To Think This Is Vile and Abusive?

There's a debate on smacking on another forum I use and one of the posters has said, amongst other things, her parents used to put mustard on her tongue as a child as a punishment.

Am I over reacting in thinking this is on a par with washing a child's mouth out with soap and actually abusive?

That video makes me sick!!! That poor little boy. I'd have thought she knew more than most where she could turn to for help if she felt she wasn't coping, since she's been through the adoption process.

I read in another report about her that the boy still lives there after she's been charged with cruelty. One of the other things this woman did was to make this little boy perform star jumps until he was exhausted. Sad Sad Sad

I can't begin to explain how awful I feel after watching that. Sad

portoloo - the problem is, she doesn't look like she thinks she isn't coping. She looks perfectly in control, carrying out punishments that she has carried out many times before and the little boy new exactly what she was going to do. They don't strike me as the actions of a desperate mother at the end of her tether. She knows exactly what she is doing and her words are calculated to make the boy feel terrified.

That is one of the most disturbing things I have ever watched.
When he started crying in the shower I had to stop it.

how can anyone bare to hear those cries and carry on??

I have just hugged my DC and told them I love them. Which resulted in 'Muuuummm I'm trying to watch the telly' Smile

How can they leave that poor boy with her or indeed any of the kids? I just want to know he is going to be ok but how can he be with such a vile abusive mother? I will be watching this case and hope she gets punished

When he started crying/screaming with pain under that icy show (and in Alaska it wouldn't be much above freezing )I could hardly bear to watch. And all the time she was yelling questions at him and demanding an answer.
But the scariest thing was I don't think she thought that there was anything wrong with it.

depends where you are. I have friend from overseas and what she tells me about her upbringing makes me want to cry. But hey ho, she's OK and competant and she wouldn't do it to her kid.

My dh is from a place where it's very happy slappy with kids - I loathe it (because I've seen it) but the kids actually grow up OK.

I've never laid a finger on my kid. My dps never laid a finger on me or verbally abused me. My dh (who had a childhood routine of being routinely hit with belt) would never lay a finger on our child. But I do feel that dh has been affected by his experiences to this day.

You can't really compare the past to the present. Things like that were totally acceptable then...like hitting children with sticks (the cane) at school.

Thankfully the world has evolved.

I saw this comment and just wanted to say that at work today I was talking to three girls. They are from Gambia, Afghanistan and Oman. They have all moved to this country in the last 18 months. They were telling me that it is completely fine to hit a child's hands until they bleed - with a leather strap (Gambia), a sharp ruler (Oman) and a thin cane (Afghanistan). If they are late for school. Yep. Late for school. Or, in Gambia, if their hair is not braided properly. If you are really naughty in Oman, you apparently will have your shoes and socks removed and the soles of your feet beaten.

They went on to tell me that this was all fine because you learn 'really, really quickly' and 'you are never ever late'.

So maybe some parts of the world have moved on Mutznutz.....

Sad Sad Sad Sad

Bloody hell, the shower bit made me cry. :(

What a freak.

That video is horrific.

As the woman has been named and shamed, let's hope she's had the shit kicked out her a few times since.
