I namechange when I don't want to be identified in RL, but so many user names have been taken already. But, if you do a quick search, the majority of them have never been used for posting.

Shouldn't there be some sort of rule that says that if you don't use a name within 3 months of registering it, then it will be taken away from you.

they may well have been used in Chat. That is only kept for, I think it's 90 days. It is where many people post things that they don't want to be hanging around for ever, whether they have namechanged or not.

I suppose if the name no longer exists on the searchable system, it could be made available but I would imagine that would be quite complicated for the tech people? or maybe not. I don't know.

If you felt strongly enough about it, maybe you could badger persuade the tech people to release it?
