Chef/model/whatever

AIBU to think that you now need to be a model to cook on TV (Sophie, Gizzy, that baking woman) or at least a suggestive spoon licker. Whereas if you're a man you can look like Gary Rhodes.

As this was the final bastion and normal looking women are henceforth banished from our screens (presumably because it hurts one's eyes to look upon them) AIBU to think the BBC won't miss my licence fee because I'm clearly fucking invisible

It's not just cheffing...

...

It's the beauty qualification and it's a load of old arse.

SecondMrsS · 07/02/2011 17:18

That's why the whole Andy Gray thing was so obsurd.

They tried to make out that such sexism was abhorrent to them but they continue to employ fat middle aged men and stunning young women... bleughhhhhhh to the lot of them.

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 07/02/2011 17:19

If only the Michelin starred females would have a little nip/tuck and slap some lipstick on..
At least then I could actually bake something that wasn't sexy/lo-cal

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 07/02/2011 17:20

Oh and if they could pop on a nice little evening dress or a low cut top and tight skirt..

onimolap · 07/02/2011 17:21

When Gary Rhodes started out, he was the young, attractive punk-ey one.

What's different about him is that he carried on. Unlike Delia, or the Grigsons, or any of the other females who could actually cook.

Did this co-incide with the change from instructive cookery programmes, to life-style food ones?

TheCrackFox · 07/02/2011 17:22

YANBU

Baking lady is very pretty but makes bog standard cakes.

Sophia Dahl's programme was laughably bad.

Why has Angela Hatnett not got her own prime time programme on the BBC? Is it because she won't be on the cover of Vogue?

Sexist Wank.

"Oh and if they could pop on a nice little evening dress or a low cut top and tight skirt.."

Thought that was Children in Need night only....

TheCrackFox · 07/02/2011 17:22

Gary Rhodes can only be about 5ft 5.

onimolap · 07/02/2011 17:23

And could we have Pippa Greenwood back on the gardening shows?

Unrulysun · 07/02/2011 17:27

Oh Pippa Greenwood. I love her on the radio.

I really object to baking lady. She is so fucking beautiful that it's actually quite insulting iyswim. Although at least she is a person of colour so I suppose that's another stereotype challenged at least.

When did it become acceptable to only employ models for everything?

I'm actually quite cross Angry

Monica from Professional Masterchef was brilliant, a top chef and interestingly attractive too. Let's see more of her & her choppy crop.

At least the Lorraine Pascale is a person of colour so breaking some of the presenter 'norm' there. And she can cook!

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 07/02/2011 17:34

the Two Fat Ladies were hardly models & they did well for a while.

Unrulysun · 07/02/2011 17:36

How long ago were two fat ladies? And the name's not massively empowering is it?

OP posts:
TheCrackFox · 07/02/2011 17:36

The Two Fat Lady's were on TV over 10 yrs ago.

Nowadays, non-attractive women are not on prime time TV.

The BBC need to ask themselves why they expect all women to pay for a TV license.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/02/2011 17:38

Love Angela Hartnet. Wasn't she on whatever the morning show on ITV is?

Loved the Two Fat Ladies too, they were an absolute riot. Grin

I quite like the lady who's been doing 'Country Cottage' or 'River Cottage', making jams, pickles, etc.

prettyfly1 · 07/02/2011 17:39

Its quite simple. Turn off the tv and complain in your droves. They wont push shows that dont rate or cause controversy.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/02/2011 17:41

Oh and Rusty Lee... she makes me laugh so much!

prettyfly1 · 07/02/2011 17:42

I love rusty lee and I love, love, loved the two fat ladies :)

Unrulysun · 07/02/2011 17:43

Prettyfly yes that's clearly the case but I assume that they are responding to public opinion anyway so is it really the case that as a viewing public we can only look at beautiful women? This is not an issue for men onscreen
