I was talking to an old collegue the other day about food shopping and if hes noticed a price rise in his shopping bill.

He lives with his wife and their 3 year old son, i was shocked when he said his shopping bill is £100 a week every week! thats not including the occassional expensive week you know with washing powder or whatever.

My parents with no children (living at home) spends 150 a week-on what? seriously? dips? bloody expensive dips!

My shopping costs about 50 but often 30 a week for 2 adults and 2 children under 5. I have noticed my bill going up a bit, dont know if my son is eating more or vat rise.

do you shop weekly? whos bu, my collegue or me? where do you fit?

At the moment there is just me and my husband. i shop at asda and i spend on average £60 - 80 per week. like you said, £80 when it's a washing powder or kitty litter week!

if im baking or something i tend to splurge a bit more on ingredients, but yes the weekly shop is all stuff for me to make...no ready meals!

FabbyChic · 09/02/2011 12:56

I eat crackers, and crispbreads! Im dieting too, I drink coffee like it's going out of fashion!

We don't eat the same meals and I cannot afford to buy two sets of dinners.

I don't waste a penny either!

Mine and DP's only about £30 a week but we are seriously skint at moment/economising and it's only the two of us..it rises drastically when his son stays! We don't drink.

lololizzy · 09/02/2011 13:00

and i'm often dieting so will frequently live off yoghurt/crispbread/bananas etc so it's cheap (and is often deliberately to keep costs as well as weight down)

TrillianAstra · 09/02/2011 13:02

"I eat crackers, and crispbreads! Im dieting too, I drink coffee like it's going out of fashion!"

I don't know why you sound proud of starving yourself, you are being very irresponsible.

SnowieBear · 09/02/2011 13:03

Around £80 on a good week, closer to £100 on a bad one for DH, DS and I. That includes non-edibles like cleaning products, toothpaste, etc.

It has really jumped since just before Xmas, it used to be more like £70 on a heavy shop. Getting concerned, because we do shop around to get the best prices and cook from scratch most meals. Mind you, the boys could eat for England and all ingredients are good quality and fresh...

NotAnotherNewNappy · 09/02/2011 13:06

Fabbychic You must know you sound crackers? You don't have to buy two sets of meals to diet, you just cook the same meals but leave the fun/expensive bits out for yourself. E.g. pasta with meat and cheese for him but just tomato sauce for you?

FabbyChic · 09/02/2011 13:06

I dont like what he eats! Ive done it like this for years, always just had a sandwich rather than dinner!

Danthe4th · 09/02/2011 13:08

I seem to do 2 big shops a month of £150 and then top up with £30 every few days.
Which is probably £600 plus a month.
I'm coeliac so that adds a bit on for gluten free bits, but mostly I cook from scratch for 4 children and DH.
The thing I find most difficult is getting a meal ready for everyone at the same time or at least something that can be reheated without having to cook 3 times.
I've got 2 teenage girls who do after school sports and ballet and 2 younger boys doing cubs, beavers, football etc.
Its the snacky bits that seem to add up and all the fruit we get through.
I added a leg of lamb to the order the other day and nearly had a fit it was £13, last night I made chicken burgers and the chicken breasts alone were £7 to feed 6.
I use at least 24 eggs a week at £6, I make soup etc but I couldn't get down to £50 a week.

LisamumtoJake · 09/02/2011 13:08

Ours is £80 odd per week, for me, DH,DS and dog. We shop at morrisons, we find the dearer items are dog food , and meat which we do eat alot of and fruit n veg oo and nappies!!

Average £100 per week, which includes all food for dh, ds and me, all cleaning products, loo rool, kitchen paper, dishwasher tablets and enough for dh to take packed lunch in to work every day, also enough coffee to take in to work so he doesn't spend silly money in costacofeecostsalot

If I've worked it out correctly that's £4. 70 ish per day, per person - so imo not too bad.

I could get it down a lot if I seriously had to budget.

TotemPole · 09/02/2011 13:12

David Haye, the boxer, claims to spend £1000 a week on food.Shock

KnittedBreast · 09/02/2011 13:12

lolilizzy, i used to be the same because i was eating hardly anything i used to get my energy from fizzy drinks. but this gives you sugar highs (you probebly wont be able to feel them anymore, you might feel a bit better after you first coffee of the morning though). coffee also dehydrates you giving you periods of the day when you just need to sleep.

dieting like that will put your body in starvation mode and nay calories will be kept, you may even put on weight. its not the best way to do it. ive gone hungry many times so dp and my children can eat, i never eat brekfast and have just started forcing myself to have lunch as after a while you just dont need food and dont get hungry.

altikum, im really sorry it costs you so much. my friends son has loads of allergies and he tells me its anightmare with food, his son cant eat anyhting as most ready made food contains what he cant have, even pasta sauces and stock cubes or gravy granules. its very convenient how to allery/organic section can charge like 8 for milk.

We dont drink either, i think that helps the food bill stay down!

anything from £50 to £100 for three of us (ds is 7/52 so hardly counts!)

But i don't think it is unreasonable to spend extortionate amounts of money - i think my parents weekly bill must be huge but so what? they can afford it, don't throw away food and have no need to scrimp on the good things in life :)

duchesse · 09/02/2011 13:13

Ours is about £120-130/week for everything that comes from the supermarket, delivery service and butchers for me. DH, the aupair, three teenagers and a baby. (ie 7 of us) DS (17) alone gets through about £15 worth of ham and cheese a week!!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 09/02/2011 13:13

trying to do it for under £40 atm, because we're having a horrifying little cash blip Blush that's for all food, household and toiletries.

It's ok. I get creative Grin

And it is helped by the fact that the children do get gluten free foods on prescription, so they have that as well.

onadifferentplanettoday · 09/02/2011 13:15

I spend around £65 thats just for me and 2 teenage ds who both eat more than I do. I have started to spread my shop from once a week to about every ten days and tend to alternate between Tesco and Waitrose. For health reasons I have to shop online and find little difference in the cost between the two though that may be because Waitrose delivery is free. The only thing I get on a daily basis is fresh milk. I make most things from scratch and bake my own cakes biscuits etc. That amount includes toietries ,washing powder etc.

valiumredhead · 09/02/2011 13:16

duchesse I have stopped buying packaged ham and started cooking a ham (gammon?) in the slow cooker - lasts ages and only about £6 from Tescos and I use the stock for soups. I was slightly horrified at how much we were paying for sliced stuff when a joint was so much cheaper.

laosvher · 09/02/2011 13:16

We spend about £90-150 a week.
That's me, DH, DD1 and DD2.
Then there's a big bag of dog food (about £30) once every few weeks.
The £90 is what mysupermarket tells me our shop will cost at Asda, the £150 is at Ocado.
On average it's about 120.

BunnyWunny · 09/02/2011 13:21

I would like to see exactly what yo buy and make with it to feed a family of 4 on £30!

I know I never buy really cheap stuff and know I could cut my shopping down but £30?

Francagoestohollywood · 09/02/2011 13:22

There is nothing unreasonable both with you or your colleague.
I spend on average 100 euros a week. Sometimes more if we have people round for dinner or if I buy meat from the butcher instead of the supermarket or if I buy too much focaccia from the bakery. I find that prices are going up (Italy here)

SnowieBear · 09/02/2011 13:22

valiumredhead, I used to cook gammon joints all the time and now only seem to do it at Christmas. I think you've just given me the right push up the backside to start doing it again, thank you!
