To sometimes be scared when I'm alone?

RevoltingPeasant · 16/02/2011 22:32

This is one of those things that I'd never confess in RL because it makes me sound like I'm 7 but I often wonder if other people feel the same.

Now, I'm an atheist, I don't believe in ghosts or ghoulies or anything like that. Never had a supernatural experience, never 'seen' anything.

But. I live alone (for now) and sometimes... I just have to look behind me to check. Sometimes I just have to go downstairs one more time to look round the living room before I go to bed. Sometimes I freeze when I'm brushing my teeth upstairs and wonder, is that something coming up the stairs?

It's not burglars I'm worried about. It doesn't even have a definite form. It's just something that might be in the mirror, or right behind the just-open bedroom door.

AIBU or do you get that too?

Yeah all the time.

But then I have had ghostly experiences, as well as a 'real life' stalker and intruders in my home, so no wonder I am paranoid .

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 16/02/2011 22:34

I get that. I like to blast on all the lights when I go to the loo :)Blush

MavisEnderby · 16/02/2011 22:35

WinkyWinkola · 16/02/2011 22:36

YADNBU, I'm by myself a lot of the time too and won't even look in the mirror after 11.00pm. Have completely stopped watching scary films as I think that is where the fear has come from. Also am very scared of the dark aswell so leave the lights on at night when I go to bed, and am always worried that when I get up in the night to feed DS the lights will be turned off. oooo I think I might be BU having read that back.

ducknipples · 16/02/2011 22:42

nooooo, don't go LOOKING for things! if you don't look then there's nothing really there, definitely not, nope, nothing at all... i will admit i have done the sprint up the stairs a few times when it's just me in and it's dark. just in case.

for some reason singing to myself makes me feel a wee bit better... Blush

RevoltingPeasant · 16/02/2011 22:44

ducknipples, that's an idea. My singing could scare off anything....

ducknipples · 16/02/2011 22:47

when i was younger i watched a film called the princess and the goblins, the goblins couldn't stand singing so that was how you kept them away. i think that's where it's coming from in my head. logical, i know!

igetmorelovefromthecat · 16/02/2011 22:51

I shit ye not revolting.

I could write a book. Even my very best friend in the world southwestwhippet, thinks sometimes I must be making it up. I wish I was.

kateyjane · 16/02/2011 22:53

I know I'm unreasonable (and a bit patheticSmile)but I have to sleep with the light on, much to DH's disgust. Can't spend the night on my own with the DCs, always have to get a friend/my mum to stay. Can't seem to 'grow out' of this - but think I'm more afraid of real people than ghosts - live in an isolated house (bad idea!!!)
I can only watch a scary film if I've read the whole plot on IMDB and I know exactly what surprises are about to happen. All ridiculous and irrational I know, I am a responsible mum with 4 Dc and a good career - can't understand why I feel like this, I always have since I was very young. I had a lovely upbringing and am lucky in every way, I think I need to get a grip.

MissyKLo · 16/02/2011 22:55

you are not alone...

in feeling like that i mean

when i watched that bloody film where you must not say his name 3 times you know candyman - i could never ever say that 3 times in a mirror! could you?!

ducknipples · 16/02/2011 22:56

oooh igetmore, tell us, tell us! not that this is going to be helping us be less wussy be very, very brave...

RevoltingPeasant · 16/02/2011 22:56

I wouldn't like the isolated house kateyjane. Recently moved to the South-West and had the opportunity to move into a lovely Victorian cottage in a little village... but it was dimly lit and on a dark path by itself and I just knew that on winter nights I'd be majorly freaked out.

You'd never know I'm a normal grown-up with, like, a responsible job and all, eh...

YADNBU - Could never admit to it in RL. Glad I'm not the only muppet one.

ducknipples · 16/02/2011 23:01

i remember when i once stayed over at a friend's house when i was about 13, we were all ready for bed and she comes out with 'did i ever tell you that a man that once lived here murdered his wife in this room? anyway, goodnight!'

and it was true.

bitch.

i sometime feel uneasy in the house, like something is not right

Grevling · 16/02/2011 23:14

Don't forget to check under your bed!

ledkr · 16/02/2011 23:17

me too, used to live alone and was fine but since i've been with dh i cant bear to be in the house at night without him.I am not scared of ghosts (much) but of maniacs breaking in.Dh is back on nights in April and i am going to have both dd's in with me and lock my bedroom door, what a knob i am.

MissyKLo · 16/02/2011 23:19

c'mon

who would say candyman in a mirror?

anyone?!

not me!

iPhoneDrone · 16/02/2011 23:21

Theres no point checking downstairs

If someone is in the house its probably under your bed, just waiting to grab your ankle
