to be very surprised and quite pleased at DD's revulsion when faced with her first 'Happy Meal"?

we were late leaving PIL's house yesterday after FIl's birthday party, it's a long journey and the DC (3.2 and 20 months) were starving. So, we ended up having to stop by the motorway at a Burger King for dinner.

I try to avoid feeding them crap (but am also not a handwoven organic lentil burger monger) but TBH I though they'd love it.

So, we got two childrens' meals for the DC and something for ourselves and sat down to eat. DC looked thrilled at the novelty.

After happily munching away at the chips for a bit DD had a bite of her burger whist DS studiously ignored his chicken nuggets after a having a little nibble. She chewed a bit and then wretched, I thought she'd swallowed it but a couple of minutes later she asked to spit it out. Poor little sausage really couldn't eat it, said it was revolting.

Now, she's 3, so she can pull some tricks when faced with new foods. The rule is that she has to try new stuff but doesn't have to eat more than a 'try'. But, this was definitely a genuine reaction and one she's never has to anything before, I was really quite surprised.

A couple of minutes I may (rather evilly) have said 'Mmm, DD, this is Macdonalds, it's not very nice, is it?'.

So, AIBU to be pleased at how revolting she found it. I obviously didn't make a big thing of it, just took the offending object away and said that everyone has things they really don't like and it doesn't matter.

DS1 does violin

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 07/02/2011 10:54

Oh I would have been delighted too. DD only really liked "Old MacDonalds" for the toys Hmm

I get the same thrill as DD's preferred chose of drink (if we buy in a shop) is bottled water. Never fails to give me a huge smile every time she asks for "bottled water"!

HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 10:55

Oh, this is rather fun. YOu know I fear I may have to retire from the thread before I start making things up for the fun of it Wink

Oh, and the toys were shit and far too old for DC.

I play a purple violin.

Seona1973 · 07/02/2011 10:56

neither of mine like burgers (of any sort) but do like the Nugget meals at Mcdonalds. Have never taken them to Burger King cos I dont like their burgers. I am partial to the Mcdonald chicken legend with salsa.

Onetoomanycornettos · 07/02/2011 10:56

See, if you'd offered her the chicken nuggets or fish fingers, she would have yummed them up. Good try, won't last.

HettyAmaretti · 07/02/2011 10:57

yy she likes fish fingers. DP ordered, that would have been better.

Oooh now see my 11yr old plays the violin and last year he played with the London Symphony Orchestra (seriously) Grin

During the all day rehearsal...they were treated to KFC by the conductor.

I don't quite know what to make of it all now Confused Wink

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/02/2011 11:05

I was thrilled when DD loved chips and chicken selects as she has allergies and is fussy so doesn't eat much

bupcakesandcunting · 07/02/2011 11:09

findingstuff you have no right being smug about your DC choosing bottled water! Do you know how much damage bottled water does to the environment? Get thee to a tap with a metal drinks bottle!

Hullygully · 07/02/2011 11:10

Mine don't eat or drink at all to be on the safe side.

mutznutz · 07/02/2011 11:12

Hully I just spat my coffee out then lmao!!

DS1 hates McDonald's the little freak.

Which is a PITA because I quite like it but restrict it to long road trips. So he sits there with his little packet of fries and bottle of water and batches about the smell of our delicious burgers.

I have no idea where he got this idea, it certainly wasn't my doing and he will eat other burgers and fries but just hates Maccas.

Weird kid.

BunnyWunny · 07/02/2011 11:23

Hold back on the smuggery duggery because she will change her mind GUARANTEED!!!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 07/02/2011 11:25

Agree with bunny, she'll be the one rolling in at 2am with a kebab and extra chilli sauce.

MrsGravy · 07/02/2011 11:32

I hate to point this out OP but my kids hated McDonalds/Burger King et al when they were that age. Now they are 6 and 4 they love going there, although that has more to do with the free toys than the food I reckon.

There really isn't a lot of peer pressure at the ages of 3 and 20 months so no particular reason why they would like it!

I have to say I'm glad the kids like the odd McD's. Ours has a soft play area and free wi-fi so I take them there in the school hols, timed for when the baby has a nap and have a nice little break, a big fat burger and a relaxing mumsnet.

mrsruffallo · 07/02/2011 11:33

I don't like McDonald's food, can I be smug?

I prefer KFC

a happy meal once every couple of months won't hurt

falsemessageoflethargy · 07/02/2011 11:35

Mine too used to hate MCds - indeed I rememeber a US holiday when it was literally the only eating option and we were bribing ds to eat a burger and chips with the carrot sticks - he was 3/4.

Now he's 7 its all changed...

swanandduck · 07/02/2011 11:44

What a beyond smug post.

swanandduck · 07/02/2011 11:45

The OP, not you falsemessage.

falsemessageoflethargy · 07/02/2011 11:50

Grin and there was I all ready to do my Les Dawson pushing up of cleavage and hurrumphing there swanandduck.

Asteria · 07/02/2011 11:50

My DS is 8 and has never eaten Maccy D's or BK's Happy meals - he went to a party at one a few years ago and insisted on a fruit bag. Admittedly I spent years brainwashing persuading him that the big fast food chains were the work of the devil! We will go to our lovely local fish and chip shop occasionally - so I'm not a fast food Nazi - but I just don't understand how people can go for processed muck over something homemade...

Ormirian · 07/02/2011 11:52

OOh how lovely! A little girl as perfect as her Mama Hmm

Make the most of it.
