I think its adorable and sweet,

was watching the wright stuff today and people from west indies background, had no objection to it. and lest we forget its a mouse! not a person

back in the day El Nombre was far more gimmicky but no one had an issue with that, I think its actually the best thing on ther atm, that is all :)

I grew up with the Clangers and I can talk reasonably well (hooo - hoo - hooo - hooo)Wink

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 16:17

No, I don't think that at all...I just really don't see the point of it. I'm wondering hwat went on in the meeting where they decided to go for a dialect and not just an accent.

Tical, get the chip off your shoulder there's a dear. You have no idea what my ethnicity is and so really have no room to judge.

bupcakesandcunting · 14/02/2011 16:17

My mother speaks in a very strong regional accent/dialect whereas DH and I are more RP. DS doesn't come home talking like his granny when he's been with her so I'm not buying it.

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 16:17

I wouldn't care if it was Mandarin, Spanish or whatever but not a close, hybrid type dialect.

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 16:18

What is the point though?

Tical · 14/02/2011 16:18

I grew up with an Irish father who's accent (well, it was technically a dialect actually Grin) was so strong none of my friends could understand him.

My degree is in English and from Oxford

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 16:19

My dcs come back from their GPs saying one like w'on'...not one like wun....

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 16:19

It's really that I just don't see the point.

Tical · 14/02/2011 16:20

Ok, Ok, I get it@Posie. Fine. Rastamouse is banned in your household, and we are not invited to your house for dinner Grin

bupcakesandcunting · 14/02/2011 16:20

What is the point? Well, the characters are rastafarians. I think it would be more odd to have them speaking perfect English in their accents. What was the programme about the Irish pigs? They used to speak in Southern irish dialect, too. I think it's nice to expose children to differences and nuances in language. It teaches them that there isn't a one size fits all when it comes to language.

Itsjustafleshwound · 14/02/2011 16:20

What is the point of ANY children's telly - if it keeps the little buggers quiet for a bit it is a 'good thing' ... I don't think there is much educational value to any TV show ...

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 16:21

No, it's not banned.....they may have it on silent or with subtitles.....Wink

Tical · 14/02/2011 16:21

The point is that it is a popular series of kiddy books that the BBC thought mightbe wuite fun to turn into a little cartoon. It's not Dostoy-fucking-evsky, 'dear'.

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 16:21

Okay I'm being unreasonable and it's not even my thread....I'll fuck off now!!

Tical · 14/02/2011 16:22

Jakers!@bucakes

That was a pile o'wank, though Grin

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 16:22

Off to subscribe to the Daily Mail.

bupcakesandcunting · 14/02/2011 16:23

I loved Jakers, it used to make me roar. Have absolutely no idea why Blush

ThePosieParker · 14/02/2011 16:46

And whilst on the subject should we really have a kids TV show of a collection of people that, as part of their religion, think of their race as superior to another?

princessparty · 14/02/2011 17:00

I agree with PosieParker, i wonder how many of us would be really thrilled to hear our little darlings talking like that.

Tical · 14/02/2011 17:00

Oh, now you are an expert on Rastafarianism, too!

Yes, DM might be worth a read for you, I feel.

amberleaf · 14/02/2011 17:06

TPP you sounds like a twat tbh...but for your information Rastafarianism is not a religion its a movement

Tical · 14/02/2011 17:11

Oh amberleaf, surely you are just being obtuse? Wink

TPP knows all about West Indians. Nah test her! Grin

amberleaf · 14/02/2011 17:13
Wink
NinjaCuckoo · 14/02/2011 17:15

My boys are mixed race and they absolutely LOVE it - certainly not offended in any way.

I should add that they are 14 and 17 Grin

thefirstMrsDeVere · 14/02/2011 17:16

OH FFS.

It isnt going to infect your children. The black doesnt rub off you know (as the old saying goes).

Patois is a dilect as distinct and valid as any other. I imagine many would think it charming if their children came out with a few French words after watching a tv show. But because this is a programme about Jamican mice it is worrying parents.

West Indian accent? What is that then?
My OH is West Indian. His family are from Guyana which is at the top of South America. Do you imagine his accent is the same as someone from St Lucia or Barbados?

I think people should really examine honestly why they dont like this programme instead of hiding behind concerns about racism or cheese being a metaphor for ganja.

Its like the 80s never happened sometimes....
