to think the media advocates doing badly at school because someone will always step in and rescue you?

Jamie Olivers '15', Michel Roux Jnr and his recent programme for front of house staff, Jamie Oliver's new school, Secret Millionaire etc etc.

I just get the feeling from the media that 'it's ok to screw up at school because you'll get rescued without putting in any effort for yourself'

Or is it jealousy because i paid attention at school and worked my arse off to get a job?

Haven't watched these programmes but is it actually the case that these people get rescued and set up for life without ever having to put in any effort themselves? It's not like Jamie Oliver is going to put them on a salary for ever after for twiddling their thumbs, is it? Surely all that is happening is that they get one more chance of proving themselves (by working their arses off)- if they aren't prepared to do that, they get nowhere.

fwiw I got good marks at school, but I'm not sure that makes me more deserving than dh who failed his exams but has worked hard ever since. Looking at it from the perspective of nearly 50 years, school is a relatively short part of your life.

How can the odd celebrity chef make a difference seriously? I mean yeah to a handful of people but certainly not many.

Nothing to be jealous about at all when you think of how many ruin their lives by not getting a decent education for whatever reason.

YANBU... but, if I were going to blame the media, I'd pick out the whole obsession with easy celebrity - and the message that no effort is required to get famous quick & get rich quicker. The people Jamie Oliver might rescue are a tiny minority by comparison.
