To think that the BBC should not be advertising smoking?

I have just complained about this article

AIBU?

For those interested, my complaint was the following:

The article "A Cuban Cigar for Women" serves to glorify smoking in the worst way, by making disturbing links to female emancipation. "Julieta says goodbye to Romeo" indeed!

"But is cigar-smoking destined to remain a man's world?"
"Are women ready for it?"
"Ms Heller says there is a significant number of women who enjoy the taste, aroma and cachet of premium cigars. "

The health risks are mentioned in an easily missed aside to the article, not as part of the main text. In an article such as this, I would expect health risks to be highlighted in the first paragraph! At the very least something along the lines of "The severe risks to health that smoking poses are now well established... nevertheless, in Cuba..."

The BBC is doing an extreme disservice to everyone reading the article, female and male, by portraying smoking of any kind as being at all aspirational.

I am very disappointed indeed. I request that you edit the article to reflect a more balanced view.

Yabu. It's an interesting article which does not 'advertise' IMO.

Yes bood point - The dangers of smoking are not well publicised at all are they! Get a grip.

It's legal, lots of people enjoy it.

PlentyOfParsnips · 22/02/2011 09:19

It's 'news' - the health risks of smoking are not news, we've known for years that smoking is bad for you. I didn't think the 'Cigar Smoking - The Risks' column was easy to miss, either.

LadyBiscuit · 22/02/2011 09:29

YABU and not very good at reading things online if you think that the side copy about health risks is easily missed.

BuzzLiteBeer · 22/02/2011 10:00

YABU, and bloody ridiculous to boot.
I am so sick of being patronised with this kind of shit, you know what....reading that article does not make me run out and buy cigars (that aren't available to buy anyway). Its just a bloody article, and an interesting one at that.

Find something better to complain about.

The risks are given quite explicitly.
YABU
