I think its adorable and sweet,

was watching the wright stuff today and people from west indies background, had no objection to it. and lest we forget its a mouse! not a person

back in the day El Nombre was far more gimmicky but no one had an issue with that, I think its actually the best thing on ther atm, that is all :)

Wow. Just joined Mumsnet and interesting to see debate about Rastamouse. It's a sweet, well meaning, entertaining cartoon. Surprised to hear such negativity from PosieParker. Unsure whether she is being serious or trying to raise other people's heckles.

There are so many English dialects (and I don't mean accents. I mean grammar and word usage) within this country it is amazing and I love it. We are a diverse nation and it really saddens me to think that some people still feel that RP English is the right way and the most valuable way.

In the dialect of the local youth: Chillax! It's only a TV show.

chubbleigh · 14/02/2011 17:18

For lots of kids Rastamouse is a reflection of the people/culture that surrounds them, more so than programmes like Balamory, (is that ethnic minority programming for Scottish Islanders?).
Rastamouse is already a hit in my neck of the woods. Its brilliant, we love it, I hope it is here to stay. We are Irish RC background but live in the city so can relate.

One love!!!!

Me is expecting rip-offs on You Tube with reefers and ting any day now.

BonzoDooDah · 14/02/2011 17:22

Rastamouse is Fab! I record it and watch it when the kids are in bed Grin
I think it's brilliant to have another cultural dimension to the programs my children see. Especially as I live in predominantly white suburbia area. The more my children perceive it to be normal to hear different voices and see different faces the better.

PosieParker do your kids watch Waybaloo???

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 17:37

Erm....same as a person from Newcastle has the same accent as someone from London.....oh no, we call that an English accent.

Rastafari is a religion, they believe they are the original Israelites and as such are superior to white people.

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 17:39

I don't like a program based upon a section of society with racist and sexist beliefs.

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 17:41

I would have the same objection to a program featuring white people from Norwich if they were defined by a religion with, at best,a questionable history.

Tical · 14/02/2011 17:48

Your knowledge is very poor on this topic, TPP, so I would seriously stop now and save yourself the embarrassment.

I also cannot believe you could turn a thread about a cartoon on CBeebies into an attack on Rastafarianism. Bonkers!

Tical · 14/02/2011 17:49

While you're at it, in the Queen's English, I believe it is programme.

Program is from the American... urm, dialect?

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 17:57

It's called Rasta mouse... care to enlighten me about the Rastafari religion, what exactly have I got wrong?

hurricanewyn · 14/02/2011 17:58

I'm going to be really boring and just answer the question.

No, YANBU to like Rastamouse. It's fab and I certainly welcome a bit of extra diversity on the TV.

However, i really don't like Reg Yates whenever he's on the TV/Radio so now I am torn. Should I dislike Rastamouse a little bit because Reggie is Rastamouse, or should I just like Reg Yates a little bit Smile

Hmmmm

Tical · 14/02/2011 17:59

Um, didn't start the thread, Posie. Do your own research. I think your posts show huge ignorance and have quite a nasty undertone, so am hiding this thread now.

Good day to you, Ma'am (or as Rastas would say: Jah Guide) Wink

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 18:11

You accused me of being wrong, quite clearly I'm not. Rastafari women are treated with an extra serving of sexism and misogyny on top of the already poorly treated Jamaican women. Obviously not all Rastafari men are like this, just the majority.

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 18:13

This has nothing to do with the race, Rastafari is a religion.

bupcakesandcunting · 14/02/2011 18:22

Well I know a real life Rasta and he is married to a White lady and likes White people. So there.

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 18:28

The basis of the religion is black supremacy, although there are modern groups that are trying to make it more multicultural. Although given that Rastas believe they are the authentic Israelites and that they will gain repatriation to Africa and black people will become rulers of the world, resulting in the suppression of whites, I do wonder why any white people become rastafari. Apparently the repatriation will mark the beginning of a new world, in which Blacks are respected. Many Rastafarians believe this is how the world would have been, but for the behaviour of corrupt whites.

gilbonzothesecretpsychoduck · 14/02/2011 18:34

I can't believe people think that watching a 10 minute programme once a day could affect children speaking 'proper' English. I'm bringing my dcs up in France, they go to a French school and speak French with a French accent but when they come home they speak English with an English accent. If they get the English wrong I correct them as that is my job as a parent. I have no issue with them shouting 'NEXT!' whenever the here the word 'doctor' (Gigglebiz) just as I have no issue with them shouting 'IREEEE!' when they finish their dinner. I'm fairly certain they won't be doing it when they're on a date in a restaurant so I can't say I'm too worried.

gilbonzothesecretpsychoduck · 14/02/2011 18:34

hear, not 'here'

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 18:52

gilbon.....if you're referring to me, which I gather you are, I object because it's a religious sect and a dialect. Why would English children speak with a French accent? Besides my children don't watch it, but as a licence payer I am wondering what the point of the language and religion within a children's TV programme.

gilbonzothesecretpsychoduck · 14/02/2011 18:59

Actually I read the thread and noticed a couple of comments about children saying things with an accent. I didn't notice who wrote these comments as I very rarely look at the names when I'm reading a whole thread. If I wanted to say something to someone directly then I would put their name in my post. My point about the French/English is that being exposed to a different accent for most of the week doesn't affect my dcs English accent so how can a 10 minute programme?

Ben10isthespawnofthedevil · 14/02/2011 19:02

I have had to look at cbeebies just to find out what you are all talking about. I am white and grew up in South London in a very mixed comprehensive school. I definitely do not have a Jamaican or Dominican accent just because I mixed with people who spoke that way as I didn't pick up an Indian accent Confused.

I absolutely love the programme and Chubbleigh you are right in comparing it to Balamory. My son is much more likely to hear a Jamaican accent in SE England than an Island Scottish accent.

TPP I can't believe that you are saying what you are saying about Rastafarians. Angry

theyoungvisiter · 14/02/2011 19:05

Posy if your children grow up in an RP household do you HONESTLY think that exposure to one programme is going to turn your little darlings into card-carrying rastas?

That's about as likely as DS2 becoming a fluent Spanish speaker after one episode of Dora the Explorer. Hmm

amberleaf · 14/02/2011 19:19

ThePosieParker

You really dont know what you are talking about, looks like you've just googled 'Rastafarianism' and cherry picked certains points.

Again Rastafarianism is not a religion it is a movement, do you understand what that means? obviously not so please just stop writing garbage about something you know nothing about.

Do you really not have anything better to bother yourself about?

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 19:21

I don't think the BBC, a state public TV station, should be showing leanings toward any religion in it's programming, let alone one with as much racism and misogyny at it's core. Jamaican mice, brilliant, Pakistani mice, super, Muslim mice, no, Rasta mice, no thanks.

It's not an accent I have an aversion to either, it's the language which when spoken without the accent sounds like you can't speak English properly. Obviously Patois requires the accent and dialect to make it complete.

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 19:22

It's a religion....amberleaf.

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 19:22

It's MN, none of us have better things to do otherwise we'd be doing it.
