To want that Disney pop up off mumsnet?

MilaMae · 16/02/2011 11:50

It just popped up in my face. The fridge magnet thing upset me a tad.

We're all struggling at the moment, worried about jobs etc. I've got about as much chance of winning the lottery as taking my dc to Disney. My kids continuously nag about it,I continuously say dream on.

I don't feel I have to take them,I just want to. There are enough marketing pressures re kids I come on here to converse with mums not to be made to feel sad.

I think it's a bit insensitive at the moment at a time when many of us shouldn't/can't dream of spending £2K on a dream holiday.

I thought Mumsnet was better than that,a little disappointed.

Not seen the ad on here tbh, but I know I hate their current tv ad for eactly the same reason.

MmeLindt · 16/02/2011 11:55

Hmm, sorry but I think you are being unreasonable.

MN have to fund the site and it is not their fault that some members cannot afford Disneyland.

For that matter, there are ads for other holidays, ads for Boden, for Ford.

Sorry that you are upset by it, but I don't really think that you can blame MN for it.

MilaMae · 16/02/2011 11:55

I've stopped the kids from watching the channels where it appears on so I do avoid it but it just literally just popped up right in my face.

I'm guessing Mumsnet got paid a masseeeeeeeve amount of money to put it on.I honestly thought principles came first on here, obviously a little naive Sad.

oh for heavens sakes.... you have stopped your kids watching tv because of an advert? how about teaching them that they cant have everything they see...

MilaMae · 16/02/2011 11:57

Clothes are clothes, cars are cars you can buy plenty of alternatives to Boden. Disney however you can't and people to be frank shouldn't be dreaming about dream holidays at a time like this,it doesn't encourage responsible money management and doesn't exactly cheer one up.

GwynAndBearIt · 16/02/2011 11:57

Oh God, I well up every time I see that add. "So, when are you telling them" probably fucking never at this rate and it makes me want to cry because I would want to see my children's happy little faces when I tell them

Totally with you on this one MilaMae.

Sad
squeakytoy · 16/02/2011 11:58

and you can take your kids to blackpool pleasure beach or alton towers or any other theme park in this country.. so YABU and more than a little bit ridiculous..

GwynAndBearIt · 16/02/2011 11:58

ok maybe not ban the add and the telly watching, - but it does upset me....

BooBooGlass · 16/02/2011 11:58

Hmm Are you for real? I'm broke as a joke but I can't say adverts for luxuries offend me (unless it's that bloody 'Thomas cook ih' advert, but that's a whole other thread)

MmeLindt · 16/02/2011 12:00

Sorry, that you are upset about it but I think that you and your DC have to accept that there are things that you just cannot afford to do/buy.

My DC harp on about a Wii but I have said that it is too expensive and I won't be buying it.

squeakytoy · 16/02/2011 12:00

what is wrong in your children wanting something that is out of reach? you dont HAVE to be able to give them everything they want..

A child that is given everything that they get excited about is just a spoilt brat.

MilaMae · 16/02/2011 12:00

Squeaky I have thanks, they have nothing other than at Xmas/bday.

I just think Disney ads are very clever and I don't want my dc idealising something that is basically an overpriced holiday.I try to avoid materialism.

However they're good kids, ask for nothing and I'd love to treat them.

It also concerns me that mums not as strong as myself could be swayed by that ad ,it's an unnecessary pressure. Much preferred the Sainsbury 5 meals for £20 Smile

I just think there are better ways for a parenting site to make money.

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 16/02/2011 12:02

Mila
MN already turn down ads from Nestle. And other companies whose products would not sit well with the users of the website.

MilaMae · 16/02/2011 12:03

Well why not Disney,I think the whole Disney brand thing is highly questionable to be frank.

OP posts:
moogster1a · 16/02/2011 12:05

my mum used to tell me that only children who were dying went to Disneyland 'cos every week there'd be some campaign in the local paper to raise funds for ill kids to go there so I've always associated it with a rather unpleasant giant hospice image!
I've been known to threaten small children that if they're not good we'll go to Disneyland.

MilaMae · 16/02/2011 12:06

Don't think my dc will buy that Moog Grin.

OP posts:
HecateQueenOfWitches · 16/02/2011 12:08

Sorry, but I agree with mmelindt.

There are many people who can easily afford this (I'm not one of them, but I live in hope Grin)and may be interested.

Companies advertise. They pay mn. it's how they afford to run the site.

By your logic, nobody should ever advertise anything anywhere because someone somewhere seeing it will be unable to afford it and it will make them unhappy.

It's not insensitive unless advertising a car is insensitive to those who can't afford one, or advertising food is insensitive to the hungry.

The things I see that I just can't afford! god, the list is endless! But I accept that that's just tough for me. I can't afford it. Doesn't mean that other people should not be advertised to.

DuplicitousBitch · 16/02/2011 12:08

ffs, crying at disney adds, it is a pile of shite.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 16/02/2011 12:10

oh, just MASSIVE x-posting there. when I started typing I was right behind mmelindt Grin

parenting website - disney. seems just the sort of thing you would advertise here.

MmeLindt · 16/02/2011 12:11

They should not advertise Sainsbury's food on here, cause I am on a diet.

They should advertise activities based in the UK on MN cause I live in Switzerland and cannot go. And it makes me homesick.

How old are your DC, MilaMae?

I find telling my DC exactly what something costs and working out how long they would have to save their pocket money to go there is very helpful.

MmeLindt · 16/02/2011 12:12

Moog
That is horrible.

MilaMae · 16/02/2011 12:13

See I haven't got a problem with the MWarner one as it's in a band along the tip, pretty inconspicuous.

The Disney one however right at eye level,it pops up,moving pictures and the fridge magnet thing-come on. Disney know what they're doing they're marketing experts which is why they've successfully fleeced parents for years.

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 16/02/2011 12:14

It sounds like your objection is that Disneyland's advertising is clever and successful.

Which their ad agency will be delighted to hear.

DuplicitousBitch · 16/02/2011 12:14

dd is currently obsessed with going to Sharm El Sheikh after watching some cbbc program about a family going there.

should i smash up the tv?
