I think tattoos can be fab works of art when done right. I don't have any myself, but OH has them on his back and upper arms and they look good.

But green and red and black stars? It looks like a kid has drawn them Confused

Why?!

Some body art can look incredible and really suit the person.

But that tends to be the minority - most tattoos look pretty naff and I would say 90% of the people I know with tattoos (and being ex-military I know a lot) really regret having them done now they are that much older.

Many young women that have tattoos seem to forget that their skin will not be the same texture and firmness in 25 years time and what looks pretty now will probably look just pretty terrible when they are in their late 40s or 50s.

bibbitybobbityhat · 16/02/2011 22:38

I find fake hair, boobs, tan, nails and tattoos all really tawdry and naff. But hey!

PoledrathePissedOffFairy · 16/02/2011 22:47

I am aware that tattoos generally sting a little when they're done, but don't tattoos on the back of your hand or top of your foot really hurt? There's not much padding there..........

Whatnamechange · 16/02/2011 23:14

moondog first I don't know what spaks mean maybe you should check your own spelling before mocking somebody else
second as I said I. A previous post it was something I remembered from childhood which was twenty years ago , I may not have remebered it perfectly

scentednappyhag · 16/02/2011 23:24

Would it warrant a post if it was her shoes, for example, you had taken against? The snobby attitudes about tattoos amaze me; the fact that people can judge someone's morals based on their skin speaks volumes about their own class, or lack thereof.
It's a shame that such casual prejudice is seen as acceptable among people that seem to see themselves as superior to us inky whores Hmm

FoundWanting · 16/02/2011 23:36

DM had her first tattoo as a present to herself for her 60th birthday. She loves them, and the cat's-bum faces they provoke. Grin

outnumbered2to1 · 16/02/2011 23:42

i have my initial and the initials of my two DS's intertwined on the back of my neck in plain black ink and i love it. Finally got it done last October after wanting one since my 30th birthday.

Eh? Where did I judge her morals??? I just cringe at the poor quality of tattoo. But now I know she's an assassin, all's right with the world Wink

I have a very small tattoo on my hip, low enough for it not to be visible on a regular basis (but when it was done, I was 18, slim and wore low-slung combats all the time so it was sometimes visible then).

I wouldn't have another one, the pain was immense!

Cheryl Cole's tattoo on her hand is awful IMO, its not even pretty.

Lollypolly · 17/02/2011 07:51

I don't get the stars thing - traditionally tattooed stars are for the dead, so it's a bit creepy when people have them to signify DCs / DPs.

I have permanent reminders on my skin of having my two DDs - they're on my stomach and called stretch marks Wink

kreecherlivesupstairs · 17/02/2011 08:31

Me too Lolly. Only one DD but a lot of stretch marks.
I don't like tats, DH was so overcome with emotion at the birth of DD, he had a friend write her name and DOB in Arabic with a plan to getting it done on his arm. No tattoo possibilities in Oman so he carried the piece of paper back with us on holiday to England.
We went to a shop that did them, he had a quick look round and decided it wasn't for him.

scentednappyhag · 17/02/2011 08:37

captain barnacle that part was not aimed at you personally, just a generic observation, eg referring to people as 'a bit rough'.
Although I guess I am guilty of pandering to it, I cover all of mine up before I see my nan Grin

TerrorFirmer · 17/02/2011 08:44

I know that I won't have the same taste in style and pattern in 20 years time. Therefore I only wear things that I can take off. However, being an endlessly sensible type, I admire people with crazy and ostentatious tattoos. I with I had their gumption and devil-may-care attitude (but not their tatts Grin)

melikalikimaka · 17/02/2011 08:55

Tried to get a little shamrock done on my ankle, while drunk in Dublin, all set to do it.

Friend and I looked through the book in shop and started to watch a girl having a great big sunrise on her arm. The tatooist shouted at us, 'It's rude to watch!' It was an open plan shop fgs! We turned on our drunken heels and walked out.

That's the nearest I've come to a tatoo ever. Probably won't bother now I'm an old woman! Blush

5DollarShake · 17/02/2011 11:24

I don't think people who have tats are tramps - what a ludicrous notion. I do think, though, that tattoos themselves do look a bit a trampy, which is why I would never get one myself. Others are free to do what they want!

What I do think is mildly amusing is that tattoo owners love to think of themselves as free-thinking, independent spirits, and yet they've jumped on the biggest band-wagon, style-wise, there is. So many tats are totally trend-based - stars, symbols, arm-bands - and they're stuck with these for life, even when they look really dated and old. When else would you ever buy into something which you're stuck with for life - clothes, hairstyles, decor? No, but something on your body, you'll have for life. Confused

I get that you're doing it for your kids or whatever personal reason, but it's still seems to be the only thing people are willing to look totally dated and off-trend on.

And I do think it takes more free-spirit and independent thinking not to follow the herd and get a tattoo. Grin

MoonGirl1981 · 17/02/2011 13:56

I have tattoos.

A moon on the inside of my wrist, three butterflies on my ankle and a large fairy on my lower back.

I love them. And am fairly confident that I don't look either rough or tramp like.

scentednappyhag · 17/02/2011 15:40

I wouldn't ever use the phrase 'free spirit' to describe myself, sounds far too hippy like and ethereal. I don't think tattoos make me any more or less anything than anyone else, they just make me smile. If the day ever comes that they don't have that effect on me anymore, I'll put on a jumper Grin
I'm a unique little snowflake. Just like everybody else Grin

I love tattoo's on women. The suicide girls are beautiful

Beautiful Tattooed Women

Mammie81 · 17/02/2011 16:08

Oh and I have a treble clef on my neck and 'I got Life' on my foot. I look fairly mainstream I would say, no one would ever know, how does that make me look a tramp.

deepbluewave · 17/02/2011 16:23

I have tattoos, on my back, wrist, foot and inner arm.
They all mean something very special to me.
ie- symbols
Im a professional and dont look like a tramp either.
It depends on the person, the quality of the tat and what it is.

Swallows, Chinese writing, and any other 'tat craze' is NOT a good idea. It should be personal and well done.

I love tats on blokes too, if they are well done and the right size for the area.
I knew someone, with a tiny barcode across the top of his arm! what was the point!

KirstyJC · 17/02/2011 16:35

I have a dragon tat at the top of my thigh, done 18 years ago. I deliberately chose a place that I would be able to cover up when I wanted (swimming shorts etc) and I still love it to this day.

The only problem is that although it started out a 'normal' dragon, as my skin/thighs expand with age it is turning into one of those long Chinese dragons - I reckon it will have doubled in length by the time I get to 50!Grin Then again, I doubt that too many people will want to see my upper thighs by then anyway so it's not like anyone will notice......!

weeper · 17/02/2011 16:55

each to their own, if you like/want a tattoo that's fair enough, I think the 'tramp stamp' comments are a bit snobby - if you don't like them, don't get one.

BUT, what I will never understand is people who get their DCs names tattooed on them. Er, they're your child, you're never going to forget their name! It just seems cringey somehow to me. I'd have died of embarrassment as a kid if one of my parents had a tattoo of my name. Do people do it to show how very special their little darling is to them or something?

findingthepath · 17/02/2011 17:15

I agree you cant judge a person on if they have a tatr or not. That would just be stupid Hmm

My best friend had one done on her back and it looked great of an angle with a haert and it really suited her.

Then she had the Ramstian logo and Simple plan logo like a s and a p together and they look unfinshed and crap but they are on her wriste and her tops dont cover it and i think it looks awful. Then on the other wriste she has a bat but it looks like the baccardi bat and she does not drink - she is tea total and it just dones not look good or make sence Confused

I think she will regreet it when she is 50 but who knows she likes it and thats all that counts so i have not told her my opioin as she does not need to hear it.

In conclusion i like tat's but only when they are dont right. I would love to hyave one but i'm too scared of what my mum would do to me Blush - i'm 29 this years Confused

PaisleyLeaf · 17/02/2011 17:18

I usually feel a bit sorry for women I see with tattooes. They often seem to smack of low self esteem and sometimes even self harm. And they usually look like ones they'd regret.

So all the star tattooes on here were all done before they got popular and have personal meanings?
