Trivial question but Im running late!
Kids have sandwiches etc for their tea at nusery, so I give them a good cooked dinner before they go.
Does beans on toast with side of broccoli, followed by fruit, jelly and natural yougurt count?
I dont have time to cook anything else but feel gulity!

Sounds balanced enough to me Smile

anonacfr · 22/02/2011 10:38

That sounds absolutely fine to me. Quite filling too.
They get fibre, green vegs, fruit and dairy.

What more do you want?

iskra · 22/02/2011 10:40

I'd count that.

monkeyfacegrace · 22/02/2011 10:43

amazing, cheers ladies!
Im usually a good mum, but Im RUBBISH at food!

Of course its OK - us mums really beat ourselves up over giving children (or anyone) a 'cooked' meal every day - it really isn't necessary. To have the fruit and broccoli as well as beans is a fantastic meal.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 22/02/2011 10:44

We love beans on toast... sometimes NOTHING ELSE will do. :)

laosvher · 22/02/2011 10:48

It's just one meal, you're neither starving them nor filling them with 24 packets of crisps every day.
Tbh I find it hard to get worked up over food

'Im usually a good mum'
Giving your DCs beans on toast doesn't make you a bad Mum, neither today nor any other day.

monkeyfacegrace · 22/02/2011 11:03

It stems from my dd always being poorly, and having had recurrent UTI and kidney issues, and severe pnumonia over the last 3 months.

Im convinced if I fed her better/kept her warmer/gave her multivitamins/breast fed her etc she wouldnt be ill.

All part of my anxitey I guess!

But glad Ive been reasurred this time. Watch out for another food question-they come from me every few weeks Grin

i wouldn't personally thank you for the broccoli but sometimes, for tea, there is NOTHING on this planet that beats beans on toast with cheese on top.

AitchTwoOh · 22/02/2011 11:07

lol, just noticed other post saying the same. now i have a craving for cheesy beans.

cyb · 22/02/2011 11:08

I would drop the broccoli too. I think we over obsess about vegetables and our children

kreecherlivesupstairs · 22/02/2011 11:12

Broccoli with it would be nasty IMO. If I could get away with feeding DD beans on toast, I would be thrilled. I think she is the only 9 YO who won't eat them [sangry] and Sad

NoSexInOurCity · 22/02/2011 11:12

Why not. I'd try to make myself feel better by making sure it's wholemeal bread, and low sodium beans, but at the end of the day, it's fairly balanced, and the fruit afterwards gives them a good dose of vitamins too. Some days you have time to cook loads, some days you don't, simple as.

AitchTwoOh · 22/02/2011 11:17

re veg, i often do a bowl of crudites with mayo as a snack when they come in from school. they hoover them up while watching tv, while i am making tea, and then i don't really care if it's beans on toast as they've just eaten three carrots and half a cucumber... edamame beans in pods also good for in front of telly snack. and then nothing interferes with the crucial toast/butter/bean/cheese interface.

COCKadoodledooo · 22/02/2011 11:18

Beans on toast with cheese on top is THE LAW for dinner in our house on Thursdays (post ds1's footy).

FabbyChic · 22/02/2011 11:18

Broccoli with beans on toast, that sounds awful.

Ragwort · 22/02/2011 11:20

kreecher - I've also got a 9 year old who won't eat beans - very annoying Grin.

Does anyone else look at these sort of threads and then immediately want to eat something really unhealthy - like a large sugary doughnut that I bought yesterday !!!

Thinkingincircles · 22/02/2011 11:21

bleugh to the beans on toast and broccoli combo. My DC love broccoli but unfortunately DD will not eat baked beans and will daggers look at anyone who proposes such a thing, which means I don't get to eat cheesy beans on toast as often as I would like.

Normantebbit · 22/02/2011 11:21

I thought beans were veg?

Cheesy beans with marmite in the toast. yum.

Normantebbit · 22/02/2011 11:22

"edamame beans in pods"

And I thought you were from Glasgow...

weegiemum · 22/02/2011 11:24

I'm having cheesy beans on toast for lunch now!

But no broccoli

CameronCook · 22/02/2011 11:24

Beans on toast is yum but swap the brocolli for cheese on top - not for nutritional value but for yumminess.

AitchTwoOh · 22/02/2011 11:28

heheh, our chinese supermarkets are pretty good. i just mean in the pods because i have found that the kids treat them as a bigger treat because they get them in wagamama (yes, we have wagamamas, plural, in fact) and eat them by the fistful, whereas they are less interested in the birds eye version.

EveWasFramed72 · 22/02/2011 11:29

Beans on toast was pretty much the first solid food my DCs ate as babies...and they have loved it ever since. It's a great meal...it's not as if you're stuffing them full of lard and sugar...

AitchTwoOh · 22/02/2011 11:32

tell 'er, weegiemum... stick up for us.

btw did anyyone see the zoe salmond programme about low-fat foods on bbc3? i'm watching on iplayer, christ that stuff is disgusting.
