to be very surprised and quite pleased at DD's revulsion when faced with her first 'Happy Meal"?

we were late leaving PIL's house yesterday after FIl's birthday party, it's a long journey and the DC (3.2 and 20 months) were starving. So, we ended up having to stop by the motorway at a Burger King for dinner.

I try to avoid feeding them crap (but am also not a handwoven organic lentil burger monger) but TBH I though they'd love it.

So, we got two childrens' meals for the DC and something for ourselves and sat down to eat. DC looked thrilled at the novelty.

After happily munching away at the chips for a bit DD had a bite of her burger whist DS studiously ignored his chicken nuggets after a having a little nibble. She chewed a bit and then wretched, I thought she'd swallowed it but a couple of minutes later she asked to spit it out. Poor little sausage really couldn't eat it, said it was revolting.

Now, she's 3, so she can pull some tricks when faced with new foods. The rule is that she has to try new stuff but doesn't have to eat more than a 'try'. But, this was definitely a genuine reaction and one she's never has to anything before, I was really quite surprised.

A couple of minutes I may (rather evilly) have said 'Mmm, DD, this is Macdonalds, it's not very nice, is it?'.

So, AIBU to be pleased at how revolting she found it. I obviously didn't make a big thing of it, just took the offending object away and said that everyone has things they really don't like and it doesn't matter.

yes Mutz - DS2 eats anything (apart from pepperoni and red onion, and curry) - also has done - he's a human vacuum cleaner Grin

(DS1 and 3 change their tastes are as changeable as the British Weather)

HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 10:23

No, she said 'walgelijk' but it translates as revolting.

I think it's great that your daughter didn't like her first experience of fast food, and hope that this is an indicator of her future tastes, too! I know that when I was a kid, although I liked junk food, I wasn't allowed it very often, so didn't develop much of a taste for it, and that's served me well in adulthood.

I'd be feeling happy too if I were in your position!

HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 10:25

DD also human vacume cleaner, she eats pretty much anything.

My DD hates Burger King. She hates McDonald's burgers. However give her a McDonalds chicken nugget meal and she loves it. I'm sure your DD will discover McD's for herself soon enough and love it.

There is nothing wrong with McDonalds as long as you're not in there every week. I've got no problem with taking DD in there every now and then.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 07/02/2011 10:26

I am happy to admit that my DDs first taste of McDonalds set her up for a life of loving burgers. She won't consider a home made one and will just about tolerate Q burgers, she does adore cheeseburgers.
OP, you are being very smug and U.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/02/2011 10:26

ahh - your DD is still young - I have a 7 1/2yr old human vacuum.

DS1 used to like anything and everything too.............he started getting picky at around 3yrs old..............he's 10 now - and lets not even go there Hmm

HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 10:28

Now, you see my parents were hardline hippies. I was 16 before I ate my first fast food. I spent my childhood lusting after other childrens darylee triangles, crisp sandwiches, fizzy drinks, all that crap.

It's done me no good at all, I ate tonnes of crap the first few years after I left home. Which is why I let the DC eat everything in moderation.

mutznutz · 07/02/2011 10:33

I have 3 human hoovers at home...4 if you count the dog.

I've given up taking the shopping in when Tesco delivers it...it's so much easier to send the kids out and let them eat their way through the van.

mutznutz · 07/02/2011 10:34

...Not that the dog's a human hoover Blush

notskiving · 07/02/2011 10:37

ha ha!
my ds until age 8 would eat no bread, or cheese, hated fatty food, and was virtually a fructarian (his choice - other dc ate everything)
Now at age 13 he has for several years been a 'normal' eater - but he now hates mash and boiled potatoes, loves chips and roasties.

Tryharder · 07/02/2011 10:37

YANBU, OP. It's good that your DD didn't like the junk. My kids aren't bothered by it either and never finish the Happy Meal - they just like the toy...

That doesn't mean they don't eat sweets or other kinds of junk food before anyone says I;m being smug. I think it's what you get used to. I personally hate McDonalds so have only taken my kids there when they've been with friends who have wanted to go.

CilantroLarry · 07/02/2011 10:39

It's retched, not wretched.

Ordinarily, I wouldn't do that. But I can be smug on a smug thread can't I? And my smuggery is limited to pedantry.

Pigglesworth · 07/02/2011 10:39

HettyAmaretti, yes, I think it's a matter of striking a balance between not making junk food this idealised, "banned", emotionally significant thing, and not making junk food an integral part of daily eating, either. Sounds like you're doing a good job! :)

bupcakesandcunting · 07/02/2011 10:40

My DS hates BK. He loves McD's though so hold your smuggery until she's had her first bite of a maccy's death burger.

Turning your nose up at a dry burger doesn't mean she is inherently geared to prefer haute cuisine over crap. Sorry!

HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 10:40

CilantroLarry Grin

It was a wretched retch.

OP posts:
megapixels · 07/02/2011 10:41

LOL you sound rather silly. Who knows what bad things she'd NOT be repulsed by in the years ahead?! Not heroin hopefully

mutznutz · 07/02/2011 10:42

But her child does like junk. The OP said they tucked in to their chips and that she usually loves burgers.

That's why this thread is a bit of a non starter. I used to have to sit for ages encouraging my kids to not just stuff themselves with the chips...but to eat the burger/nuggets first. In fact, they weren't allowed to open the toy until they'd finished.

CilantroLarry · 07/02/2011 10:42

I know a recovering heroin addict who doesn't like fast food.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 07/02/2011 10:47

KFC, that is the only sort of fast food DD won't eat. Not a problem as it doesn't seem to exist in Belgium.

Hullygully · 07/02/2011 10:48

I hope she learns the violin, does kumon maths and speaks Mandarin?

If not, I'm afraid you can't have your Smuggy badge just yet.

HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 10:49

yes, she does love some pretty junky stuff, leverworst (liver sasauge?) , chips, sausage rolls, cheese spread, ice cream...

Just didn't like what I assumed to be the holy grail for all children, the fast food joint burger. Unfortunately I didn't know that there is actually quite a difference between BK and mcdonalds and the BK seems universally acknowledged as having revolting burgers.

OP posts:
MrsPennySworth · 07/02/2011 10:51

Oh for heavens sake! Biscuit

HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 10:51

No violin, no Mandarin, no ballet

No, Kreecher, I've never seen KFC in here or in Belgium. Might just have missed it though.

OP posts:
HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 10:52

Also no kumon maths, before you think she does (WTF is that?).
