Name-Change if you want to - I have. AIBU to be curious what other people earn?

I am a nurse. Qualified 6 years. Work 30 hours a week.

I earn about 25k (with unsocial hours etc added in)

Hulababy. I take your point about lawyers not always having to do very long hours, especially out of London, but there are very few legal jobs which are part-time, ie 3 days a week or less.

puzzledinsurrey · 20/02/2011 21:56

I earn around £300k-£315k pa including bonus. I leave home at 5:30am and last year I worked on avge 4 evenings per week and around 48 weekends. I desperately want to give up work if only I could persuade DH to get a job!

working9while5 · 20/02/2011 21:58

Puzzledinsurrey, could you not save up and never have to work again? It would take me 20 years to earn what you do annually so I am guessing you could save for a few years and "downsize" but still have a great lifestyle. I live pretty simply, yes, but we have a nice life and lunches out and minibreaks etc so I guess it depends what you want?

Hulababy · 20/02/2011 21:59

Barbaracastle - I agree, part time work does seem thinner in the ground, although in dh's firm they do have female solicitors, usually, returning pt after children. However I do think this then affects their potential for the higher promotions to partner, esp equity.

However the legal world is now more and more female biased ESP amongst younger staff so maybe things will change in the future.

hogsback · 20/02/2011 21:59

IT consultant. Basic £65k but with bonus, benefits, car allowance, fuel card and stock and option exercises about £150k on the P60. Expenses really help (never have to pay for a commute, lunches, taxis etc)

Been doing it 10 years since PhD. Lots of travel abroad for weeks at short notice earlier in career but it's just a 9-5 now.

mamatomany · 20/02/2011 22:02

I desperately want to give up work if only I could persuade DH to get a job!

If I was earning £300k a year I wouldn't be putting up with a DH that earnt a penny less than me !

lipslave · 20/02/2011 22:04

Legal aid lawyer - 8 years qualified. £20,000 p/a for three days p/w in the north of England in private practice. No pay rise for 3 years. No perks or bonuses. Not all lawyers are filthy rich!

Am comfortably well off, but almost certainly underpaid for my profession/experience.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 20/02/2011 22:06

"But low paid jobs don't always come with a work life balance either. Plenty of people (and some on this thread) work all the hours and get paid very little."

Totally agree - most sensible thing said on this thread - especially in care work - one of the most stressful jobs (physically, mentally, emotionally) there is and at barely above minimum wage.

Undutchable · 20/02/2011 22:08

It's complicated, but DH earns about ?80k per year, plus car. We pay a lot of tax but at the moment get a lot of it back through childcare rebates, mortgage interest tax relief, family allowance and a tax discount you get for having children living at home. So it's a comfortable life. We're debt-free, and I can stay at home with the DCs. Can't ask for more,

ellasmum1 · 20/02/2011 22:12

midwife,30 hrs a week, around 30k.
(qualified 10 yrs)

sparkleshine · 20/02/2011 22:15

Work as a nurse part time 3 days pw (22.5hrs) Just back off mat leave so not exactly sure what annual will be but around £15k pre tax, NI and pension.

Full time pay was around £25k (37.5hrs) pre deductions.
Been qualified 5 yrs so get 1 extra day holiday now.
Love my job, even though it's bloody frustrating at times.

OfflineFor30Seconds · 20/02/2011 22:18

I will let you know tomorrow (I should find out if I've got a job I applied for)!

trixymalixy · 20/02/2011 22:22

Good luck offline, hope you get it!!

puzzledinsurrey · 20/02/2011 22:22

Oh I agree. To be fair, we have a huge mortgage and we are saving like mad to pay that down so that we can do that very thing - if I can stop him spending money in the meantime that is and of course the housing market recovers enough that anyone would actually want to buy our house!

VenusInfers · 20/02/2011 22:22

Work half-time (20hrs) as Technical Manager for an Arts Centre. Supervising a full-timer and doing lots of antisocial hours for £12,500. Not brilliant, but I do love my job and I only live a couple of minutes away which is worth an awful lot to me...

Good luck Offlinefor30seconds !

big4 · 20/02/2011 22:25

Namechanger here. Just testing it's worked.

Iwishiwasasleep · 20/02/2011 22:26

Nothing. Need to get a job!

Iwishiwasasleep · 20/02/2011 22:27

Good luck offline

big4 · 20/02/2011 22:28

Posting as a big supporter to those you have talked about the inequality. Exists in many organisations; I get to review compensation a significant amount inc. the Banks...yes, yes I know and it's nearly always a theme with a few exceptions where they have done a comprehesive review.

Am an equity partner at a Big 4. You can google our salaries. Big or small we all get a lot out of mumsnet.

For the record, I don't work crazy hours (mostly) but did in the past.

yourhonour · 20/02/2011 22:34

Judge. £112,000 pa.

Massive drop from previous employment but hey, it's public service.

hissymissy · 20/02/2011 22:36

I'm a TA, work 30 hour p/w, I get 10k p/a. Live in South Devon, where house prices are almost as expensive as some parts of London. Angry

victoriascrumptious · 20/02/2011 22:37

65k
I'm a go-go dancer in a feminist strip joint. I keep my clothes on and look disapprovingly at people as they walk in

forehead · 20/02/2011 23:01

I am a solioitor and i get paid well, however not all lawyers earn six figure sums.
In fact many are really badly paid. I truly believe that timing, luck and attitude determine how much one is paid rather than education.

Like Hula, I am a teacher who gave it up to become a TA.
As a f/t teacher I was on 35k (AST) but then dropped to 2days and 16k. Gave it up because life's too short and I wanted to spend weekends with my kids. I have recently gone back and taken a SW qualification but within the last couple of days have decided to stick with being a TA on 9k!

We are fortunate that DH is a lawyer working for an investment bank earning 150k. He always says what a hassle free job he has compared to when he was in Practice. He was streesed constantly and couldn't wait to get out. Most lawyers we know would love to get out. One has recently left law to become a management consultant. She earns more and works less.
