to be very surprised and quite pleased at DD's revulsion when faced with her first 'Happy Meal"?

we were late leaving PIL's house yesterday after FIl's birthday party, it's a long journey and the DC (3.2 and 20 months) were starving. So, we ended up having to stop by the motorway at a Burger King for dinner.

I try to avoid feeding them crap (but am also not a handwoven organic lentil burger monger) but TBH I though they'd love it.

So, we got two childrens' meals for the DC and something for ourselves and sat down to eat. DC looked thrilled at the novelty.

After happily munching away at the chips for a bit DD had a bite of her burger whist DS studiously ignored his chicken nuggets after a having a little nibble. She chewed a bit and then wretched, I thought she'd swallowed it but a couple of minutes later she asked to spit it out. Poor little sausage really couldn't eat it, said it was revolting.

Now, she's 3, so she can pull some tricks when faced with new foods. The rule is that she has to try new stuff but doesn't have to eat more than a 'try'. But, this was definitely a genuine reaction and one she's never has to anything before, I was really quite surprised.

A couple of minutes I may (rather evilly) have said 'Mmm, DD, this is Macdonalds, it's not very nice, is it?'.

So, AIBU to be pleased at how revolting she found it. I obviously didn't make a big thing of it, just took the offending object away and said that everyone has things they really don't like and it doesn't matter.

Asteria - when you're out in the high street - its sometimes easier to grab something on the go than getting out the camping stove and whipping up something homemade. That is all.

And don't use the term Nazi out of context.

Asteria · 07/02/2011 11:53

Having said that - I have never felt the need to share this information before now - and I'm a little bit Blush that I just did...

Surely you have something far more worthwhile in your life that we can dissect/criticise/flame you for?

BuzzLightBeer · 07/02/2011 11:56

because we aren't smug fuckers with a chip on our shoulders?

I can't bear food smugness, makes you look like a total tool.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/02/2011 11:57

Flame-grilled, surely?

HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 11:57

Gah, sorry Orm, I refuse to do the AIBU OP defensive thing

Falsemessage - am yet to whip out a camping stove on the high street - we spend very little time there anyway. I live in a really remote area and taking my DS to MacD's (about 15 miles away) would be more inconvenient than nipping into our local butcher and getting one of his homemade sausage rolls.
I'm sure that if I lived in a less rural area and was the sort of person who spent my days cruising the high street, then I would be more inclined. Actually no - I really wouldn't...

Suchffun · 07/02/2011 12:08

You do sound smug but you have said that yourself. You sound happily smug which is nice really in a funny way.

I am craving junk food now though...

HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 12:11

yy happily and lightheartedly smug. If I actually thought there was anything wrong with an occasion fast food meal, I would have set up my camping stove beside the motorway and cooked up some quinoa with organic goat steaks.

I've never eaten a McDonalds and cannot understand why folk pay such high prices for very small portions of not very nice food.

YABU for going in the first place Grin

''I don't even think the OP was that smug''

No, just bleedin' boring.

FerociousBeast · 07/02/2011 12:23

yes, thats what i thought it was just boring.

I don't think that people choose it over homemade per se. I just think that most of us aren't so regimented that if fast food is the easy and convenient option when out and about, we won't cut our noses off.

DS had a Chinese take-out last week as he wanted to try Chinese food after learning about Chinese new year at pre-school. We had veggie chow mein, vegetables and cashew nuts, spare ribs and rice. Pretty healthy I reckon. As it turned out ge wasn't keen and wanted my homemade pasta from the night before I don't see the point in setting your kids up for a life where fast food is totally off-limits. There will be times you will be grateful for such delicacies like for instance when the builders gutting your kitchen take until 8pm to bugger off and you cannot get in there to cook
