to wonder why there is no ban on noisy cars with those massive exhausts?

There seems to be more and more of these modified cars with huge open exhausts around where I live. I'm so glad I don't live near a main road as they are sooo loud!!! There is a teenager with a car near us who goes at all times of the day and night and you can hear him coming back home from a mile away - very annoying when the kids are asleep.

I believe that motorbikes have to have silencers these days so don't understand why deliberately noisy car exhausts are not subject to some sort of noise level restriction too?

AIBU or just a moaning old fart?!

DH said the cars need a silencer too so I suppose you could report them if it annoyed you that much Wink

LessNarkyPuffin · 12/02/2011 20:47

Some people drill a hole in the silencer (in the exhaust) to make it sound louder and more impressive. Generally boy racer types.

YANBU...my DP has a Subaru with said exhaust...it embarrasses me to death when he pulls up outside my flat...I don't want my neighbors to hate me! I hear him coming a mile away...it's unnecessary!

That's interesting Shiny - so are all these cars illegal then? I wouldn't want to go reporting them or anything - police obviously don't do much about it!!

There is a guy across the road with a Subaru, he noise is unbelievable. (he is not a young boy racer either, more like a middle aged dickhead.

He works shifts and in the cold weather would start the bloody thing at 5 in the morning and let it run to war it up.

We live in a flat, with other flats opposite, and houses at one end, with the car park in the middle, so it echoes all round.

They ought to be banned.

We have traffic lights near our house so quite often have a queue of idling traffic outside. It doesn't usually bother me but these loud cars are so annoying! It's the low bass rumbling of the engine that drives me mad.

I've done a quick google and while I can't find any exact limits, there is a decibel limit for exhaust pipes linked to a noise reduction policy (don't know if this is national or local or anything).

From the limited stuff I've managed to find it says if you want more info ask at your local police station.

beautyspot · 12/02/2011 21:37

They are a bloody pain in the neck and actually illegal however the plods don't have time to do anything about them unfortunately.

smashingtime · 12/02/2011 21:42

I completely understand the police have other things to do with their time! Just one of life's little annoyances. I feel for you shoshe - 5am is a hideous time to be woken up Shock
