DS (9) went to play with a friend yesterday. While there the mum needed to pop to the shop and left them and younger brother (7 or 8) in the house. She would have been gone 15 mins or so I think.

We haven't left DS on his own at home yet, though are getting to the stage we feel it is appropriate. But, we would have liked to have had a chance just to remind him of all the things you do and do not do when you are alone in the house - which we hadn't done yet. Plus children are always a bit sillier if with friends.

AIBU to think the mum should have asked us first?

I do leave my 10 year old alone, and for very short periods (corner shop), he and his 7 year old brother alone.

I would not leave them alone with a friend without checking with the other parents first. I expect it will arise soon

YANBU. Even if as a parent you would leave your child alone, it is a totally different situation when you have a guest child in your house.

Thanks Jamie. It is not the leaving alone I feel is unreasonable, but like you, I would have liked her to check our stance on this.

Good grief! I check with parents if I take kids to the park in my care. Yadnbu. Kids with their friends are different to siblings by themselves behaviour wise. Very poor of mother. I would be livid.

Sorry, should have said, they kept in constant phone contact, don't know if that changes anything.

They still should have asked. No harm was done, nor was very likely to be done if they were in phone contact. They took measures to reduce risk,, but I wouldn't have done that. myself
