I swear I am going to get violent and pummel 'D'H into submission. Also where can we go on holiday?

'D' H is being an arse.

I would imagine a nice holiday first week of august, 4 people, somewhere warm, not too far away, nice, interesting, with beach would cost in the region of £2k.

AIBU?

If I could find somewhere for less that would be fabulous but bloody skinflint arsehole 'D'H thinks 2k is too expensive.

It is expensive but we never go anywhere and I have vowed this year we bloody will.

It would cost less if we went without him.

£2k is pretty cheap for August tbh.
£500 pp is not criminal Hmm, that's weekend break territory really.
Tell him if he can research and find a holiday under that, you'll happily book it Wink (he won't).

AtYourCervix · 13/02/2011 19:22

have considered camping but can't bear the thought of who we might end up in close proximity to. i can't be dealing with noise at night and other peoples squalling children. sorry.

We didn't go away last year due to the previous year's debacle, and really enjoyedvthe summer at home, spending holiday cash on theatre, days out etc.
That said, dh and I had separate breaks as did the dcs. But much cheaper than a holiday abroad.

AtYourCervix · 13/02/2011 19:24

can only take off 1 week.

need quiet

and sun

and water - beach or lake - not picky.

It's the flights that are expensive i've found. would it be cheaper finding a package or booking separately?

OP posts:
camerondiazepam · 13/02/2011 19:29

Any chance you could do Thurs-Thurs or similar, flights usually cheaper away from weekends. If you've got 2 teenagers self-catering should work well as long as everyone pulls their weight. I don't think 2k for effectively 4 adults is unreasonable by the way...

Deaddei · 13/02/2011 19:31

Most villas though are Saturday changeover.

Vicky2011 · 13/02/2011 19:31

TBH I don't think 2K for a family of 4 in August is too bad, certainly not for anywhere that would be remotely pleasant. But then I take the view that if you can't go away to a standard of living at least as good as the one that you have left then why go? For this reason we never go on holiday.

Once you're stuck to the school holidays, you could buy a reasonable used car or a new bathroom for a cost of a decent holiday. I know that sounds a bit random but every time we have the holiday conversation we come to the conclusion that there are so many other things we could do with the money.

Malificence · 13/02/2011 19:31

It really depends, we've had some cheap packages and some cheap DIY hols.
Do you mind flying longhaul for only a week? Sometimes they can work out cheaper than the med.

Is £2k your all in budget?

It is criminal, but its what it costs!

I was GOBSMACKED when I looked into how much it costs to go abroad in the summer school hols which is why we go in school time .

A week s/c in Eurocamp (mobile home) can be getting on for £1.5K not including travel, and that's not exactly luxury. A hotel abroad and flights can easily add up to £2K.

Greece is quite good for cheap(ish) holidays and completely lovely. Turkey is quite cheap as well.

I think it's August that will push your prices up. If you could do May half-term or July before the kids break up you'd save loads.

thornykate · 13/02/2011 19:47

I love the Dordogne but think with kids I would rather go somewhere that is easy to reach ie right next to an airport that has direct flights from my local airport.

I don't think £2k is much if you can afford it, considering you will be paying adult prices for the teenagers & it is an expensive time to go away.

have your holiday, life is too short & hopefully you will get some wonderful memories before your kids get to the stage when they don't want to go with you.

Asteria · 13/02/2011 19:47

How about the Ile de Re? It is very beachy and you can get everywhere necessary on foot. The teenagers could just mooch about the sand dunes and it has a lovely safe family atmosphere. You could get a really good holiday for half your budget.

activate · 13/02/2011 19:47

mediterranean coast in turkey - avoid party spots like marmaris though

it's like Greece 20 years ago and about half the cost

itssnotfunny · 13/02/2011 19:57

im on the fence - its more like 3.5k when i have looked for 4 but thats because dh insistes we look at hb or all inc as he reckons if we s/c we wont be able to afford to eat out or he will cry when given the food bill in any restaurant what with the euro being shoyte. As a result im thinking of theholdiay at home option or swinging between wells next sea/ IOW. Sad. I would love some sun.

AtYourCervix · 13/02/2011 20:01

i give up.

I've booked Icmeler in Turkey for OH and I this year 23rd August. Cost us £750 for All inclusive hotel, through Sunwings.

Eskimoo · 13/02/2011 20:18

We're off to the Costa Del Sol, 2 weeks in aug, self catering from owners direct flights from Ryanair, 4 of us under £1500....... cant wait..........

babybythesea · 13/02/2011 20:23

FWIW, I think £2 grand is expensive, but then I go ahead and spend that on a holiday every 2 years or so. But then I went and married someone from New Zealand, and he has folks who quite like seeing their grandchild, sisters who like seeing their niece etc. Which means that every few years we have to toddle across to NZ - they help us out a bit, and once there we don't have to pay much for food or accomodation, and this way we get to see everyone rather than a few of them coming here and then us not seeing the rest. So yes, I do spend that on a holiday, but it's always to the same place doing the same things and it's sort of an obligatory holiday - plus it's important for DH as he gets to show DD where he grew up, and gets to show her off to his mates etc, and I think it's important for her to learn about her dad's country. Really counts out any other holidays for us in between though - unless we win the lottery. Really should start playing that... Grin.

What I'm trying to say is that it's a lot of money but sometimes, even if you can't really afford it, there are good reasons for going ahead, saving up and splashing out. Preservation of sanity is one!

scottishmummy · 13/02/2011 20:27

maybe dh and be delighted get shot of you.given your moaning and would be reckless spending
