To wish that incompetent car drivers should stick to public transport?

Having nearly been involved in an accident this morning due to the woman driver indicating one way and then turning the other, AIBU to suggest that some people should simply not be allowed to drive?

The overly timid and indecisive drivers are almost as bad as the loons who drive everywhere at 100 miles an hour. People on mobiles, applying eyeliner, smoking cigarettes, eating food ... the list of idiocy I see goes on and on.

AIBU to think that many drivers should be limited to public transport until they learn to drive adequately?

doubleese
Usually the numpties that I swear at are on a motorway with suit jacket hung up, mobile in one hand and sat nav stuck on the window.

sat in the middle lane erggggggg.

anyway to completely sweep a statement new drivers are usually driving on the crown of the road, hand at 10 to 2 and indicate at every movement. They also take a few rolls forward before going on a roundabout.
They also usually have green l plates as well

overthehillmum · 09/02/2011 23:41

The idiot that was driving along with their full beams on distracting the car in front, how stupid they didn't realise.....(whispers, it was me)Blush

ellina · 09/02/2011 23:47

I'm one of these. I can't drive, despite passing my test. I decided not to drive.

But you see the posts on here about people resenting those types who "won't drive" in a grow up sort of way.

Or the ones who really resent giving a lift to someone - even though they're going the same way anyway - I'm thinking of taking it up again.

NormanTheForeman · 09/02/2011 23:50

I'm glad there's someone else like me, Ellina. Most people just think you are too lazy to drive. They don't appreciate the two and a half years of hell that was learning to drive. I can honestly say that every single time I drove I was absolutely petrified (even after having a lesson every week for 2 years).

ellina · 09/02/2011 23:54

Yes, they seem to think you're some kind of freeloader. A car sits outside my house everyday, insured, with petrol. But my fear is such I would (and have) walked 6 miles to avoid using it, pushing a buggy.

doubleease · 10/02/2011 00:02

Ah ok meths get you now. Smile

I've just passed my test and can't wait to get out there. No green plates for me. Like a red rag to a bull that Grin.

methsdrinker · 10/02/2011 00:06

lawks my moaning was at the bone idle lazy thoughtless drivers not newbies.
Don't be put of driving by some cross witch who had a bad day (ie me)
Get out there, get some confidence and book some expert driving lessons if you need a brush up. Its just practice that gets you going
Especially as your kids get older you need to ferry them around. You will miss out on all those mad days out at a drop of a hat They so need to done aswell

methsdrinker · 10/02/2011 00:06

off not of driving bugger!!

RedHeels · 10/02/2011 00:11

How people are supposed to learn to drive if according to you, then shouldn't be allowed to drive unless they're absolutely competent Confused? Practice makes perfect and all that, I thought. Or you think they should pay 20 quid an hour to drive with their driving instructor until they have clocked a 1,000 driving hours?

Highway Code

The new Highway Code includes a revised rule 148 which now affects smokers. This reads:

148: Safe driving and riding needs concentration.

Avoid distractions when driving or riding such as:

* loud music (this may mask other sounds)
* trying to read maps
* inserting a cassette or CD or tuning a radio
* eating and drinking
* smoking

You MUST NOT smoke in public transport vehicles or in vehicles used for work purposes in certain prescribed circumstances.

Separate regulations apply to England, Wales and Scotland.
Comment

The Highway Code does not make it a specific offence to smoke while driving, any more than it is currently an offence to change a cassette, read a map or eat.

However, if any of these behaviours are coupled with bad driving, or lead to an accident, a charge of careless driving, or not being in a position to control the vehicle becomes a distinct possibility.

They can also be used to show dangerous driving, an offence which could lead to imprisonment, particularly if the dangerous driving causes a death.

A good comparison would be with using mobile telephones. Being seen to use a hand-held phone is now a specific offence (the Highway Code says 'MUST NOT'). Using a hands-free phone is not a specific offence, but provides grounds for a careless or dangerous driving prosecution in the event of erratic driving or an accident.

So, I can have a fag at the wheel as long as I drive properly at the same time (which I do). It actually takes less time to take my right hand off the wheel to have a puff than it does to take my left hand off to change bloody gear!

What annoys me?

Cyclists - you have a cycle lane provided, for your own safety and at taxpayers expense, so use it! Don't make me drive round you/avoid you/hold me up on the road, you've got your own space OVER THERE >>>>>>>>>

Grannies & Grandads doodling along, in their own good time, causing a traffic hazard & impeding other road users. Retest anyone over retirement age every 3 years. It's a known fact that reaction times slow down the older you get.

And if you can't drive on ice & snow, and aren't confident in the handling of your vehicle in those conditions, for the sake of those who can, stay at home!

dizzyblonde · 10/02/2011 05:25

As I drive professionally (an ambulance) my pet hate is people who don't pull over and STOP when I'm coming up behind with blue lights on, or those who pull out to overtake a car who has stopped without checking their mirrors. Or my favourite yesterday, the chap who stopped for me on a slip road but across both lanes so I couldn't squeeze down either side. Wouldn't have been quite so cross but I had a very poorly baby in the back and every second counted.

kissncuddle · 10/02/2011 05:46

I was run over as a young child, crossing the road to my school, by a man who was stressed and angry and rushing to get to work.

Terrifying.

I'm aghast at the aggression shown in these posts and would ask those angry posters to pull over and get themselves together if they feel like this when driving.

Angry drivers are dangerous drivers.

And as to the comments about elderly drivers, surely you drive defensively if you see an elderly driver and make the assumption their reaction time may not be the same as yours?

GotArt · 10/02/2011 05:52

I hit a woman yesterday who came to a sudden stop to let a pedestrian to cross at a non-cross walk spot. The speed limit was only 20k, so not much damage, but just to slam on the breaks at the last minute. This is why we need to implement jaywalking fines again as this happens quite often in our area apparently. They guy ended up having to walk down farther to the cross walk anyhow because traffic going the other way wouldn't stop.

GotArt · 10/02/2011 05:54

But indeed, there is too much rage on roads. Take a deep breath and keep your eyes aware.

LisasCat · 10/02/2011 07:08

Meths I'm one of those middle lane hoggers, and this is why. The traffic in the slow lane is often lorries, caravans, and other slow moving vehicles. If I'm doing about 70-80mph, to keep pulling in and out of the left hand lane every time I come up to the bumper of one of these slow vehicles is, in my opinion, more dangerous.

Changing lanes is when a lot of accidents happen. On motorways I personally think people SHOULD just pick which of the three lanes is travelling at the speed with which they're comfortable and stay there. Then everyone in the slow lane does 60-70, middle lane 70-80, fast lane men with small penises doing 90-100. Everyone's happy (except the wives of the men with small penises).

shushpenfold · 10/02/2011 07:16

May I add (after almost being hit by not one but two of the idiots on Tuesday morning).....people who don't bother to defrost their car before driving. Driving with the window down and waving frantically at the windscreen whilst heading straight for me and my car with 3 children in apparently helps a great deal. Knobs

shushpenfold · 10/02/2011 07:20

Lisascat....are you joking? It's an 'overtaking lane'....the clue's in the title. Read your highway code - it's not up to your personal beliefs as to how the roads SHOULD be arranged.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 10/02/2011 07:25

Thats the probelm on the roads, you can be as s afe as you like but you can't conrol the other pricks on the road.
My pet hate is people driving up your arse when you doing the speed limit and then zooming off to overtake the second they can. Why is everyone in such a hurry these days?

LisasCat · 10/02/2011 07:26

shush yes, but by that rule every car on the M25 should be in the left side lane, unless they need to overtake. Well clearly there are more cars on a motorway at most times than would fit in just one of the three lanes. Therefore, to only use the other 2 for overtaking doesn't work, because cars have to physically be in the other 2 lanes at all times in order to fit all the cars on the road. So you can either have every car moving between lanes constantly, thereby increasing the risk of accident, or people can pick a lane and stick with it.

Do you really think that every driver should be in the left lane, doing 90mph in the 100yd space between lorries, before pulling out, overtaking, and pulling back in for another 100yd stretch at speed? It's unworkable.

CaveMum · 10/02/2011 07:37

But Lisa would you continue to drive in the middle lane even when there is nothing in the inside lane? Hmm

SchrodingersCatFliesToOz · 10/02/2011 07:39

I am incompetent and intelligent, I do stick to public transport and my own legs. It is often quicker that way too and better for my health.
BTW, legally, it almost always the fault of the car behind no matter what the person in front did, you should always be in control of your car. May you are getting a bit complacent with your driving.

lesley33 · 10/02/2011 07:43

When I was learning to drive (passed last year) I was taught to assume that everyone else on the road are bad drivers. So just because somebody has signalled to go left at a roundabout, don't assume they are.

This is apparently standard now and is I think a good way to avoid accidents.

Methsdrinker you are right as a new driver I signal for every movement and rarely speed (and even then it is only about 2 miles above the speed limit and as soon as I realise I reduce my speed).
