to ask if you would use donated breastmilk if it was available rather than formula?

Inspired by another thread.

I personally would rather use donated milk. If you wouldn't - why not?

Me too UsualSuspect.

Formula babies are not malnourished far from it. What a hideous inaccurate statement.

My babies were malnourished when bf, formula nourished them.

Re intelligence I remember evidence showing previous data re intelligence and bm being discredited a while back. Intelligence is very hard to base any stats on as bf babies are far more likely to have healthy eating mothers and mothers more likely to stimulate said baby.

The debate was always over 3 points or so big whoop,3 points could go up or down either way.

Also my mothers family has a long history of ff,no bm what so ever.My grandmother's kids went to grammar school, uni then were teachers and one is a medical scientist. None have any health problems what so ever.

My dad's mother bf all hers for ages, only my dad went to uni and he had several allergies, food intollerences.
I was bf,my sister wasn't at all.My sister got into a top Russell group uni (I went to a poly)and has written books and is v successful in her field. She has no allergies.I have sensitive skin, fertility probs.

Any sane person accepts intelligence and health are down to genes, healthy living and life opportunities.6 months of bm makes buggar all difference in the grand scheme of things however much you chant breast is best(which nobody actually disputes).

Kerrianne · 15/02/2011 18:42

I think children are far more likely to make a bee line for Macky Dees and other unhealthy foods if they have neurotic parents who think anything with a bit of salt, fat or sugar is the anti christ.

BF or FF, who really cares as long as the child is being given a healthy life?

TimeWasting · 15/02/2011 18:43

Who said that about malnourishment Mila?

schmee · 15/02/2011 18:44

RockLover - I'm with you. They are a freak show. If they are so happy that they are doing the right thing, why do they need to make other people feel bad. I don't get it. Your baby will be absolutely fine. xx

bubbleymummy · 15/02/2011 18:45

Schmee - what is wrong with wanting bm to be considered as 'normal' as cow's milk?

For those concerned about bm carrying Cjd - why aren't you worried about cow's milk?

LeonieDelt - you seem ideally placed to answer my question about why some people who bf seem to want to make people who don't feel like shit. Can you help because I'm genuinely at a loss to understand why you would?

usualsuspect · 15/02/2011 18:49

The mothers who I knew who bf just got on with it ..no banging on and on about it.

MilaMae · 15/02/2011 18:49

You did-"if you're malnourished in early life"-ridiculous comparison especially as some breast fed babies are more likely to be underweight in the early days before bf is established.

whomovedmychocolate · 15/02/2011 18:50

I have donated breast milk - you have to go through a lot of intrusive questions first to make sure you are not carrying diseases. And you tend to have recently had a baby so you have had lots of tests.

I would use donated breastmilk for any future children if I was unable to breastfeed for any reason. The benefits massively outweigh any negligible risk IMHO.

Kerrianne · 15/02/2011 18:50

I think a child's health is mainly down to genetics, environment and good parenting.

The junkie in the next street used to BF her baby and spend the milk tokens on tobacco. She'd then smoke right over the pram.

I don't get people who really care whether other people BF or FF, it's no-one elses business.

Ryoko · 15/02/2011 18:51

bubbleymummy

Soya milk for me, I do eat cow stuff on the odd occasion but until a few years ago it used to make me feel sick, but having to go out with people for the odd meal and that, seemed to make me slowly get used to it, so I can eat cake with cream and cheese now, no idea if I can drink milk I've not touched the stuff since the BSE outbreak.

bubbleymummy · 15/02/2011 18:51

Well Rock, I can understand your frustration because unfortunately there is no alternative to formula if bf isn't working out. Stick with the bf though - it does take time. Even if you are currently mix feeding it is still worthwhile - have a look on the feeding boards if you need some support.

MilaMae · 15/02/2011 18:52

Leonie so what is so "crucial" and what "outcomes are set in motion" that a healthy diet, exercise and stimulating childhood can't provide-do tell????

RockLover · 15/02/2011 18:52

Bubble: BM is not a commercial product and will never be sold on supermarket shelves or used in recipes I am presuming.

BM is normal for babies and only babies, it does not have the hundreds of uses that cows milk has and it never will.

Hence the two can't really be compared.

schmee · 15/02/2011 18:54

Bubbleymummy - did your child scream every time it saw your tit?

I did persevere offering my breast to one of my children for about 4 months to no avail. I'm really hopeful that things will work out for Rock, but it's not really your business to tell her to stick with the bf.

I would, as long as it wasn't taking a scarce resource from someone else who needed it more - i.e. preterm babies in SCBU. Wouldn'y you far rather have milk from a human than from another species, which is what formula is?

Would definitely not take breastmilk if it was factory farmed though. Imagine sheds full of women all crying at milking time to get their engorged boobs plugged into the milking machines....

For those concerned about bm carrying Cjd - why aren't you worried about cow's milk?

Possibly because Mad Cow Disease has been eradicated from the dairy herd?

TimeWasting · 15/02/2011 18:57

Mila, I said I didn't think ff babies were malnourished, just saying that early nutrition does have an effect in later life.

HHLimbo · 15/02/2011 18:57

That is why I will always BF if possible, and would prefer to use (screened) BM rather than FF if it was ever available.

MilaMae · 15/02/2011 18:59

Leonie if you feed your dc on a balanced healthy diet and provide plenty of exercise your children will be healthy and grow into healthy adults.

I've never particularly craved "lean" children just healthy children with the correct bmi.

As a parent I'd only worry about obesity and obesity is caused by feeding your dc too many pies and providing no exercise and a sedentary lifestyle-fact.
