to think that over use ofacronyms is the sign of a weak and lazy mind?

I have a daughter. She isn't 'dearest daughter' or even 'dd'. I have a husband. He isn't 'dearest husband' or 'dh' (he is sometimes 'twattish husband', though).

I find the use of acronyms to be a terrible barrier to communication in general and on this forum in particular.

So is it laziness on the poster's behalf? A desire to bond by using similar 'speech' patterns? Is it simply quicker? Or am I being an unreasonable old trout?

YABU IVHO. LOL.

Acanthus · 10/02/2011 09:55

DILLIGAF ?

scurryfunge · 10/02/2011 09:55

I think you may feel more comfortable on another forum Grin

AtYourCervix · 10/02/2011 09:55

don't give a shite except when the wron one is used AFAIK.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 10/02/2011 09:56

YABU - many of want to get our point across quickly as some threads move rapidly. Certain acronyms can be useful in this regards for common place sayings.
There is quite a fine line between using some shorthand and constantly using txt spk - but most posters who post here do understand the difference.
Txt speak is lazy, acronyms are efficient.

IYSWIM? Grin

Try posting from an iPhone, and you'll shorten everything!

OP: if you do not like the conventions of this forum, I wish you well in your hunt for elsewhere.

fedupofnamechanging · 10/02/2011 09:56

YABU. It is quicker. It is also one of the characteristics of this site.Maybe you just need time to get used to it. If you find that it is not for you, then you are not obliged to participate.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 10/02/2011 09:57

I should warn you though too many tickers will make your eyes bleed.

zikes · 10/02/2011 09:58

I see the 'dearest' as mostly ironic. Grin

Most parenting boards use the same acronyms, so you're out of luck.

CockularDepravity · 10/02/2011 10:00

To be clear, I'm not suggesting it be changed. I'm suggesting that it reflects poorly on those using it.

Or, of course, that I'm an unreasonable old trout.

Oh dear! Glutton for punishment aren't you?

BusyMissIzzy · 10/02/2011 10:03

Why does it matter if someone says 'my DH' rather than 'my husband'? It means the same thing, we all know what it means, and it's quicker to type. And I agree with zikes, the 'dearest/darling' is at least partly tongue-in-cheek.

scurryfunge · 10/02/2011 10:03

Why does it reflect poorly?

ShirleyKnot · 10/02/2011 10:05

And so says "cockulardepravity"

dawntigga · 10/02/2011 10:06

LOL at the way this thread is going to go.

To my mind - and I'm aware that the defenses of most posters (who use it, incidentally) are already up - it is little more than txt spk. It's lazy, it doesn't read well and it is a completely contrived way of 'talking'.

I understand that it is quicker, easily recognisable to those who have posted for a long time, and shows an element of bonding/forum togetherness. I appreciate these things.

This is why I asked if I'm being unreasonable.

Sorry, this was in reply to scurryfunge.

OP - you have evidently never met any one in the military or in education, as acronyms are a verbal/written shorthand for often long and tedious names.

TrillianAstra · 10/02/2011 10:10

YABU.

If you don't like it I suggest you go elsewhere, I'm sure there are plenty of places on the internet where everything is written out longhand.

HTH :)

Mymblesson · 10/02/2011 10:10

It's just part of Mumsnet.

I don't use them myself as I like pattern and flow of the written word too much. Each to their own, though.

CockularDepravity · 10/02/2011 10:10

addendum, after reading replies - I see. Don't challenge how we do things, eh?

How quaint. HQ?

YABU.

Oh wait, sorry: You Are Being Unreasonable.

BreconBeBuggered · 10/02/2011 10:14

I don't think conforming to the conventions of a particular board, when you remember, is indicative of anything much at all. I try not to overuse certain acronyms in case they leak onto other boards where I post more frequently.
At least here there's a guide to acronyms. Most sites I've been on have some kind of jargon specific to the user demographic, but not everywhere has a handy instruction page.
