to think that over use ofacronyms is the sign of a weak and lazy mind?

I have a daughter. She isn't 'dearest daughter' or even 'dd'. I have a husband. He isn't 'dearest husband' or 'dh' (he is sometimes 'twattish husband', though).

I find the use of acronyms to be a terrible barrier to communication in general and on this forum in particular.

So is it laziness on the poster's behalf? A desire to bond by using similar 'speech' patterns? Is it simply quicker? Or am I being an unreasonable old trout?

gobbledegoop are you the poster from way back with a similar name who was related to another poster JT?

ClaireDeLoon · 10/02/2011 10:18

Now you see I have to think very hard when typing some acronyms, like AFAIK and IYSWIM (I always find I want to add a random F to that one).

But on the whole YABU. DP much quicker than partner, for example.

gorionine · 10/02/2011 10:19

gobbledegoop · 10/02/2011 10:21

Nope, not me golden. I've always had this name and not related to anyone here afaik Wink

goldenticket · 10/02/2011 10:22

OK not to worry Smile

FabbyChic · 10/02/2011 10:24

I had no idea of what they meant when I first started posting, don't understand the need for them to be honest, they are lazy.

gorionine · 10/02/2011 10:26

I had no idea at first either. I know more about acronyms now than I did before so MN has definitly educated me!Grin

steps101 · 10/02/2011 10:29

I'm going to start using WALM as my maiden aunt-style insult from now on.

BreconBeBuggered · 10/02/2011 11:15

...anyway, I'm very fond of YABU in particular because I always imagine the poster doing an old-fashioned sticky-out-tongue gesture and shouting YAH-BOO at the offending OP.

StormInaCCup · 10/02/2011 11:48

YABU - never been told I have a 'weak mind' before, so here you go, have a delicious Biscuit

I don't care if people don't want to use the acronyms, I will still happily read their post - I just find it quicker and easier to read a post where they are used TBH!

Hassled · 10/02/2011 11:51

I've often suspected I have a weak mind. Good to have it confirmed.

OP - a lot of Mumsnetters frown upon txt spk; I suspect all our DHs/DDs/AIBUs are tame compared to some forums. This is the Queen's English by comparison.

LoveBeingADaddysGirl · 10/02/2011 11:54

Yes you are being the second; an old trout.

HeroShrew · 10/02/2011 11:54

If I didn't use acronyms I would spend even longer typing out my comments and therefore further neglect my darling children. And we can't have that, the Daily Fail might get to hear about it.
Oh...

DuelingFanjo · 10/02/2011 11:55

I couldn't wait to start using DS Blush 2 and a half years of trying for a kid and then success with IVF does that to a girl Wink

Ormirian · 10/02/2011 11:56

'weak and lazy mind'? No. Weak and lazy fingers? Probably.

Acanthus · 10/02/2011 11:56

I think the other gobble poster left, was/is she a moldie?

thumbdabwitch · 10/02/2011 11:57

What Findingstufftochuckout said - I was going to but she beat me to it.

American, are you? only it's "defences" in the UK.

CatIsSleepy · 10/02/2011 11:59

YABAUOT

(way quicker than typing you are being an unreasonable old trout)

am sure every forum has their own conventions, they are merely for convenience

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 10/02/2011 11:59

CatIsSleepy · 10/02/2011 11:59
