To think that mumsnet should shut down

mmsmum · 23/02/2011 01:41

to let me get some sleep!

I've got into one of the long, long threads and it's like a good book I just can't put down. I've got to see how it ends and I've even taken my laptop to bed with me to read! I think mumsnet should close down or go offline at midnight.

Can someone show me the way to the mn addicts help group? mn is seriously addictive and it can only get worse! Is midnight a good time for everyone? I might get a petition going

ok - well it will go off briefly in about 20 minutes, and then again for a bit longer around 3ish (though seems to be earlier recently)..........so you only have an hour or so to wait until you'll be booted off for 10-15 minutes - hopefully long enough to make you go to bed Wink

mmsmum · 23/02/2011 01:44

Oh I've just seen how this thread looks out in the topic. I can't pick a smiley!

yay thanks Baroque, that will be long enough to go to sleep. I won't say what thread I'm reading because I don't want anyone to spoil it.

Is everyone this addicted? I haven't even been around very long!

i was just wishing that my laptop would crash so i would be forced to put it down and get some sleep.... Grin

coinoperatedgirl · 23/02/2011 01:50

Just imagine when it was actually fun Wink

HalfPastWine · 23/02/2011 01:56

mmsmumm-which topic are you following-please share, I could do with a good read before I finally fall into bed.

mmsmum · 23/02/2011 02:03

Halfpast I can't share because I might be responsible for your insomnia too! It's not particularly exciting or 'good' but I've got into it now so I'm stuck.

I think I know what Coin means, it's not a fun thread, it's an argumentative one (as most seem to be).

I've seen a couple of posters say recently that mn has changed, but I'm new so don't know. To me it is interesting and it's good to 'share' stuff with other people.

I'm new too, and it is SOOO addictive.:)

mmsmum · 23/02/2011 02:15

I have to go to sleep, I'm barely able to read I'm so tired. I might not even go back to that thread now, or maybe I'll just skip to the last page tomorrow, it seems to be degenerating into proper nastiness!

Bet I'll be here again tomorrow, bleary eyed no doubt. Wish me luck getting up with energy for the school run lol

Night

Frighteningly addictive - but don't worry, at 3am it will be allllll over for a short while (anything up to half an hour these days) so you'll have to go to bed, unless you can really be bothered to dilly around on FB for the time it takes for MN to reset itself! Grin

It usually goes down around 7pm on my time. Sucks as that's down time right after dinner and before bath when DD is engaged in a bit of tv.

sunnydelight · 23/02/2011 04:40

Noooooo. I'm in Oz so am often here when you guys are all asleep. From time to time during the day (my time) it shuts down as well - usually just as I'm about to post something. MN must never sleep!!!!!

NetworkGuy · 23/02/2011 07:53

I was 'dillying around' (whatever that is!!) looking at mobile phone sites to see if I could find a suitable phone for someone.

I have previously suggested that MNHQ gets the techie bods to store anything which gets submitted rather than just give the 'sorry, down for maintenance' message, and I myself cursed loud and long when I had spent ~45 minutes typing a long and detailed message, hit "post message" and got that f&£ message today.

Just thought 'Oh s*d it' and would have had something alcoholic, but had to settle for a 7-Up as I had finished the bottle of Baileys given me at Christmas and don't buy alcohol much during the rest of the year.

NetworkGuy · 23/02/2011 07:56

and before you say it, TW, yes I have been faffing about online for the last 8 hours while most of the UK were asleep :)

bupcakesandcunting · 23/02/2011 07:56

NetworkGuy, I always c&p now before hitting 'send'.

NetworkGuy · 23/02/2011 08:21

I do that sometimes, but don't 'as a rule' have a reminder alarm set for 02:45 as it would probably wake me on nights when I am not awake all night :)

EmmaBGoode · 23/02/2011 08:23

No, they can't do that, cos we all live in different time zones! It's not just people in the UK who go on Mumsnet, you know!

NetworkGuy · 23/02/2011 10:04

Cannot do what, exactly ? They ought to be able to just save the items that we are attempting to post, and then empty the queue of 'saved' messages when it is ready to be used again...

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 23/02/2011 10:14

when I hit the send button when it's down I just push back on my browser and wait until it's up again to submit

NetworkGuy · 23/02/2011 19:08

Yes, tried that this morning. Know that it could work for some, but what would be so much better would be o persuade MNHQ to get the Tech Bods to make a fix that would say "Thanks for your submission - it has not gone into a black hole but will appear when Mumsnet's service returns shortly". That would surely be so much better, wouldn't it!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 23/02/2011 19:17

it would yes. It would also save embarrassing moments like when it went off for ages overnight the day they did the Sunday shut down for something or other.

I ended up with 5 identical threads, ALL sat next to each other in Active Conversations...........saying I'd lost a thread Blush

smokingnuns · 23/02/2011 19:20

You only don't save once. Though that one time I didn't save I got to go to bed.

thumbwitch · 23/02/2011 22:38

lol @ NWG!

Yes, Baroque knows it doesn't always work for me because my browser happily updates everything for me, so sometimes I get back to my message and other times it just shows the same poxy annoying MN message. I have taken to copying it before posting it if it's a long detailed post now, but still occasionally get caught out on smaller ones.[grrr]

NWG - good idea - don't know how practical it would be for them, but good idea.

NetworkGuy · 24/02/2011 19:49
    • Stop Press * *

DamianTech is going to look into some sort of warnimg message (I assume near the Preview | Post Message ) not to post if the MN site is offline.
