I think they should have the right to appeal.

Some peope on the register arenot rapist and are not paedophiles and I do think that some should have their names removed after a certain length of time or have the right to appeal.

I am thinking of someone like a 17y boy who has sex with his 15y girlfriend, for example.

YANBU. I know of someone who is on the sex offenders register who is niether of those things and I think being on the register for life is too harsh a punishment for his crime.

Not as a matter of course pinkstinks but if it all went horribly wrong you could. i.e man goes to park, needs wee, toilets closed, goes into bush, has wee, takes his time, gets distracted looking at a rare bird in the tree above starts wandering out holding his willy whilst still bewildered at beauty of rare bird, walks into middle of preschool teddy bear's picnic, all hell breaks loose...

but certainly I do know of cases of under age sex, vulnerable young people who have made mistakes without understanding consequences.

and apparently some cases of minor sexual harrasement in the work place.

I am not a torry and and can say this is the only reasent measures I see as being sensible. many sex offenders are not followed up and I feel mappa will be much better followed up and managed if prolific offenders where the main focus.

Not everyone who is on the SOR is placed there for life (about a third are not, and there is existing provision for the removal of their names after a set period).

Those who are on for life are individuals who have served custodial sentences for serious offences. This is about two thirds of the register and covers the convicted paedophiles and rapists.

I have a little knowledge but not much and so hadnt realised this was already the case.

oh ok I understand now. im glad now I strted this thread as it will help me with a course Im about to embark on that I have little understanding of.

I was under the understanding that once place on the sex SOR that it was pretty much permanent.

It became topical because the European Supreme Court made a ruling which said that the UK's currnt laws are incompatible with EU Human Rights standards (and presumably the supremacy of the 1998 HRA - bit hazy on the detail of how these interact), so our law must be changed. The Government was obliged to respond, and the rewinds has cross party support.

I also thought once you were on it you were on for life.

Would it show up in any CRB checks that you have been on it after you have been removed?

You are right to say that some people who are on there shouldn't be.

Our local paper recently ran a story about a man who pinched a girl's bum. Unfortunately for him she was a wpc and promptly arrested him,took him to the station and had him charged.

He went to court,was fined,got a criminal record and had to sign the sex offenders list.

Thought it was a bit OTT. I mean in some places like Italy for instance it's almost compulsory.

Found this from The Guardian (2006) old I know but explains the length of sentence and time on the register.

"It depends on the offence. Those given a jail sentence of more than 30 months for sexual offending are placed on the register indefinitely. Those imprisoned for between six and 30 months remain on the register for 10 years, or five years if they are under 18. Those sentenced for six months or less are placed on the register for seven years, or three and a half years if under 18. Those cautioned for a sexual offence are put on the register for two years, or one year if under 18."

Basically, if I'm right, serious offenders get a chance to appeal after 15 years.

Slightlymad: you are right. It is to be 15 years after release from custody.

In what way is it acceptable to pinch a random woman's bum? Sounds like he got what he deserved. Won't do it again.

It is very easy to not go on the sexual offenders registry, you just don't commit sexual offences, most people manage it.

Of course there is a grey area with teenagers, but the current arrangements seem fine.
