to think that over use ofacronyms is the sign of a weak and lazy mind?

I have a daughter. She isn't 'dearest daughter' or even 'dd'. I have a husband. He isn't 'dearest husband' or 'dh' (he is sometimes 'twattish husband', though).

I find the use of acronyms to be a terrible barrier to communication in general and on this forum in particular.

So is it laziness on the poster's behalf? A desire to bond by using similar 'speech' patterns? Is it simply quicker? Or am I being an unreasonable old trout?

So nice when new MNers go all out to insult and get as many backs up as they can. Do chog on, there's a dear Smile

I THOUGHT I had misspelled YABAUOT (thinking I should have put YABUYOT) But then I saw cats post & realised I hadn't.

I don't think you are being unreasonable for thinking that it's a little twee or irritating. I tend to agree with you on this.

But I just choose not to use them, and I'm assuming you always do the same. It doesn't really bother me that others do.

I agree 100% with you! I'm a stickler for grammar and spelling too.

TobyLerone · 10/02/2011 13:31

I think it winds me up a little because it's an Americanism which has increasingly been adopted on (mainly) UK messageboards.

But as has been said, every forum will have its acronyms, and it doesn't bother me that much. I just choose not to use DP/DS/DD myself.

thumbdabwitch · 10/02/2011 13:39

OH Jamie - I can't get the last 3 letters of yours - what's IPS? In proper speak? that can't be right...

NinthWave · 10/02/2011 13:53

TL; DR

HecateQueenOfWitches · 10/02/2011 13:55

I'm moving away from them. I started off here using them because everyone else was - baaaaaaaaa Grin

But I don't really like them, so I don't use them as often as I use 'husband', 'Himself' 'my eldest' ' my youngest' etc

But I don't care whether other people use them or not.

JamieLeeCurtis · 10/02/2011 14:30

Thambawhich - impressive!! Proper Sentences

thumbdabwitch · 10/02/2011 14:40

Thanks Jamie - I can sleep now, knowing that last word Grin

I don't mind it in general, but don't much like it when any random child is referred to as a DC.

I have heard arguments that every child is 'D' to someone.

However, if this is the case, we should extend this courtesy 'D' to all people, and the assistant in one's local shop should become DSA.

Actually, I see it as the opposite of a weak and lazy mind. The way in which I type on here shows my membership of this community. The way I type when writing a postgrad essay is another thing entirely. Similarly, emails and letters have their own registers depending upon the recipient.

It shows versatility. You can adapt and belong. You are not resistant to new things and don't struggle with it.

Text speak is only lazy when you're taking a GCSE and lolling at the discursive essay title.

It has a practical and pleasing history, internet language. I find it fascinating.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 10/02/2011 16:25

I just wish I understood some of the acronyms. Maybe I should take myself off to the instruction page and learn a few more.

I am lazy.

I don't refer to them as dh/dd1&2/ds1&2 in "real" conversation because that would just be odd. I have used their names on other forums I use but I am too new here to feel comforatble doing it.

I can see why it might irriate people as I cannot stand txt spk but such is life.
