I was talking to an old collegue the other day about food shopping and if hes noticed a price rise in his shopping bill.

He lives with his wife and their 3 year old son, i was shocked when he said his shopping bill is £100 a week every week! thats not including the occassional expensive week you know with washing powder or whatever.

My parents with no children (living at home) spends 150 a week-on what? seriously? dips? bloody expensive dips!

My shopping costs about 50 but often 30 a week for 2 adults and 2 children under 5. I have noticed my bill going up a bit, dont know if my son is eating more or vat rise.

do you shop weekly? whos bu, my collegue or me? where do you fit?

My shopping bill is nearer to OP's. But I buy ingredients and make things. If you are buying ready made, but buying healthily so not the cheaper stuff, then yes I can see why colleague's shopping is expensive.

KnittedBreast · 09/02/2011 12:45

i make pretty much all mine too, i hadent thought of that.

but he is an ex chef so surely he should be able to cook it all up from scratch!

Your parents are BU! I bet they shop at waitrose or M&S, don't they?

For me, DH and DD1 (2.5yo) I spend about £80 per week. That includes nappies and packed lunches but no alcohol (I'm pg). Two years ago I used to be able to do it for £75 including 3 bottles of wine.

NotAnotherNewNappy · 09/02/2011 12:46

We cook from scratch - I find it's the fruit and veg that tips us over budget.

KnittedBreast · 09/02/2011 12:47

my mum shops at tesco mainly but i have to admit i do find waitrose food in her kitchen sometimes too, their indian vegi samosas are lovely

About £75 for me, DP, DS and DD.

DP's nan and grandad spend about £130 a week on their weekly shop for just the two of them! Shock

Glitterknickaz · 09/02/2011 12:48

For five of us (2 adults, 7yr old, 5 yr old & 2 yr old) plus 2 labradors & 3 cats it's about £80 a week. That's including nappies and cleaning products.

That's with Asda.

lesley33 · 09/02/2011 12:49

OP I can understand if you are a chef, the mast thing you might feel like doing is coming home and cooking a meal from scratch.

I buy fruit and veg from market stall which is much cheaper than supermarket.

TattyDevine · 09/02/2011 12:49

I try and limit our shopping bill to £400 a month so that averages out to about £100 a week. We have 4 of us in the house, one in nappies, and that includes alcohol. We eat meat most days.

There's nothing unreasonable about it either way if you are spending money you have and are not throwing a lot of food out each week.

My shopping costs around 70.00 and I only shop for the dog and my son for meal times, I only eat cream crackers, drink coffee and use milk. I cannot afford to feed myself as we eat totally different things.

slightlymad72 · 09/02/2011 12:50

My shopping bill averages about £100 per week, thats for 3 adults 2 children, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 2 birds. I shop at 3 different stores depending on what I need.

carmenelectra · 09/02/2011 12:51

I spend £100 plus each wk and even go out during the week and get 'bits and bobs'. My bill had gradually crept up. I shop at Asda or Tesco and find I spend more at Tesco. I do also sometimes nip into M&S for treats or occasional nicer meals.

I usually cook all meals from scratch, very rarely have ready meals. There are 5 of us, DP, me and 3 children.I usually buy nappies within that shop(though not always) and my middle child is in training pant.

I might add that I also buy alcohol(most important bit)which will be two or three bottles of wine, sometimes, beer, sometimes spirits.

Neither of you are being unreasonable, spend what you like.

I wouldn't like to be spending only £50 a week, but if that's all you can afford or if you'd rather spend your money on other things then that's your choice. The same way it's your colleague's choice to spend his money on nicer food.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 09/02/2011 12:51

Me DH and 4 DC's if I plan my menu well and shop carefully I can do it for around £80 a week.

lesley33 · 09/02/2011 12:51

In terms of your parents, my parents must spend a fortune in the supermarket. They do cook from scratch, but also buy lots of ready made treats. For example, they swore by ready made welsh rarebit - cheese on toast, which was expensive!

But then my mum can't get out the house much because of ill health, so I think nice meals become disproportionately important.

MorticiaAddams · 09/02/2011 12:52

We spend about £100 per week for four on the main shop not only food and then goodness knows how much during the week as fruit seems to magically disappear.

I have no idea how much my parents spend!

cantspel · 09/02/2011 12:52

If he is a chef he might buy expensive extras to make fancy dishes just cos he knows how and likes to cook. Maybe he buys the better cuts of meat and out of season veg.

TrillianAstra · 09/02/2011 12:52

Reality I would love to try to spend £250/week, but I don't think I would manage it. :o

lesley33 · 09/02/2011 12:53

Its perfectly possible to eat really well on £50 per week if you make things from scratch. I admit I don't like steak or cream which I guess saves money.

But I do make casseroles, soups, curries, etc all of which are very cheap to make.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 09/02/2011 12:54

I couldn't tell you what we (DH, DD and I) spend a week.
I've got into the habit of shopping every day on the way home from dropping DD at school.
I think on average, I spend 20 euros a day including wine and fags.
I don't throw food away, I use it for something else. Currently pea soup is cooking because I had a load of boiled bacon left over from the weekend.
Actually, that's not true, I did chuck about half a kilo of sprouts away on Monday.

KnittedBreast · 09/02/2011 12:54

fabbychic are you ok? you need to eat yourself too, if you collapse whol look after your child and your home? cream crackers are not enough to get by on, youl collapse from exhaustion. trust me ive been there i used to do what you are doing now. Is till cant put any weight one :(

I just dont know what my parents spend it on, i suppose my mum just dousnt look at prices.

250 a week is a joke, she must have shopped at harrods.

my collegue was a chef a long time ago, he works in hr now (oddly).

lesley33 · 09/02/2011 12:54

Also as my OH doesn't drink, I rarely drink in the house unless we have friends over. I'm sure that makes a difference to our shopping bill.

NotAnotherNewNappy · 09/02/2011 12:55

Ah ha, we have 2 cats - it must be their fault! Bloody Iams costs a fortune.

I mostly order everything online from Tesco so that we can earn points and spend them on restaurant vouchers.

Sometimes I get an M&S ready meal instead of a takeaway. I wish we lived nearer ASDA, their curries are the bomb.
