to think it's rather strange to have a supply of sympathy cards in the house?

Sensitive subject for me this week really with 2 deaths and 2 funerals in the last 6 days.

But I was rather saddened by my mom's organisation skills when I found out she had a supply of Sympathy cards in the house.

Does anyone else find this a touch morbid, almost like tempting fate?

No, not morbid. Very practical, though.

MrsShrekTheThird · 18/02/2011 22:39

was it alongside other various cards? My mother's got hundreds quite a few - of varying 'events' if you could call it that. I find it odd. A few happy birthday cards for childrens parties in my cupboard, but nothing significant.

Sorry to hear your news, Chaos, look after yourself.

activate · 18/02/2011 22:39

I do too

trixymalixy · 18/02/2011 22:39

I've got a couple. They came in a box of mixed cards.

Booandpops · 18/02/2011 22:40

No. I have lots of cards. Birthday. Congrats, wedding Annie and try to keep a sympathy card in my selection Saves the mad panic to the shop which isn't easy as work from home and have 2 Dcs to organise so I prefer to keep a stock at home. Not tempting fate at all

HecateQueenOfWitches · 18/02/2011 22:41

Nope, chaos love, I don't. Grin

I'm sorry that you've had some losses, must be a tough time for you right now. But I truly don't think that having cards in the house can cause anything to happen.

I don't think you can 'tempt fate'. Things will either happen or they won't and having a card in the house won't make someone ill. Buying a pram won't cause a miscariage (I have heard so often that it's 'tempting fate' Sad).

People like to think that you can influence bad things. If you convince yourself that by your actions you can make a bad thing happen then what you are really saying is that by your actions you can prevent a bad thing from happening, iyswim. And that gives us some little, if false, comfort.

But it's all fake.

Again, I'm sorry for your losses. xx

I don't think it's strange, as a pp said, very practical.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 18/02/2011 22:46

Thanks Hec and Boo, I know I'm being daft. Smile

Yes, they were cards in the midst of many.

And thanks all for your kind words, it's beeing a crap week. Thank feck for MN. Grin

She sounds organised and thoughtful. It means she can always have an appropriate card to send instead of ending up sending it late or having to buy a naff one.

BooyFuckingHoo · 19/02/2011 00:23

no not strange at all. you have to buy them anyway when someone passes away so why not have them in the house already.

Baggypussy · 19/02/2011 10:09

Really sorry for your loss..but no, I don't think it's strange at all. Maybe an indication of her time of life though? I keep a stash of birthday cards, new baby etc, but perhaps when I'm old more mature, I'll keep a stash of sympathy cards.

Ragwort · 19/02/2011 10:13

I've got loads - I have a lot of elderly friends Blush - also I was outside a post office once and saw 100s (honest) being thrown away - I asked if I could have them for 'cutting up at school' Grin.

Sorry for your losses. Sad

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 19/02/2011 12:07

So sorry to hear that chaos :(

I do keep them in my stock of cards - I don't feel it's tempting fate, more being prepared and avoiding a panic/inappropriately awful card. Genuinely nice sympathy cards are difficult to find.

(wont have the pram chassis in the house though)

melikalikimaka · 19/02/2011 12:12

No, I have a couple. If I see a nice one, I buy it. I have loads of birthday and wedding cards but nobody bloody gets married!
