.. if we get all 'competitive parent' and post our most outrageous 'my DC is soooo advanced because ....' boasts on this thread?? Just to get it out of our systems before we burst with pride like!

YANBU but it won't get it out of your system. It's not a problem if you occasionally express pride in your DC's genuine achievements to friends etc. They should be big enough to say 'well done'. It's the people that go on and on endlessly about their DC's highly questionable (read non-existent) gifts and talents all the blooody time that are truly annoying

Well, it depends. I always think my good friends with children will be interested in my kids' achievements, just as I am interested in their children. So if DD1 does really well in a swimming class or something, I talk about it. I would want to know if their children did something fabulous too. Random strangers I don't bother with, why should they care?

However, if you're over the moon because your 3 month old is able to lift his head up, save it for your mother, or if you're very lucky, your antenatal group friends, who will understand. There's nothing wrong with being excited by your DC's achievements but most people won't understand.

exactly! I have always been really wary (and it seems quite rightly so after reading the competitive mother thread) about saying anything about my DC achievements as would be mortified to think people are thinking I am some awful competitive mother (which secretly I probably am - haha) .. luckily my Mum is also a competitive grandmother (again in secret!) so we can spend hours talking about just how wonderful my DC are!
