, although you are wrong about the Shakespeare similarities beginning and ending with the title - you didn't watch carefully enough Wink

It wasn't sponsored by Elton John, it was produced by (amongst others) his husband David Furnish

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 23/02/2011 22:28

gosh some of you sound a wee bit OTT to be honest - tis only a film

is this you?

Telling people to 'shut the F* up' is really not nice

PatriciaHolm · 23/02/2011 22:28

Mine loved it (DS 4 (almost 5) and DD 6) I really don't think the Shakespeare connection was in the least bit interesting to them!

unfitmother · 23/02/2011 22:29

I'm going to see it tomorrow, I was going to take my Letts study guide so I could talk the dcs through it.

Pixel · 23/02/2011 22:45

Ooh I've still got my copy of Romes and Jules from A level. I didn't realise I'd have to do revision before I could take dcs to the cinema.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 23/02/2011 22:47

Oh dear. Was she doing that talking to the 'kids' thing where actually she's showing off to those around her and thinking that she is really very impressive indeed?

PaulaYatesbiggestfan:

That is shocking that someone was murdered over poor cinema etiquette but I really hope you aren't trying to say that you think it's fine to sit chatting in the cinema. It's not like you have to wait long these days for a film to come out on DVD so I really don't see why anyone would feel the need to see something in the cinema if they're only going to talk through it and ruin it for everyone else.

Morloth · 24/02/2011 03:48

Do the gnomes kill themselves at the end?

unfitmother · 24/02/2011 13:26

Did you have to spoil the end for me?

RunAwayWife · 24/02/2011 13:37

paulayatesbiggestfan no I do not go round shooting people for eating in a film.

I do how ever think it is very poor manners to talk through a film and I will tell people to shut up and I have had people removed from films in the past.

Did the drug addict paula yates not kill herself/die from drugs? Strange person to be a fan of by the way

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 24/02/2011 22:40

dear dear lets not go chucking stones lest you're without fault

Paula was fabulous but yes, she did have a drug problem

I am pretty sure she had the grace and charm to never tell strangers to 'shut the fuck up'

have a Biscuit

RunAwayWife · 25/02/2011 09:29

Shame she could not shut her mouth and stop shoving all sorts of shit in it, then her children might still have a "mother", still better off with bob me thinks, so why don't you shut the fuck up Grin

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 25/02/2011 18:21
