I think tattoos can be fab works of art when done right. I don't have any myself, but OH has them on his back and upper arms and they look good.

But green and red and black stars? It looks like a kid has drawn them Confused

Why?!

my boyfriend has both arms tattooed and they are very lovely , however they were very painful and expensive, so I love tattoos but generally not the type mentioned in the op, sorry rambled a bit there.

Dawnybabe · 16/02/2011 19:27

I've got a very small black scorpion on my shoulder from my uni days when I loved astrology, guess my star sign. It still looks cool but now I'm a mum I'm quite grateful I was discreet.

Whatnamechange · 16/02/2011 19:29

I hate the term tramp stamp , I have a lowerback tattoo which I got after tears of deliberation and IMO IRS beautiful I am most certainly not a tramp and to judge people on their tattoos is pure snobbery . When I was young there was a tattoo shop which fascinated me itlooked amazing outside , there was a saying on the wall which I agree with to this day ,
the only difference with people who are tattooed and not tattooed is people who are tattooed don't care if your tattooed or not , I might get it tattooed above my tramp stamp .
I will get off my high horse now I'm off to greggs .

if its across the whole lower back its known as arse antlers as opposed to tramp stamp.

usualsuspect · 16/02/2011 19:35

I also find it strange that a woman with a tattoo is regarded as a tramp

Whatnamechange · 16/02/2011 19:37

I have a very weird vision of my arse somehow looking like Rudolph .

DontHateThePlayerHateTheGame · 16/02/2011 19:44

What do you guys think of HCP's with visible tattoo's?

My friend who is a nurse covered hers up for interview as she was worried it would go against her.

She has had some comments about them looking 'unprofessional' (tattoo is on inside of wrist).

Her argument is that she looks after patients from all walks of life with tattoo's/piercings, and it doesnt affect her skills in caring, so why is it a problem?

BuzzLiteBeer · 16/02/2011 19:48

Wouldn't care unless they are on the hands, face or neck.

pointydog · 16/02/2011 19:55

Some people do think they are unprofessional so it would be better to have a tattoo in a place where it can be covered for work. Hard to cover your wrist.

Or develop a good argument in countering such opinions if they bother you.

pointydog · 16/02/2011 19:56

Looking after patients from all walks of life isn't a good argument because that also means she will deal with many people who really dislike them and see them as unprofessional.

MordechaiVanunu · 16/02/2011 19:57

I don't like tattoos on anyone, men or woman. I always think they make anyone look a bit cheap and rough.

I know they're probably not, but that's the impression tattoos give me..

I have managed to not visibly cringe when friends have had tattoos. (very lovely non rough type friends who now look a bit rough.)

lionlilac · 16/02/2011 20:07

Tattoos make me cringe as I imagine the pain they must have gone through

SleepyCaz · 16/02/2011 20:11

captainbarnacle are you in The Midlands?! I know someone who has just had that EXACT tattoo! Grin

feekychucker · 16/02/2011 20:19

I have 3 stars on my wrist. I had them done before stars became popular and have never regretted having them done. They are small enough to be covered by my watch if need be and having that tattoo meant a lot to me and still does. It's my skin, and I can do what I want to it, if people don't like it they don't have to look at it.

Mumcentreplus · 16/02/2011 20:24

I don't mind tats..but it depends some people they suit others they don't kinda like skinny jeans Grin

I do think the type of tattoo makes a difference I mean... love and hate tattoed on your knuckles with a needle and biro? naff & rough..a beautiful back tattoo designed executed by a professional artist is different..also why you have your tattoos..many people have them for many personal reasons and events.

My Dh has them ..I have considered one in the past ..I'm waiting for my mid-life crisis to kick in and I hope before I get too saggy Grin

persephonesnape · 16/02/2011 20:26

tattoo-wise, i have full sleeves, chest, tops of feet and some work in progress on my back and thighs. I am a fairly succesful professional with an income above the national average, and bring up three children on my own, since their father buggered off with a (non-tattooed and therefore clearly a paragon of virtue...) woman. My DCs are polite, respectful, doing very well at school. I have been celibate for 17 months (not that i'm counting... Hmm ) so i'm hardly easy.

people may well judge me on my appearance. I view that as their loss as I'm generally rather wonderful! Wink

howevere i tend to cover up for work, as I'm aware that first impressions can be off-putting because people have a whole load of ridiculous judgemental stereotypes about people with tattoos and particularly women. I prefer to give people a chance by not letting their prejudices cloud their opinion of me before they know me Grin

melpomene · 16/02/2011 20:31

I saw a woman at the gym this week who had one arm almost completely covered in tattoos (shoulder to wrist) while her other arm had no tattoos. It looked disturbingly asymmetrical.

captainbarnacle · 16/02/2011 20:48

Nope, quite a way from the midlands Grin - think it must be a popular tat then!

The lady in question is very sweet. It's obviously a difference in our tastes?

Like I said - tattoos don't bother me at all as long as they are quality ones

re professionalism a good friend of mine works in what I consider to be a fairly stylish, media type job and she will not employ anyone with visable tattoos.

In her opinion her clients don't like genrally like them and there are plenty of people without them to employ.

I was quite suprised by the attitude but eye opening.

theinet · 16/02/2011 21:45

from a male perspective i think tattoos are generally a bit rough but then i am 37 and am just outside that generation where it became "normal" to have them.

None of my fairly large group of friends have tats.

On men they can sometimes look ok, if the right design & extent . Sometimes a very heavily tattooed arm on a man can look a work of art.

"trend" tattoos like chinese characters, stars, bands etc look awful.

when i see a women with a visible tattoo larger than a 50p i always assume she must be a bit rough - sorry.

StarlightPrincess · 16/02/2011 21:54

from a male perspective

No it's from your prospective, your gender in this circumstance, is irrelevant. Some men love women with tattoos. Some don't. Vice-versa for women. It's a personal thing, not gender related...

moondog · 16/02/2011 21:59

'the only difference with people who are tattooed and not tattooed is people who are tattooed don't care if your tattooed or not'

Whatname, the fact that the statement is so clumsily articulated with such poor syntax spaks volumes.

usualsuspect · 16/02/2011 22:03

theinet Do you think a man with a tattoo is a tramp?

persephonesnape · 16/02/2011 22:18

As my tattoos declare me as 'a bit rough', they seem to have had the bonus effect of constructing an inpenetrable barrier between me and people who judge me on the basis of how i choose to decorate myself.

Just as well i'd never really want to be (cough!) ahem! 'entertained' by someone who thought i was a bit rough, huh? :) Admittedly having a lot of tattoos can attract a certain type of person. I tend to steer well clear. :)

incidentally, and without wishing to pre-s'pose what other people might find attractive - I personally find generic fake hair, fake boobs, fake nails, fake tan somewhat hideous - but that seems to be an acceptable (generic, lad mag-ish) measurement of what modern society finds beautiful or attractive. That doesn't mean that i think women who alter themselves cosmetically are slappers. Just that it is seen to be more acceptable (and less....rough Hmm) for certain types of body modification or cosmetic enhancement.
