AIBU to be angry with the hospital for leaving a swab inside me?

5 days ago I had a small operation - egg collection for IVF. Sadly the eggs weren't viable - which was sad and disappointing - but we have an awful lot to be thankful for (and a brilliant counsellor and supportive friends and family) so we were coping.

BUT - this morning I found a surgical swab really high up inside me. I had no idea it was there and I've now got a temp and am feeling shivery so it's obviously given me an infection.

FYI - sometimes for this op they need to leave a special kind of swab in there. But it comes with a tape to pull it out. That wasn't what I found.

I feel really mad. And really upset. And really let down.

Obviously I'm emotional cos the ivf didn't work so i'd appreciate some feedback on whether I'm right to feel like this or if IABU.

Of course YANBU. I'm really sorry you're having a tough time. This is all you need on top of that. Have you been in contact with the hospital today?

hairylights · 20/02/2011 19:27

Yanbu not at all. That is appalling!

HumphreyCobbler · 20/02/2011 19:28

that is awful

have you been checked out by a doctor for the infection?

I would not be impressed either. I know mistakes happen, but it is not surprising you are pissed off.

Sorry about your ivf too Sad

I would see a doctor immediately. I would of thought a leftover swab would have the same effect as a leftover tampon and cause toxic shock Shock

How could you be being unreasonable when talking about gross medical negligence! Get the hospital/people responsible reported and investigated and get yourself checked out asap - Toxic Shcok syndrome comes to mind but I'm not sure if this would cause that.

Oh my goodness that is awful. They are supposed to have a swab count at the end of a procedure so someone has messed up somewhere.

I really think you ought to ring the clinic, explain the situation, and ask to be seen now or if not possible first thing in the morning to see if you have got an infection.

Really sorry about your IVF too - it must be very hard having this on top Sad

Thanks. I did ring the emergency no earlier in the day and they told me to watch my temp and ring back if it went over 38.

One of the Drs is supposed to ring me tomorrow.

I'm yeah close to just turning up at opening time and demanding they check nothing else is rammed up there!

Really appreciate the concern shown though from you guys.

how is your temp now? i am gobsmacked you were told to just watch it Shock outrageous treatment twice !

OnEdge · 21/02/2011 01:26

would be a good idea to turn up at the place where you had the procedure done to have it checked, they may need to irrigate it or something.

OnEdge · 21/02/2011 01:29

i used to be a scrub nurse, this saddens me because it is the duty of the scrub nurse and the surgeon to ensure that this does not happen. there are very rigorous procedures to follow. it is neglect !!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 21/02/2011 07:53

Agree totally onEdge, I worked in theatres and swab counts were done meticulously.
OP, I would be wanting someone to check me out very thouroughly to make sure nothing else got missed.
Good luck TTC in the future.
