CDMforever · 20/02/2011 20:49

I earn roughly £600 per month supply teaching, minus childcare.
DH earns £50K.

bumpsnowjustplump · 20/02/2011 20:49

Community carer, £3.50 a 1/2 call... pmsl that is such a crock of shite but love the job anyway hehe

prior to that was a area manager for finance company gross £45K

takingchances · 20/02/2011 20:50

I earn £52k a year as a brand manager. DH earns £65k as an in-house lawyer.
Despite this, we live in a small-ish 2 bed flat in London with no garden, no parking. London just eats your money up.

BrandyAlexander · 20/02/2011 20:50

fordie, sorry for a controversial question here, but i thought with all the news stories in recent years) that gps earned a lot more. is that for certain types of GPs?

Portofino · 20/02/2011 20:51

About 55000 euros, as a Senior Buyer for a large company. The Belgian govt takes just over half of that in tax/NI. I have been working FT for 22 years.

minicorrect · 20/02/2011 20:51

I've been promoted twice in less than a year and now earn £37k + bonus - got 2 last year which came to a whopping £1750!! I'm a PA in central London, support the top 3 guys in Europe and am in charge of all Admin in the South yet know at least 2 of the secretaries are on a lot more than me.
DP is SAHM so we have no other income, I commute 2 hours each way for £5k+ pa so we don't have much spare. But managed to pay off 10% of our mortgage last year. Currently pg with DC2 and hope to get something local when I go back to work but doubt I'l get anything more than £20 round here (south-east). I love my job most of the time, but hate the commute and not seeing DD grow up.

ambarth · 20/02/2011 20:51

I am going to encourage my kids to become lawyers.

£7 per hour as a support worker for a two ladies with severe learning disabilities.

MrIC · 20/02/2011 20:52

English Teacher in Madrid - ?1200 per month after tax for 24 hours a week

Noseypoke · 20/02/2011 20:56

God no, there's no way I would encourage my kids to become lawyers. The money sounds great, but the hours expected of you are ridiculous and IMHO that's no way to lead your life.

The people I know IRL that are lawyers are exhausted working long hours and dealing with kids. I'm quite happy earning a lot less and having a better work life balance.

Noseypoke · 20/02/2011 20:58

In fact I'd be interested to know how many of you would encourage your kids to take the same career path as you?

ambarth · 20/02/2011 21:00

Better than earning £7 per hour for crap hours.

ReindeerBollocks · 20/02/2011 21:01

I wouldn't recommend anyone to be a lawyer (and would give up if not already half way through training). I know a lot of lawyers who aren't paid half of what some lawyers here are quoting. Most lawyers in all honesty that I know of in Manchester are around the 40k mark. It varies depending on the type of law and whereabouts in the country you are based.

fordie77 · 20/02/2011 21:01

novice

The figures are manipulated to produce good headlines. They exclude any GP on a salary - between 1/3 to 1/2 of the GP workforce (and a lot of the female GPs). The figures quoted as headlines also don't have NI and pensions deducted - so a self employed GP on 100k actually takes home the same as a salaried GP on 80k.

I'm under no illusions - I'm on a comfortable salary. But I'd like it if people didn't assume that I earn 120k as soon as I tell them what I do :o

emsyj · 20/02/2011 21:02

I don't work long hours now (in the regions). I am very much 9 to 5.30. It is not stressful, although there is a lot of 'brain' type work and everything I do involves research, reading and thought (so hard in it's own way, but not exactly hard labour IYSWIM). I worked more in London for sure - but that's the trade off for getting paid lots. I reckon I have a pretty easy time of it for what I get paid really.

sillymummy72 · 20/02/2011 21:06

I would hope my DC ends up with a better job than me, but then I left school with very little in the way of qualifications. I earn ok money (£44k minimum -some years it can be more but it's a tough market just now) but it's very stressful and I don't have a 'real' profession or any 'real' skills other than the fact that I'm gobby and I work hard ( I work in sales).

sillymummy72 · 20/02/2011 21:07

Oh meant to say - I'll love DC the same no matter what career they have just would like them to have a more rewarding/meaningful/enjoyable job.

emsyj · 20/02/2011 21:07

But agree with ReindeerBollocks - you can get paid anything from £18k to £2m and more as a solicitor - but most are at the lower end of that spectrum. Most of the lawyers I know hate it and plan to leave law at the first opportunity.

I wouldn't encourage DD to do anything other than what she loves - because whatever she chooses to do, she'll be doing it for a long time. Getting paid lots doesn't make you happy (altho I do appreciate that having a degree of financial security reduces stress levels).

I hope not to be a lawyer in 5 years.

BrandyAlexander · 20/02/2011 21:07

Thanks fordie, that's why I was asking! :o I just assumed that all GPs were on over £100k. Cam I ask why some are self employed and some salaried? I read somewhere recently that the demographics of GPs is such that soon more than half will be female. Why are the women salaried? Sorry, lots of questions!

cfc · 20/02/2011 21:09

I'm a SAHM now, but as a newly qualified (but experienced solicitor) I earned £24,000 IIRC.

Hubs earns £50K with the OTE £60K, he's a sales manager.

Barbaracastle · 20/02/2011 21:09

Another lawyer here. I work in the public sector, in London. FTE would be £65k but I only work 3 days. If I still worked in the City I would be earning way more than this but I'm much happier in this job as (a) the work is much more interesting, and (b) the hours are family-friendly and I am allowed to have a life outside work. DP, not a lawyer, earns more than twice as much as I do. We are very lucky.

dinkystinky · 20/02/2011 21:11

£100k plus as a corporate lawyer in london - and I wholeheartedly agree with Noseypoke, its v difficult trying to combine the job with a young family and I really wouldnt encourage my kids to do it and especially not for the money alone! I do still actually quite enjoy the work I do (not so much the clients and the staying in the office all hours crap that comes with it) and figure when the bad days outweigh the good days is time to think about moving on.

ByTheSea · 20/02/2011 21:11

I just went back to work at 55K + bonus a year as a business analyst (37.5 hour week). I used to earn substantially more but have been out of work raising children for over six years. I am currently supporting the family as DH was made redundant almost two years ago. When working, he makes about what I do.

catdoctor · 20/02/2011 21:11

Vet, qualified 19 years, full time small animal practice, posh clients, top of my game professionally but work for someone else; 44hr basic week not including travel, no out-of-hours

42K

Changing jobs to go part-time to be with my bubba

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 20/02/2011 21:12

i did law for my first degree...very hard work and mostly quite dull. i know a few lawyers from my course who went on and got jobs as solicitors and barristers, but work very long hours on middle of the road stuff.

Work for a local council now in a completely different field and get paid £22k for 3 days per week (unless i get made redundant!)

Sarsaparilllla · 20/02/2011 21:12

I earn £32k, I'm a PA for an advertising company, my DP earns about £25k, he works for a bank, we both work full time

I used to get a decent bonus once a year but it goes on company profits, which haven't been great the last few years :(
